Why people play Horde

I’ll explain the make-up of the WoW community as a whole and then get into the psychology and personalities that would be drawn to Horde in particular.

Think about what you think your average WoW player looks like in real life, as well as their personality, interest, musical tastes, artistic style, especially if they are super into the game.

I personally worked in the industry for a short time and went to work in an office with hundreds of gamers and employees and I can tell you from first hand, many gamers, not all, fit a profile.

Artistic style: Goth, dark, metal, anime, splashes w some color like they’re Harley Quinn
Music: Metal, Punk, Rock, some other forms of electronic music
Personality: Sensitive, socially awkward, overly serious and detail/fact oriented, basically nerdy
Favorite color: BLACK
Favorite body art: Some tattoo of some Marvel character, piercings in the nose, multiple in ears
Mental health issues: Rampant…depression, sufferers of abuse, excluded, bullied
Societal standing: Outcast, loner, non-athlete or interested in physical activity in general like the gym/fitness) wellness

For a lot of these people, at least in the U.S., they’re the kind of people that found sanctuary and identity in video games and going against the societal norms, being and accepting being “different” and becoming a part of community of essentially outsiders.

Ion, the lead game director for WoW is basically as close as you get to a hybrid in that industry. He’s a mix of having some social aptitude, being communicative without need raging and yet still being intellectual and factual, which is what the personalities playing this game demand most, they just want information.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some cool people, but people in this community are generally stiff and not very loose and charismatic, not exactly the ladies man or social butterfly in society. They’re at least a little awkward, a little socially off balance, care about a lot things other people don’t, are sensitive to humor, easily offended and prone to drama because internally they’re very insecure about themselves so they automatically defend themselves.

So with all that said, after reading all of what I wrote about, would these people choose Alliance?

Alliance represents the things in society that they don’t connect with or have been excluded from?

The Alliance is like social media, society, TikTok and Instagram. It’s pretty, brighter, more happy. It has cities, races that they already know and don’t feel a part of or don’t even want to be because of the relation to their own personal lives.

The “attractive” Female, much like the attractive women in real life that they don’t look like or never had a chance with or teased by.

The “attractive” Male, more handsome and muscular than they are in real life only reminds them of their insecurity as they are very likely not anything like that in real life.

Why not be the faction that represents the Gothic Undead, which already fits their style/personality. Why not be the angry, scary, monster Horde that is strong and not human so they can crush the very humans they despise in their very own world that they cannot?

Why would a group of people, feeling excluded from society, pick the faction that represents everything they are insecure about and not the faction that provides them with an escape from society, much like everything else, their interests and all which are much like a result of their lives and how their personal experiences have shaped them more than they ever consciously chose it, they just simply followed the same path as others like them.

It’s not true…i WANT PLAY ALLIANCE…BUT players base is noticeable smaller. Try to compare number of events nearby end of some patch, content, season.
Stop trying to make from horde something cool, it’s in state like this these days cause had op racials in the past, further was only snow ball effect.

Yeah I don’t know what you’re talking about op but I’m considered socially awkward, shy in public, don’t like to be in center of attention and I play alliance, I don’t think it has much to do with what you wrote there

Horde just have the potential to be more interesting as a faction, given the different races that have joined up.

The Alliance are composed of races that are very much alike, the Night Elves are the only real outsiders.

I see what you’re going for but there are plenty of socially awkward nerds or people that used to be that were drawn to wow in general. Maybe back in classic wow it was more clear cut with alliance representing the high fantasy trope with wizards, knights and dwarves etc. and horde being the darker, anti-hero and misunderstood faction. Now both factions are fulfilling several tropes like horde has highfantasy with the bloodelves and nightborne, alliance has darker elements like void, dark iron and void elves.

4 mythics in row and still no gear.

That’s funny actually. You want to act as if this whole post is a very deep psychological analysis of things, but it’s full of garbage if i’m being brutally honest.

The socially awkward and all that type you mentioned prior, would definitely pick a more masculine or a more beautiful looking human for themselves, because they see themselves in this world of fantasy as those who they want to be. They don’t shy away from it because of their looks.

Blood elves are just as attractive, if not more to most people, than humans of this game. So based on your logic, people avoid them as well?

Sorry but your whole post is ridiculous.

The reason people pick horde is generally the following.

1- They’ve chosen horde a long time ago and just go with it.
2- They prefer the horde races for whatever reason. Aesthetic or theme or lore or whatever else.
3- They kind of enjoy acting as a villain in the game. because even though alliance and horde are both equally guilty or innocent, the horde is generally shown as the more evil ones.
4- They played alliance. PVE is terrible on alliance side, so they swapped to horde.

I agree its pointless to try and generalise across the board what kind of psychology is x. Ive dabbled with both factions but when I started out playing the reasons were clear to me. I went horde playing Troll and Forsaken because I loved the forest trolls from w2 and darkspear from w3 and my favourite campaign was the Scourge one. Might have picked a Scourge faction instead if possible.

TIL that Dr. Phil plays WoW on the EU client and posts on a low level Mag’har orc. :exploding_head:

If your theory was true most people would play Fat’tiran.

People go there to raid and get advantage of overpowered racials. Pet faction of blizzard, there is no need to psycho analysis.

I read through all your post and i really couldn’t find sense on it.

Playing a RPG game is all about what you want your character to be not choosing what is closest your real life.

By the way, Orcs, the race you ironically play, are the closest thing in the game we have to school bullies: Muscular, dumb and easily angered.

Oh man I loved Horde in wc2, specially forest trolls and orcs… Zul’jin and all the other badass orc characters were so cool, and I was so disappointed what they did with Orgrim and Ner’zhul in WoD

Very interesting read, thank you

Team blue in my heart - team red in game simply because of a better raiding community. In fact I know entire guilds who wish to play alliance, but feel they can’t.

I went with Horde cause of Tauren Druids on my very first character, and stuck with the faction for sake of trading between my characters, and folk I befriended way back in TBC.

Simple as that.

I lile orcs and I like humans. My two all time favorites from vanilla times. I would make human character if they could be shamans.

We have bulky human shamans though

Haha yeah… I was super excited for WoD at first because I thought we were going to get to sort of experience and meet the characters of w2 but quickly got disappointed instead. Man that sucked. I really think WoD could have been amazing, the detail they put into the world was huge but it was lacking in other departments. Would still to this day re-roll a Forest Troll in a heartbeat if that ever became an option in wow.

Yeah that’s sad… Maybe if Blizz would have made races have corresponding racials from the get go, so you had an alliance version of berserking or hardiness on dwarves for instance, so that each faction would be “equal” in terms of power and opportunity but with their own flavour. Guess it’s too late for all that now tho.
