Hello,
I will try to keep it as short as possible.
Yes, it is worth to main tank. But it highly depends on what you like or what you do and what kind of level you wanna play.
- Tanks are by far the most engaging role in M+. They have full controll about everything. (if the others do their job as expected). It is really fun and you can learn a lot in M+
cons: You need to learn a lot of basics like routes, to lead and ofc all mechanics.
Sidenote: While its true that you will allways find a group, the higher you get in M+ the less likely you get an invite as non meta tank. (atm monks are not that great in M+ compared to VDH). So it depends on your lvl.
-
Raid: Raiding as a tank is quite boring. Most bosses are about positioning and taunt. If you dont tank Mythic raids you rarely feel danger as a tank in raids. Also there are just 2 spots, so there are times where you have problems to get invites.

PvP. You can play tank in PVP but it is rarely good or impactful… especially as monk. Tanks that are usefull in PvP atm are Paladins and VDH.
-
solocontent… you can masspull but your damage will suck. So its a trade.
I’d like to expand on the solo content part: no, your damage won’t suck. It will be lower than a DPS’ damage, but you can pull a whole lot more, and that easily makes up for it. It’s much safer as a tank to solo in open world.
Being a tank also makes the Maw and Torghast a whole lot easier too, in my experience.
Just switch between tank and ww, they are both good at certain things. Choose the best tool for the job.
It’s a hard thing to do.
So if you have the skills necessary, it’s worth it.
You can find groups easier. You can progress easier too.
Don’t main tank without guild. PUG life will suck all the will to live from you.
Tanking has pretty steep learning curve, it’s hard enough on it’s own. If you were going to do M+ with guildies then there is high chance of experienced buddies that will guide you and don’t yell at you when something goes wrong. In PUG you will go through trial-and-error hell, stress, frustrations and lots of sweat on your back. Nearly everything that goes wrong in dungeon is perceived as tank or healer’s fault.
Tanking in Shadowlands is pretty horrible in general. With guild it’s bearable when you can coordinate with people through voice chat, with PUG it’s just unrewarding hell when you are not so experienced to not need to communicate with anyone at all, because you have every pack and route memorized already and all the rest just need to mindlessly follow you and kill mobs.
