Why do Shamans use shields?

Does no one find it strange that Shamans use shields? Considering that only the caster specs use them?

I dunno, just a thought.

Maybe because shamans were wearing low armor gears like leather and cloth up to 40 back in older expansions. Shields were there to add more armor?

i mean why not? theres plenty of other item types wich often just served like a stat stick.

Bows for warriors/rogues for example

Shields give some much needed armour rating, and maybe it fit thematically as a more savage-themed off-hand option compared to the tomes, vials, and other off-hand items other casters can use.

Cause they can cast lightning, earth and water shield! It all makes sense now

Because a shield + main hand gives more stats than most staves. Shields are just a stats stick.

Because in the beginning Blizzard were considering them as tanks. Take a look in Classic shaman has spells with high threat. Pretty cr*p as it often over agro’s.

This, they were a half finished tank class.

Yeah, the half-tank is what I remember back in vanilla. It was earth shock, wasn’t it? I think it was like their version of taunt.

In beta, I believe rogues had shields as an option too.

Shields help out caster survival a bit. Especially years ago when you felt really squishy. We often used shamans to tank one of the four horsemen in vanilla Naxx. That shield helped.

Because in Vanilla this used to tank up to level 40 alongside paladins and warriors.
