So after coming back to WoW after years of not playing I attempted to tidy up my account. I seem to have 2 WoW accounts within my battle.net account and wanted to delete the one i don’t use anymore. I also wanted to rename the one I’m using as it seems to have picked up its name from my original e-mail address (that I no longer use).
After raising a ticket I’ve had the following response:
"
Sorry if this hasn’t been made clear previously, but deleting your Wow2 account is not possible due to it previously being licensed.
In the past it was an option, however, due to changes in how licenses act on Battlenet accounts we can no longer delete World of Warcraft accounts. That means I won’t be able to delete the World of Warcraft account at this point in time. I am unsure if that kind of function will ever return. For now the extra accounts will need to remain.
Account license names aren’t something that can be changed. The reason they have a name in the first place is due to World of Warcraft originally being a standalone account. With everything being moved into the Battle.net system years ago it prevents us from changing any World of Warcraft account names. >.<
I can certainly see why you’d want to change the name on the account, but I have no ability within my tools to help change the name on your Wow cocoz020894 account.
I’ll work on sending up some more feedback to our developers about deleting World of Warcraft accounts and updating World of Warcraft account names. If you could make a forum post about this it would be very helpful. Our developers read over the forums daily so any feedback submitted won’t fall on deaf ears. https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/c/community/general-discussion

So here we are.
These issues don’t affect gameplay in anyway but it would be a tidier and better experience for me as a user if I could have my account the way I want it.
I’ll finish with a quote from a senior developer I worked with for a number of years. “Software can do absolutely anything we tell it to, we just have to be clear on what we want it to do.”
Edit: If its needed, the ticket number is: EU77886848
Come to think of it… if you have indicated to Blizzard that you no longer want that account/license then they should be bound by EU law to delete it. They can only hold personal information for as long as they have a business case to do so. That account contains personally identifiable data of you that’s unique to you.
I’d pursue it further and say you’ll report then in violation of the GDPR.
I suggest you remove your account name.
They changed it a while ago. If you’ve ever had gametime on a licence, it can’t be deleted. All the personal information is attached to the battle.net account which can be deleted but will lose everything on the account permanently.
Under EU law the company is required to delete all the information they hold about you upon your request, but not some specific pieces of information. As such, if you want to delete all of your accounts, Blizzard would have to do this, but if you want to delete some of your accounts, they don’t have to do that.
It would be very helpful if they would at least let us mark accounts as inactive so they don’t show up on the selection screen if for whatever internal reasons they want to keep the accounts open.
I would remove the name of that WoW License of yours. Just to prevent possible issues with a beep in the future.
Is it that much of an issue tho? I mean i have a seperate license running too that has no xpacs purchased or a running sub (cant even remember why i have it) and the only moment i remember again that i have it is if select my main license by accident in the launcher.
I’ve wanted to remove inactive accounts for ages because it just makes things look untidy but never understood why Blizzard have a fascination with retaining them.
Even if it was a case of marking them inactive and scheduling them for deletion after a certain period of time (an active process where you have to agree to it - not just deleting accounts whenever people take extended breaks).
I hope you succeed in your mission but I won’t hold my breath.
