Why I stopped playing wow

I’ve played wow on and off for a lot of years. I played mostly during BC, WotLK and a bit during MoP. Have even been playing a bit on private servers (god forbid). I’m not a hardcore wow fan although I do like the game. I more of a semi-hardcore mmorpg-fan. I love playing mmorpg and during periods I play them a lot.

I decided to give wow another go right before BFA release, played for about 1-2 month and quit. Why? Here’s a few reason:

Boring and unrewarding grinding
Grinding is a part of almost every mmorpg, it’s nothing strange with that. Some people like it, some people hate it and some people like me are just kind of “meh” , either way.
The thing about grinding in WoW is that it’s boring. It’s not challenging, it’s not amazing content or stories you play through. It’s just grinding. One of the bigger problems is World Quests. They’re fun/intresting like once. After that it’s just the same old boring stuff over and over and over and over again with next to no variety
Grinding is a part of mmorpg, but it doens’t have to be mindlessly boring. Another one is Azerite armor. Or well gear in general. I’ve never enjoyed the low drop chances of the items you want, endlessly grinding the same dungeons and raids over and over again hoping you get the item you want. And I don’t know if the weekly chest is still as bad as it was when I played but I didn’t get a single item at all during my 1-2 month from the weekly chest that I acctually used. On any of my 5 lvl 120.

Unfriendly towards variety and alts
I enjoy trying new things when I play. I like testing new classes and making alts. I like trying new builds to see wich one I enjoy playing the most. I like playing as a healer, a tank and a dps. I like to switch around.
WoW is nothing about that. It seems more guided towards having 1 character, 1 build and that’s all you play. Sure you CAN change your builds but with the current azorite reforging system you got to grind for a few weeks if you want to be able to switch builds for a few days. I can switch from tank to healer to tank to dps to tank again in a single day. I do that because I enjoy playing like that and because I enjoy filling in the spots that are needed in my group. WoW is not friendly towards that kind of play at all. Instead of having a encouraging people to spend their time playing the way the want to play WoW is more about playing the way the developers think you should.

Alliance and Horde
Here’s one that I think a lot of WoW players might disagree on, but I really don’t like the split between Horde and Alliance. In theory it’s really cool. 2 sides against eachother fighting. In reality it causes inbalance. In some instances one side has greater numbers than the other. For example Battlegrounds. Play Horde - que time 15-20 min. Play Alliance - que time 2-5 min. And the biggest turn off for me was finding out a lot of my old friends and even a few of my colleagues bought BFA too only to find out I couldn’t play with some of them because we weren’t the same faction. Like playing with friends is a big part of playing games.

Quests are dull
I don’t know about everyone else, but I feel like if you’ve done 10 different quests in wow, you have done them all. Pretty much everything is the same. Talk to this guy, go there, talk to that guy. Talk to this guy, go somewhere and kill something or loot something, go back. It’s all pretty much the same.

Lack of content
Despite being one of the biggest games on the market, WoW lacks a lot of content compared to it’s competitors. I often found myself bored while playing wow which doesn’t happen often in some of the other mmorpg’s I play. I did some m+, some raids, 2’s and 3’s and messing around in some old content. But that’s about it. That’s all I had to do in WoW.

I stopped playing 5 month ago because I was really dissapointed with how the game has turned out. Why am I making this post? Well I just bought a new 1 month sub to give it one more go again and already regret the purchase now 4 hours later. I wanna write it of.

Pretty sure there’s a lot of people who might disagree with a few things I mentioned, pretty sure some will agree. But how do you people feel about the current state of WoW? Are you happy with the direction Blizzard is taking the game? Are you confident and trusting towards them to give you the good quality game and content you pay for?

Ok thanks for that

Most of this was something I can relate to, but this game was build on 2 rival factions. The statement you make that “this game is meant to be played with friends and therefore this and that barrier should be removed” is one of the reasons why this game is going so boring and dull. The game should go back to having separate realms to create a community inside it, so you get to know the players around you and be part of the world. That’s what any game should be if they want to call it MMORPG. If you want to play with your friends, then create a character on the same realm (or transfer the character). Maintaining the 2 factions is of course something that we should keep or the game will change even more dramatically, taking away all the world PvP and rivalry between factions.

Not that I agree with OP, but dismissing an argument because of something as superficial as an alt just weakens your point and makes you look like you cant refute his point so you instead attack his character…

Its low effort and it shows

I dont like it at all. I enjoyed it more during wotlk mainly due to class design. You had something to strive for and classes required skill to be good. You could tell the difference between a good and bad player. Right now the game is trying to make everyone a winner, champion no matter how long you have been playing. Its just super boring.

That’s a problem in corporate ran gaming in general at the moment, their chasing after the mythical “Wider market” without realizing that appealing to everyone appeals to no one.

I hope you find a new game that does excite you. Wishing you all the best in your gaming adventures

I found that very hard to believe. Rng can be bad…but dude 4 weeks on five or so chars … dont make things up. Another story is if u did only +2 keys.

Ok sonive seen this argument alot across the forums. So can u tell me an example of fun to do quests? How would you fix this issue? How to improve that. And llease be very specific i would truly love to know…because idk how to make quests fun.
