Being on the GCD means that you should basically never use this ability if mangle, trash or pulverise are off CD, if you have a galactic guardian proc, if there are 3 targets or more (and even with two targets its a trivial dps gain over swipe) and obviously if you need the rage for defensive abilities.
As you usually will prefer to use rage for defensive abilities anyway, maul would still have rather niche role even if it didn’t cost a GCD. The fact that it costs a GCD makes it virtually pointless: only sustained single target dps in trivial content will see you using this ability if you even remember you have it, and given that you will do mass pulls even on bosses in trivial content, you are far better off using spare GCDs on swipe which on heavy AOE will do vastly more damage.
Because of garbage class design, basically.
It got hit by the GCD wave already in Legion, and with the removal of the passive that could make it cost free, you want to wonder whether the people working in the dev team have any sort of brains.
It didn’t use to be and back then you would just macro it with your other attacks. They should have just removed it instead of putting it on gcd.
Prune please
For the same reason Blood Boil, early Ignore Pain and Hand of the Protector are on the gcd. Not to mention all offensive/defensive cooldowns such as Dancing Rune Weapon, Fiery Brand and Demo Shout:
I listen a lot of people claiming they don’t have Maul in their bar. Please don’t do that.
While Maul is a situational and mainly inconvenient skill to use with our current design it is still valuable.
When fighting an encounter which most of the damage intake is magical, IF is useless and you rather convert your rage into FRs and Mauls, to help take the mobs down faster.
Also when in situations that a boss isn’t directly attacking you, and you have excess rage use Maul.
f.e. when Rezan is fixated on someone else other than you, and you don’t have any adds to tank.
8.2. improves our rage regen overall, so you might find more windows of opportunity to use Maul.
