People are kicking off because Shadowstrike remains and isn’t being replaced by Ambush, but it’s essentially the same ability? Strike from stealth? The same applies to Rupture and Nightblade. They’re the same abilities, just different spell icons. Also the sound of Shadowstrike? It just sounds like a blade… Ambush sounds like someone kicked down a sand castle.
I personally don’t mind Shadowstrike, but wouldn’t care if it was replaced by Ambush either so long as you can still teleport from a distance. I think thay feature of it alone is the best part. Can someone please explain what I am missing?
Well I loved the old sub. I also mained s SHADOW priest in TBC, wrath and first part of cata. I think the heavy shadow theme should be returned to the shadow priest where it belongs - death to voidform!!!
big reason is probably that it came at the same time as the spec revamp. to me the new abilities, animations and sounds are linked to it, even if some of them are essentially reskins of the old abilities and either ability would work for either iteration of the spec (like nightblade and rupture).
the shadow theme is okay, but i can’t deny that the old abilities bring good feelings that the new ones don’t. i’m not sure how much of that is based on actual merit and how much of it is me mentally associating them with a class design that i preferred.
the sound and animations of backstab and ambush are really special for me though. the new backstab is not satisfying. it has basically no sound and a very bland animation. shadowstrike is fine, but ambush and backstab’s sound and animation was amazing. hemo was also very satisfying, both animation and sound wise.
then we also got the fact that in rogue 1v1’s you afaik can cloak nightblade for a easy restealth, but cus rupture is a bleed u cant cloak it, or did they change this.
however in SL with everyone getting poisons I doubt this will make much of a difference
The old backstab and ambush sounds were a good combination with the fact that the abilities actually also did real damage. It felt impactful.
The new backstab sounds bland, and the damage is horrible as well.
It just feels and sounds like a blunt knife hitting a stone wall.
It doesn’t feel or sound very impactful at all.
I don’t hate the shadow theme. I hate the fact that the abilities aren’t impactful/ distinct in terms of sound (and damage in most cases).
Same goes for old mutilate and hemorrhage etc. They sounded like you really created a big wound in the target. I don’t get why they changed it at all. It felt so good using the abilities.
Even the old envenom sounded more distinct.
All the new abilities sound so similar to each other, and none is really distinct.
Everything sounds pretty much"swish" and “swosh”, for all three specs.
It feels and sounds worse than before they changed it all.
Because the Shadow Aesthetic came with the gutting of the entire Specc… therefore Players want it gone. and certain parts of that aesthetic being maintained likely causes a Doubt in players Minds that they’ll see this entirely be undone.
remmeber, BFA ALpha and beta has left a Sour taste in most players mouths… and will cause distrust on multiple levels going through the beta.
Not having a bleed in pvp is a huge loss. Coupled with the fact that lets face it, the change was so terrible they had to make nightblade what? A dot, a damage modifier and a slow (didn’t it also have wound on it too at some point?).
Lol, I personally dont hate the shadow theme, I just dont like how nightblade is a magic dot, instead of a bleed, bleeds are generally stronger than dots, so
I don’t think many players have a problem with the shadow-theme per se, but when it was added in Legion it removed much of what made sub-rogues such an enjoyable and fun to play spec.
This is a very good point, many of the new animations and sound effects introduced in legion and bfa have been worse than what they were replacing, and that goes for many classes. Sound effects and animations need to fit the theme and fantasy of a class, and respect the legacy of the class as well, let´s face it, people are attached to their favorite classes and don´t want certain things to change too much.
You don´t change a winning formula - you can tweak it - but you don´t fundamentally change it. If they want to introduce new themes in classes, they better do so with new classes being introduced, not destroying peoples beloved characters they have mained for 10+ years.
People used to macro Shadowstep+Ambush, and effectively that was Shadowstrike. I guess Blizzard liked the idea of Subtlety Rogues being able to teleport and hit everything, so they made it into an ability. In ways, I think it has made Shadowstep a bit redundant for the spec, so I wouldn’t be against just using Ambush instead. The one thing Sub has going for it is mobility, but I’d be willing to let some of that go in order to steady things out a bit. This might require a longer CD for Shadow Dance, but that could help with balancing the Sub’s damage as well.
