World of Warcraft's $25 server transfer fee is infuriatingly overpriced

Greetings folks, im making this post to point out that i agree with the writer of this article from the PCgamer site,
i am hoping that by placing it here and maybe if folks let Blizzard know if they agree with what is being written in the article we can get Blizzard to change what they are doing, that is at least my hope. so here is the link for an ariticle written by PCGamer , thank you for taking the time to read through this and letting your opinion be known. (if you choose to do that.) regardless have a great day and thank you for lending me abit of your time. (sorry i have discovered that even using the link icon when writing this post i cannot add a link to this article, you can find it by searching for this in google, apologies for the inconvenience. world-of-warcrafts-dollar25-server-transfer-fee-is-infuriatingly-overpriced/)

Just nuke all servers and do a mega server with channels like Black desert.

This is the best solution.

the char boost is massively overpriced at ÂŁ47 in the uk and all the boosted char gets is 130 lvl gear at 60. blizzard need to overhaul their prices i think

I think alot of this pricing comes from the company not really wanting players to do it, but the players wanting to do it. So they’ve just made it expensive to discourage people from doing it all the time.

It was on special offer last week. I transferred realms for ÂŁ13.30.
Just checked and the sale is still on. ÂŁ13.30 for one character, ÂŁ25.90 for 3, ÂŁ60 for 8.

its still insanely expensive unless its 1 character your transferring, you try and transfer 9+ characters that you have spend over 16 years leveling (and dont feel like starting over spending another 16 years doing the same things ) and not wanting to seperate due to them supporting one another profession wise and in general via mailing things to each other on the same realm, that you would not be able to do if your on another realm, you would have to fork out 160 euro if you use the 8 char packs (2 of those) or buying the 3 char transfers for 35 euro each times 3 that is a hell of a price for transferring characters, it is very common for folks to have a lot of alts and not wanting to seperate them i suspect is also something many dont want to do, so thats a part of why its an issue.

The real reason is much simpler.

Regardless if they like it or not, then the playerbase is what pays their bills, its what funds everything they do, and it seem they are forgetting that, it does not exscuse the exorbitant prices that they demand for character transfers, they exsist for players not the other way around. I get they have a business to run, but you can just compare the prices from lets say the final fantasy franchise for doing the same thing, its a vastly different price that is required for the same service, so Blizzard ought to take a good long look at both their competition and consider what their playerbase wants, not what they want , disregarding your players wishes is going to end up giving Blizzard a kick in the pants, but hey if they dont want this game to succeed long term they are doing a bang up job by ripping folks off as much as possible without considering what people get for it and what keep people playing long term.

Well I’m thinking back to the deep deep past when these services were first introduced.

A character transfer was not something that was possible in the early renditions of the game. It was a long time ago, but I vaguely remember it wasn’t something that was possible on the servers.

So when they started to introduce these services they were creating entire new back end systems to do this (it might have even meant physically moving a character from server to server), but I remember it being really complicated, which is why there was so much hesitation in getting it start, and why the price was so high.

Ofcourse over time the process has become a lot more streamline and the price has just stuck.

But then WoW is a much more premium experience than FF14. Premium usually means a higher price.

Whilst I agree that these services are very expensive. They’re not something I would ever see the need to have if I were paying with real money. Personally, I would just level a new character than boost it, because levelling is the experience of playing WoW (although much worse since the level squish).

But, they’re not trying to stop you from Boosting your character, it just comes at a price. And people are paying that price, otherwise they would lower it.

Some quick sums. A WoW token is: 333k gold at the moment, a Boost is £49. So 5 WoWtokens which is 1.665million gold or £85 for Blizzard. 1.665million gold isn’t very much if you’re dedicated to gold making.

Ofcourse they don’t release figures on that sort of thing, but I bet a huge number of players who are buying these services are paying with Gold. I know I server transferred 10 Characters with gold over the course of 2022. As I said previously, I would never waste my real money on it.

Obligatory “just make a new character on that realm”-comment

I dunno, but I don’t think so. I agree with Billyblue on this. I think they don’t want players to do it, but see the need for safety-valves.

I believe they would make more money - a lot more money - by cutting the prices. But that would lead to instability, and more pressure on already crowded realms. So they allow it, but discourage it with high prices.

Also this. Levelling is nothing now. I have zero sympathy for anyone saying it’s a hardship to pay to level to 60, when you can level to 60 in Retail while re-watching the Lord of the Rings.

Thinking that the services are priced exorbitantly to discourage their sale is a fair assumption, but then why would Blizzard discount them? Unless… They want to encourage people to buy them.

I speculate that the prices are decided based on a trade off of potential time played VS getting the service. You could spend time going to a different server, leveling and gearing up your preferred class; or pay a premium up front so Blizzard doesn’t have to worry about any potential loss with regards to subscription time purchases.

Saying that, I do find the services to be disgustingly overpriced.

What is that supposed to mean?
What makes WoW more premium an experience than FF14?
It cannot be about the story cause FF14 completely stomps WoW on that front.
Gameplay is different but it is not like one is more cheap than the other.
Lets not get started at the armor/weapon models.

The prices are what they are because they can get away with it, nothing else.

And as a result, some people will never do it because paying the price of a discounted game to transfer your character is moronic.

Most of what you say is right. It was quite a long time before they added it in and it can go wrong so they have to do hands-on fixing.
But I was happy to pay to move my horde main to my alliance realm so she can join their guild eventually - the sale came at the right time. Back when most of my characters were created a realm could be down for several days so it was useful to have a set of characters to play on a different realm.

At least be honest about FF14. It has WAY more stuff and it still costs about the same…
