Light in Warcraft Lore is a type of energy, and it’s radiant by nature, it doesn’t behave like a fluid. And even if we go by your description, Liadrin sounds in her prayers like she is talking about a physical liquid. One could think, that the writer of this scene thought that there was liquid light in the sunwell, which is an easy mistake, yet logically very wrong, but it also shows that they might not know the wow lore themselves.
So in terms of text, this trailer is very weak for me, but I did need to sleep a night over it to notice this, so it’s not that obvious either.
Light can also “flow through you” as in “enveloping your very body”. It’s an old, visual-speaking expression. Especially one used in german language (with its respective counterpart expression). I don’t know about other languages.
And as I linked in another topic to the WoWhead Analysis of the trailer and Liadrins struggle. She has faith in the Light but not herself in that moment. She is practically “praying” down a mantra she has spoken over thousands of times before. Only now it’s not working anymore.
It’s metaphorical speech, nothing else. And metaphorical words are never meant to be taken face-value.
If anything, it’d would be correct, if she said “The light fills me”, or “The light imbues me”, but what she says makes no sense. Can you imagine the Light to curve and meander? I don’t. There is also not gonna be turbulence or something similar with light. It just is a very obvious logical/intellectual error by whoever wrote this cinematic.
You may want to look up on google with the search bar having “The Light flows through me” also with the quotation marks (so it searches for the literal sentence). You will find A LOT of examples in fictional religion where this type of phrasing is used.
And especially in Warcraft, it’s a VERY common expression for the Church of Holy Light.
Then a lot of fictional stories have big logic errors, and some writers lack common sense. Also, not only that it doesn’t make sense on a logical level, it also doesn’t make sense in the wow lore. And that is not the only one, I noticed other non-sense phrases too.
I think you lack common sense because you struggle to grasp the logical definition of “metaphorical speech”, no offense meant.
Here a few other examples of such speech:
“All the world’s a stage”
“He has a heart of gold”
“She is a ray of sunshine”
“Time is money”
“The city that never sleeps”
None of those are literally how the world or anyone is. They “describe with imaginery visualization emotions, feelings or states”. It’s paradox by nature.
That’s clearly not what’s going on. She’s performing a ritualistic light prayer in the story, repeats the same sentence multiple times, and what she says just doesn’t make sense, neither in wow lore context, nor does it make sense just based on common sense. She’s not just saying a random figure of speech. That matters. It’s a wow cinematic, not some random quest text.
Maybe an odd question but do you even practice a religion? If not, I’m not surprised you struggle with this concept of figurative, metaphorical speech in this situation.
It’s one of the defining types of speech used in religious works and rituals.
We are talking about LIGHT in world of warcraft, not about a religion from real life. We see Light “physically” in the game. We know what it is. It’s not an abstract. The way it is written, almost sounds like the writers don’t know the wow lore, and just made it cliché with some random phrases they heard somewhere without thinking about it at all.
What Liadrin said, could be something a Shaman or a Monk says, because their energy behaves this way, but not Light. You would also not hear a Demon Hunter talk like this about Fel, because that doesn’t make sense in the same way.
The Light is a religious force in World of Warcraft.
Paladins are literally Holy Knights… My man, what were you thinking what the Light is?
It’s a divine force that also appears physically. It is not the same Light as sunrays or the physics phenomenon of our reality.
This is what the google summary tells us (and to my knowledge everything about this is correct because I am quite versed in writing and language use for fictional stuff);
The phrase “something flows through me” is not a common idiom in everyday English. It is more likely to be used in a figurative or poetic sense, often in the context of spirituality, creativity, or intense focus.
Elaboration:
While “flows through me” isn’t a standard expression, the concept it describes – a feeling of effortless action, deep absorption, and connection to a task or experience – is well-known in psychology and is referred to as flow or being in the zone.
Here’s why “flows through me” is less common and what it implies:
Figurative Language:
The phrase is not literal. It’s a metaphor, suggesting a powerful, almost mystical connection between the person and the activity.
Spiritual or Creative Contexts:
It often appears in discussions about spirituality, meditation, or artistic creation, where individuals might describe a sense of being guided or inspired by a force beyond their conscious control.
Intense Focus:
It can also describe the state of deep concentration where one is completely absorbed in an activity, losing track of time and surroundings, which is a key characteristic of flow.
Yeah it would have added a lot for me to see some orcs, tauren, undead etc joing the defence. Wouldn’t change the overall or the ending etc but would show its not just blood elves alone
xalatath is in long range - This is just factually incorrect from the point of view of real world combat logic
xalatath spell is projectile - This particular spell does not seem to be a projectile, so the whole analogy of gun is incorrect
there has never in fantasy existed a situation, where a melee comes against a mage - Again, this is factually incorrect and there are a lot of sources for blizzard to take inspiration from.
If you can’t come up with what move a highly intelligent and combat-prepared elf like lorthemar could have made when fighting against a mage, borrow it from other fantasy fiction or find real life inspiration
And what? It’s still in world of warcraft, not in real life, and we know what Light is in wow, we know how it behaves. It’s not some meandering energy that behaves like a Liquid, like something a Monk or a Shaman would have. it’s a radiant energy. Same as Fel is explosive. The writers have to know these basics, else the writing is just a collection of empty, shallow phrases.
That’s a big difference to the past, where the dialogue in the wotlk cinematic for example were King Therenas’ fatherly lessons, put into a different context. That was way stronger writing. But to be fair, it’s not obvious, I needed a bit to realize that it’s bad, because it’s masked well with epic-sounding rethoric.
Lorthemar is still standing ca 10-15 yards away from her. That’s still farther away than he can reach with his sword arm.
Also, a ranged weapon doesn’t require to be used on long range just to hit. You can also fire a sidearm while holding it to someones skin
To be more precise, it is an aura spell with individual focus. You can see her eyes glow and a faint, implied spheric aura emanating from her mind (the brain in that case) when she uses her powers. The eyes especially show this.
I have seen many games, movies and shows where this was the case. You are living under a rock or, to further demonstrate the figurative speech for Broduin, “living behind the moon”.
The arrogance to say the writers don’t know the basics while you yourself fail to understand figurative/metaphorical speech, a type of expression not meant to be taken literal. No, just no. I’m done trying to explain a simple concept to you.
I can only give you the advice at this point to take some classes or courses in writing and religious history yourself.
This is BASIC STUFF kids in my country learn in 4th grade! You should understand this since you were 6 years old!
Liadrin is speaking from her religious perspective when praying to the Light. The entire concept of praying is religious by default. It’s LITERALLY THE POINT!
I am so tired of this conversation. It really makes me upset how people use words and don’t even think a second about their origin and invention. You pray to gods and powers. That’s what the entire term is about.
I pray to god that it rains brains so that some day everyone can be an educated mind.
very good I really agree with all of them, especially Liadrin and the fact that the incoming army is only Alliance. Is the Horde this helpless, as if sent by God? Is there no Horde at all?
you were trying to draw on real world logic and talk about ranged weapon negating melee weapon, so I am saying to you right now, that at that point in trailer Xalatath is not in long range.
Your analysis of the combat situation is incorrect in step 1.
It’s a matter of argument, what it is exactly, but it’s certainly not a projectile. So even if she was in long range, which she is not, the spell is not a projectile, so that’s another reason the whole analysis is incorrect at step 1.
This is an archetypical fight in fantasy, it happens all the time. Saying it does not and there are no ready answers, is just factually wrong.
