Why low level characters damage is so over-scaled compared to higher ones?

Of course it doesn’t matter to much, it’s just strange that a level10-15 character in the dungeon group will do like x3-4 more damage than a level30 or 40 characters, while basically clicking a single ability. Ofc it’s nice to get such character in a group once you are higher, since they make the run super fast, especially something like level10 arcane mage (good one will do like 90% of group damage while spaming arcane explosion).

Because the lower level you are, the less you have access to:

  • Mobility
  • Control
  • Defensives
  • Interesting ability interactions (not just 1111111 for damage)

And so on, and so forth. And in every situation, Blizzard apparently reasoned that the lowbies are to be compensated with more damage on those few buttons they do have.

I think this is good because:

  1. people doing dungeons together in less level brackets means that there are more people in the bracket and so shorter wait times

  2. it keeps lower level players viable and less of a burden to the group

Leveling dungeons are just for leveling anyway, as long as you complete it in a reasonable amount of time (“eww Motherlode”) then who cares who did how much dps. The game isnt balanced around low lvl dungeons.

There are 2 reasons for that.

  • Low level characters tend to kill equal level opponents faster, it’s pretty consistent across most RPGs to compensate for newer players being less experienced and having less abilities to use.
  • Low levels can have a great power disparity between one being fully decked in heirlooms or coming from a classic starting zone in white gear no shoulders, helm or jewelery. To make the latter not completely useless means the former will be overpowered. They could solve this by balancing leveling gear but we all know they aren’t going to invest resources into that.

Because leveling up is supposed to make you feel weaker!

mobs have less health at lower levels, and your damage takes off more %health…

so you will literally run around nearly one shotting monsters at level 1 - 9 …

it is very bad design tbh in my personal opinion…

it kind of killed leveling dungeons for me when they made this change.

you always get some arcane blast spamming level 10 mage running around killing the entire dungeon … while a level 45 - 49 actually have to fight them.

WoW is at a point now where the best move now would be to remove levels all together and have one consistent difficulty through out the open world.

no levels would actually lead to a highly balanced and more interesting game with fun encounters in the future.

EDIT: not to mention no levels would mean all content would be open to do anytime and be relevant … all raids / dungeons … open world group areas would make a comeback…

pvp could actually finally be balanced and fine tuned to a high standard…

you name it.

Tbh, it’s not awful reasoning.

And I did enjoy being top dps as a holy priest 10-49 :joy_cat:

Funny when people post DPS meters in levelling dungeons.
“LOAWLZ I OUT DPS YOU NOOB SCRUB”
Nobody cares, at all. In a normal dungeon we just want to get through it as painless as possible, it’s not a competition.

Because this is the design philosophy theyre going with. Leveling up feels like youre leveling down quite honestly. With each level your damage feels lower because everything around you scales up with your level…so everything takes longer to kill and ppl in dungeons do actualy way more damage than you with lover level because they are low level and each ability at low level hits for half mob hps and then it converts %tualy to thr hp number/damage you see compared to them.

Its insanely idiotic way to aproach leveling and it makes it pointless. …the more abilities and levels you have…the weaker you feel in current modern day wow leveling…
Feeling excited to finaly get your aoe spender or aoe ability at around level 24±? Excited to finaly try it out in dungeon because it felt dogpoop to single mobs out? …JK one shield slam from prot warrior at level 15 did more damage than your entire toolkit combined.

Exactly, and I’ve seen people even kicking lower dps players from a group, in hopes of getting lowbie that will boost. Gogogo mentality I guess

Have you seen level 11 twink monk who does boosting in tbc dungeons?

Leveling is fast but its mess atm.

Also, because leveling is way too fast, new players don’t get enough gear. By the time you have a complete gear set, you have outleveled it by 10 levels. Blizzard’s solution to this massive problem is to boost the low level damage scaling, so new players can actually beat the game.

Early on, one dungeon is one level, and you maybe get 1 (one) piece of loot from it. When new players unlock Freehold, chances are they will level up 2-3-5 times without getting a single piece of loot.

However, the flipside is that if you have a set of looms you get to blast, because the scaling is the same, but you actually have gear.

They make changes so often so balance is not possible.

I personally think it is just to discourage people kicking out lower geared players. If the damage difference between higher and lower level people would be massive, lower level people would be kicked on the spot.

Beside the occasional outliers I feel that this is fine enough (arcane could use a change though. There is literally no way to hold aggro on a level 10-11 player spamming Arcane explosion on groups of mobs.)

Atm we have oposite - lower levels kick higher level ones for low dps

That is because you cannot save people from being dumb.

It is the way it always worked. I have been leveling two characters thus far over the course of the leveling event and thus far in the dungeons I have been in (Classic dungeons and WOTLK dungeons) I have no seen this matter pop up even once out of the 30-40 dungeons I have done.

And in terms of DPS, as I mentioned, there are only like 1 or at most two classes that have this weird damage difference (arcane mainly since they have access to AoE right from the start) while the others are within reasonable difference between each other.

BM hunters above level 40 also do insane damage from what I have seen.
