Why is the Shadowlands cinematic disliked so much?

I didn’t dislike the cinematic, as always it looks awesome.

I just think they went a bit far in showing how overpowered Sylvanas is.
I didn’t mind her winning or whatever, but at least make it a fight. For all the good Lich Bolvar did she might as well have walked up to him and kicked him in the groin and taken the helmet while he rolled around on the floor.

Tbh I was surprised they actually went with this :joy:

As much as I hate Sylvie there is one thing that bothers me about a lot of the anti sylvie comments.

The fact that she got promoted due to familial ties instead of being the perfect ranger actually makes her a better character. Think about it… if she got promoted due to her achievements we would have had more reasons to call her a marysue. No, that’s just good storytelling, sometimes people end up in positions due to coincidence, okay, and sometimes they end up doing great things. Or bad.

As for why the cinematic was so disliked… visually it was stunning. The CGI team is at the top of their game.

I don’t think there is but one reason why it is so disliked. There’s plenty of reasons.

Firstly, we don’t like overpowered marysues. Did anybody like Green Jesus? He deserved that name and became a complete meme -for a reason-. But at least Thrall wasn’t a complete c*nt. Do any quest where Sylvanas has more than 2 lines, the way she nasally whispers her snarky comments…

Now one difference between green jesus and sylvie here is that we never really saw green jesus beat a literal demigod of the warcraft universe in a MAJOR CGI CINEMATIC.

Sure, he had his moments in some cutscenes. But trust me, if him shooting down Deathwing happened in a CGI cinematic there would have been just as many complaints on the forums.

Bad guys and major characters such as Deathwing and LK deserve respect. They have a certain status to uphold.

I think we would have been less pissed if she had to at least put up a real fight to win against Bolvar. Sylvie fans keep saying he is no Arthas but he’s still the one keeping the Scourge from completely swarming -all- continents. That is a lot of power.

Speaking of power. Power comes at a cost. Take the Lich King himself, for example. He’s kind of stuck to his throne, and the person he once was is slowly lost. That is the terrible cost of being the LK. Being a warlock has its cost. Eevery character that has freely exercised strong magic effortlessly has gotten sht from the fandom in the past. Jaina, Khadgar, Rhonin, Thrall. Sylvie is commanding even more powerful magic than they and she got to show it off in a cinematic.

the problem with that is that blizz claims shes a tactical genius when what she’s shown shes not even fit to polish the boots of one

Blizzrd is notoriously bad at actually showing characters be good tactical geniuses. I think Azmodan from D3 is the most obvious example and scapegoat. But he’s not the only one. Archimonde and Kil’jaeden from WoW were also meant to be masterminds.

I was expecting some twist with Kil’jaeden. Did he really just sit there and wait for us like Illidan did atop Karabor in TBC?

You know that arthas was weaker than lei shen who was only on wild god level? Meaning Arthas wasn’t near a demi god and neither was Bolvar

Illidan had no time to plan. He was at 1% power and almost died trying to find the home world of the legion. If he would have concentrated on us, we probably would have lost but the legion would win years later

The cinematic was awesome.
People just hate Sylvanas very much so they crushed the dislike button to make themselves heard.

Yeah, that’s his rewritten lore. Initially he was just up there, brooding, and slowly going mad.

The losers who spend their free time being mad about Captain Marvel and the Star Wars girl need a new female character to make 1000 angry whiny Youtube videos about.

well there nothing wrong with female characters as long as their well written that goes for men too but terribly written men often get a pass as male bias :stuck_out_tongue:

if you write a stupidly op gary stu a lot of men will not call out on it and be like this guy is awesome but if you write a equally stupidly op mary sue its instantly wrong

Thrall and Rhonin didn’t exactly get a free pass due to male privilege. Except they did not appear in a major cinematic and weren’t complete brats to begin with.

Its disliked because people purposely ignore Sylvanas’ development and story since the start of Legion just to continue to hate her. Its also disliked because those people also love to think that the Lich King is still a demigod tier villain, while ignoring that he doesn’t have Frostmourne, nor the armor that gave Arthas a significant powerboost and he has a broken tortured body.

I was never a fan of Sylvanas but her development makes a whole lot more sense than Thrall becoming green jesus in Cata or Jaina having her arcane enchanted flying warship that she conveniently forget how to use after one battle.

I think you have it misunderstood, people who dislike her don’t think of her as their ‘waifu’.

Only Sylvanas fans think of her as their ‘waifu’. I don’t like her and find the constant focus on her, over other much more interesting characters to be less than appealing

It felt small in scope after the fantastic Battle for Azeroth cinematic, which took place in the Battle for Lordaeron.

It involves Sylvanas yet again. I am very fed up with her, and I’m not a huge fan of her voice actress either.

I had hoped for somewhat of a clean break from Battle for Azeroth, with a new cast of character and a setting which hadn’t already been discussed to death.

I dislike the way the fight worked out. It looked visually pleasing, but it’s bad storytelling to just have Sylvanas walk all over everyone and then expect us to understand that there is a reason for it once we play through the expansion. All I have is what I know right now, everything else is speculative, and what I do know tells me that it feels super contrived and over the top whenever Sylvanas beats everybody up like that.

i don’t mind her voice actress but i do think Sylvanas’s arc to reach this point has been pretty badly written there almost no real justification for her head not be on a spike after dying as a raid by now for her many crimes other then that she is the writers pet

They could have at least made her power creep show through the story line for alliance and horde. She went from a deathly scared elf cowering in Undercity to suddenly being ‘rawr rawr I am super woman sylvanas’ through part of BFA.

The feedback it’s gotten is interesting yeah.
For me, it was very unsatisfying to see that Sylvanas managed to beat up Bolvar without a single scratch. I frankly could care less about her source of power at this point in time.

When I saw Bolvar get up from his throne, I wanted him to be badass, but ultimately, he seemed pretty inept at fighting back.

We recently saw Sylvanas fight Saurfang and get physically hurt in the fight. Supposedly, she was thrown off by his words. This is just a classic case of writers needing a reason to force through one instance over another and many fans aren’t having it.

At the end of the day, could Bolvar have been made to have put up a fight? Yes, yes he could. The only limitation was their creativity, so they effectively chose not to, and that is my reason for disliking it.

It looks amazing and voice actors are great, so it’s got that going for it.

Although, the choreography of the fight seemed like something straight out of an Anime at times: Specifically with Bolvar throwing glaciers at Sylvanas. She also took out an army of scourge, which is kind of down there in that territory as well. I don’t dislike anime, but it’s not very fitting for the WoW setting imo.

i dunno wow has always had many anime troops like where men’s muscles have muscles (i blame jojo) or wield sword the size of skyscrappers or wear shoulders that are in no way practical

when your average male wizard look like he hits the gym everyday you start to question the setting :stuck_out_tongue: heck the wow comic human and orcs look like they could bench press a car a lot of people wanted the thin kul’tiras to better represent what their ideal wizard would look like

Because this is the THIRD expansion cinematic that had Sylvanas in it. She’s getting too much spotlight. She’s a boring and annoying OP trash character liked only by her extremely vocal and equally annoying fanbase, and giving her a third cinematic where she’s plays a major role is a serious overkill.
