Why we have armor in our gear but not resistance?

The resistance stats were passive reductions depending on the 5 elements (excluding holy). They never had anything to do with rng.

But even if you just have a single resistance stat you have the same problems. It is still required OR useless, and it just makes balancing so much harder.

For an example just check avoidance. At legion there was so much unavoidable damage/one shots in m+ that it was required to have caped avoidance (20%). Nowadays that such damage is WAY rarer it is almost an afterthought of a stat. For all intents and purposes avoidance IS that resistance stat you talk about, after the balance team had their “word”.

because there are specs that are supposed to have a weakness to magic

Me in Naxxramas for sapphiron. I farmed that frost resistance gear like mad. Boring like hell. Good thing they got rid of it.

Yeah, they did. You could resist spells fully. It was maddening when you had your frost nova resisted by a rogue or warrior and then they slaughtered you.

Yeah, I also wish for it.

Shadowlands could have been one of the best expansions if :

  • Covenants were pure cosmetic
  • Comeback of the old talent trees
  • No renown , but covenants are on the ye olde reputation tab
  • No timegating
  • Soul ash and soul cinders from every content so torghast is a optional content
  • Shadowlands abilites are disabled in pvp
  • Random battlegrounds have templates. 1 conquest set and 1 honor set for rated pvp
  • PvE badge vendor. Earn badges from Raids and m+ and a bit from world content so casual fellows have a chance to buy some gear too !
  • Shadowlands zones should have been connected with oribos in the middle. Think it just like as deepholm.
  • More balanced legendaries
  • Honestly , this one is a weird one but there should be less currencies and more stuff to pay with gold for. But this can lead to game being pay to win so at least remove the currencies from the cosmetic stuff ( Ember court , abom fac. , fae garden thingy and path of ascension )
  • Shadowlands world quests SUCKS. i miss bfa-like ones
  • More love for world pvp content just as bfa nazjatar or mecha ( Adding tons of world pvp rewards maybe ? )

But yeah. Better do a 9.2 video with literally zero to no content in it but hey at least the old lady in the video was wearing a colorful blizz t-shirt ! Hooray !

… as if it isn’t a convoluted mass of stats now, where most people feel they need to use 3rd party systems to work out what gear is best.

Didnt that have more to do with spell hit rather then resistance? And all spells had a base chanse to miss by 5%… then add racials that added to that? Like stun resist of orcs added to the spell resist for pala stuns etc?

No.

They had to disable switching gear in arenas because people switched to resistance gear if they were facing casters. Mages were thoroughly screwed by it, having your frost nova resisted was a death sentence.

This hasn’t been the case for a while now, they created the whole covenant system to make the maths as hard to do as possible.
Ofcourse the vast vast majority of math is solvable by definition of being math so the code was bound to be cracked at some point.
Resistance worked the same as any other stat, x number gets you 1%, which was just 1:1 damage reduction (so 1% DR for 1% resistance) to whatever it offered resistance too, far less complex then all the systems they just keep printing out nowadays

Jup, one of the things that irk me most. Gold is still THE reward for most activities, but in the end, gold is utterly useless ingame, because you can’t buy anything from the new expansion with it… so virtually every activity rewarding gold (callings, quests, boss drops that aren’t an item) is in fact rewarding you with nothing.

Looked it up a bit, frost spells worked a bit diffrently then other spells as it does 2/3 things, dmg and slow/freeze so the resist is binary. It didnt get partial dmg reduction like other spells, it instead missed or hit.

A warlocks shadowbolt would do less dmg but his fear wouldnt miss more often against a shadow ress geared player. Unlike Nova that does dmg and snare.

So yhea, i learned something … old.

What about Legendaries? I could easily spend all my SL-earned gold on Legendaries across my main and alts.

You dont need 3rd party systems if only couple gear pieces give resistances. Or like DH pointed out Enchanters do it on each piece. But yeah wont happen. They want gear to be simple that nobody get confused. People really should play Baldur’s Gate 2 someday to see what real gear in real RPG looks and feels like.

I highly disagree. At no point during SL I had to calculate stats with math to get acceptable results of builds.

I should’ve been clear, it was me recalling Blizzard stating that was the intention during an interview, take it with a grain of salt because I don’t archive these things so my bad
In general I agree that the systems themselves don’t require hard insights on which one is better, but it was what Blizzards intention was.

That said I still find it hard to say that resistance in the context of the type of stat we were talking about being harder then the current covenant system, it really isn’t, because it was just a statnumber gets converted to % and that % is 1:1 your damage reduction from whatever resistance you have.

I would like to see difference what each gear piece gives. For example:

Helm: armor, protection against critical hits.
Neck: stats, resistances.
Shoulder: armor, stats.
Cloak: armor, stats, resistances.
Chest: armor.
Bracers: armor, haste.
Gloves: armor, haste.
Belt: stats.
Pants: armor, speed, resistances.
Boots armor, speed.
Ring: stats, resistances.
Ring: stats, resistances.
Trinket: DPS.
Trinket defence.

See what I mean? Every piece should give something unique imo.

Why would you want a stat for magic just to retune everything end end up with the same things as today?
There already exists a stat like this it is called versatility.
It straight up reduces the damage from everything therefore resisting the effects of magic.

For Blizzard the way it is now it is way easier for them to know how much an ability should hit for as they do not need to take in to account a variable amount of resistance.

I don’t really consider those something worth my gold. I’m still happy with my 9.0.5 legendaries and won’t even look at upgrading them currently; also, those are just so expensive because of other players, not really because they are a good ingame reward. What I mean is mounts and cosmetics, which stay with you for more than the current expansion. I’d prefer it if you could just buy those with gold instead of anima and offerings; or at least convert gold into anima somehow (and I don’t mean by abusing mechanics, as another thread currently suggests).

Because its not the same thing. Also some spirits and other incorporeal or magical beings deal melee damage. It should be shadow damage or magic damage. Just for an example. We have armor and physical threats. We have magical threats but no resistance for it in high fantasy game. Sounds one sided tbh.

Yeah, I get where you’re coming from. I only have 2 legendaries between my 5 level 60 alts, and they’re 9.0 ones. Tbh, I hadn’t really thought about it, but now that it’s been highlighted I realise that I have actually been spending most of my SL gold on pre-SL mounts! I’ve bought the Lightforged Warframe and a few others.
