we used to have other stats but they were removed over the years… resilience is one i can remember off the top of my head. (was related to pvp i think)
While I think the same I can tell you exactly why this is not in WoW.
Blizzard want people to play the game directly and not make math calculations of how stats turn out to get the highest effect for build XY. Sure, we have some geeks that do that still to this day, but it is less messy and more cleaned up.
To quote an example from one of my friends regarding a similar design decision in an other game:
“You know, if I would have to actually calculate numbers in the skill descriptions I would not play this game at all. I don’t like numbers in games to make something work.”
You dont need complex math to tweak your gear. If you getting killed in some encounter, instance or PvP by magical damage you want to replace some of your gear with more resistance for example. Its not really extremely hard brainwork.
We used to have resistances to specific schools of magic. We also used to have expertise, spell penetration, armor penetration and bonus hitchance.
All those things were either destroyed when Garrosh Hellscream decided to use his Hearthstone to escape the prison and then created an alternate universe that has ultimately had no effect on our universe except for a few refugees that joined the horde or they were destroyed when Blizzard paid 2 generic mana and 2 white mana to cast “Cataclysm” which forced each player to choose from among the permanents they control an artifact, a creature, an enchantment, and a land, then sacrifice the rest.
Not really, damage from mobs is tuned to your armor and health. Physical damage a mob does will take into account your armor and health while a magic attack wont, it’ll be tuned based on your expected health.
If we had magic resistance then all they would do is make the mobs hit harder.
Why do most raid bosses hit in melee - because tanks have huge amounts of armor, only special attacks are magic, usually.
We had them at first, but they proved to be more of a nuisance than anything in their initial iteration.
It went along the lines of a flat dmg reduction to a given element, on top of a random chance of getting massively decreased dmg on top of a chance of completely ignoring the ability.
The issue, on top of the randomness, was that you needed a certain threshold to survive mechanics in vanilla and this came at the cost of actual stats. The resistances were basically some kind of requirement rather than an interesting stat.
While the concept in interesting it would need a new design to be worth adding to the game. And even then I wonder what would actually change as we already have specs more focused on physical resistance or magical resistance, especially tanks.
I miss them a lot. hit rating/ Attack power and the like. I never did comprehend the reasoning for removing that. Some say it was to much but IMO it wasn’t really.
Whatever pieces is given the resistance. Sounds like they should be in the jewellery section. Putting all stats on all pieces is stupid and bland design.
Actually I am glad they removed the resistances from gear.
First of all, it was either a stat you NEEDED for a fight, or a stat you ignored. In the second case, you could treat it like avoidance today, but in the cases you needed it for a fight, you had to farm and use subpar gear that had this defensive stat.
Second reason is that it is restrictive. When they design the game, they are mainly using armor as a sort of progression for the tanks, while using magical damage as tuning nobs for mechanics. If you give players the choice to ignore/reduce a certain mechanic, then balancing becomes so much harder.
So yeah, I am glad that it is removed from the game.
Except that there never was one single resistance stat in the past Im referring to. Resistance should resist all magical damage like armor does physical if it were ever reimplemented. Resisting something fully based on rng was bad I agree.
enchanting as that already handles stats.
scribes as that handles stats as well via missives.
gems as well.
But this means blizzard would have to bring back fights with holy/shadow/nature/fire/frost attacks to make it worth while and the last time we had frost res gear was nax in wotlk which was not used anyways.
