World Latency Issues, WinTMR included

Hello, I’ve been experiencing severe latency issues at sporadic times while playing WoW. This affects WoW only, and is limited to world-side ping spiking to the thousands while my home ms stays at a stable 25. My internet stays stable elsewhere even during the lag. I never encountered this issue until renewing my sub this month.

When this occurs I go from 25/25ms smooth gameplay to it straight up being unplayable. I get kicked from dungeons, die, or have to force restart the game. I can still move and the chat works as is standard with world side latency spikes.

Here’s a list of everything I’ve tried so far:

  • Removing and disabling all addons, still occurred.
  • Resetting the user interface by deleting the respective folders.
  • Making sure “optimize network for speed” and IPv6 are both disabled.
  • Trying various router optimizations like ensuring I’m on less congested channels and that my IP is reserved.
  • Reset my network devices.
  • Flushed and renewed DNS.
  • Tried all DNS servers from my ISP, Cloudflare and Google.
  • Ensured there’s no interference from malware.
  • Running both WoW and Battle.net as administrator.
  • Trying to run WoW with a higher priority.
  • Added exceptions to all relevant services in my firewall and Windows Defender.
  • Port forwarded all WoW ports.

I noticed the issue occurred most when in dungeons, or occasionally in cities whenever I’d move between world servers. Yesterday however it was occurring even while levelling in the world. I ran three WinTMRs, pathpings, and traceroutes for each of the three respective EU server IPs as troubleshooting suggested, though I figure only whichever one I was connected to at the time is relevant. I did these while running a dungeon each time to try and replicate the issue.

I have no idea what else to try at this point other than to post the results since I’m not familiar with reading them, though I did notice the same randomly high ping. I only resubscribed since I was planning to anyway for Hardcore Classic soon, and playing the PTR I noticed this same lag. If this continues I simply won’t be able to play it since a DC or lag spike will just kill me every time.

Hello,

I experience lag issues for 2 or 3 days, Tuesday evening or Wednesday I’d say. I got “server world down”, “instance not existing”. Curiosity also, I got rammed away, between the plains and Valdrakken, when I was arrived in artisans’ corner. Half of the NPC of the lower terrace were there, in tailors and cooking area, but nothing furthermore. System pushed me backward - at last location known before packets went down - then finally landing dead on the ground, dismounted from drake. what the heck…

Also, since Tuesday/Wednesday still, logging into the game I’m stuck at 2/3 of progression bar, or even the progression bar doesn’t fill at all. I also got disconnected from using portals, encountered instance not found and so on.

Concerning my connection, it’s 100% safe on my side, I use 3 peers in multiwan Starlink + 2 VDSL.

watching on MTR as I type this message, I have
103.214.60.57 99.4% packet loss and « world server is DOWN » on character screen.

I can second this in Portugal. I’ve been having the same. Losing and not being able to even enter high rated arenas. Very punishing. Basically forced to not play.

Hey Senzora

Looking at the winMTR traces It appears to me that the latency is being introduced in the connection between your ISP and Blizzard’s network. Most likely the ISP has a bad route or their peering point is unhealthy.

You have a couple of actions you can take:

1/ contact your ISP and ask their customer services to pass the results on to their Network Engineers to see if they can move the traffic to Blizzard to a healthier route. Note that ISP customer services are rarely set up to handle issues like this at all well so it may require some persistence to get it to be taken seriously.
2/ Put a ticket in to Blizzard asking for them to pass on to their networking folks to take a look at their peering arrangements with the ISP to see if they can help (or encourage  ) the ISP get the latency down.

Do include the winMTR results in any ticket as it does contains some useful info for tracking the issues down.

Same latency issues for me in Moscow since the 18th of August. Maybe it has something to do with blizz side.

As a last post, what worked for me was ExitLag since it reroutes the packets along a more optimal path for the game instead of the route my ISP uses. My friend is a network engineer and said often ISPs can’t change certain hops / routes anyway, so whether they can even fix it is complete chance.

Getting my ISP to act on anything is a nightmare and I don’t even control the internet bills in this house, so not entirely in my authority anyway. The price of ExitLag was worth it for me to stop getting these issues and I don’t suffer any ping difference, after testing it with their 3 day trial.

Just mentioning it as an option in case people can’t get their ISP to change anything. I’d suspect it’s also a product of how WoW receives data since it’s a very old game at this point, seeing as I don’t have this issue in any other game at all.

Seeing how frequent these threads are and the only solution for a lot of people is to change ISP entirely (which may not even work) or use a 3rd party paid program like ExitLag, I’m sure me and many others would appreciate Blizzard updating WoW’s network systems at some point…
