Hi,
So I have at the moment an ok internet. If I test my net when running wow I get
Download 27.28Mpbs
Upload 5.12Mpbs
However my issue is, when I open any web page, discord or anything that uses internet WOW lags and it shows I have around 700ms.
When I close the programs I go back to 15ms.
Now the wierdest thing is I can have Discord running in background minimized and wow is find but if I open it to check some chat imediately Wow goes back to lagging.
Has anyone experienced this? I have just moved house and wonder if is something to do with my new router, however have no idea how to fix this.
Any assistance is apreciated.
As is usual, it’s very difficult to diagnose any of this without knowing the specs of your machine and so on>
You say you’ve recently moved and from the speeds you’ve posted it looks to me like you have an ADSL2 connection there. Some suggestions on things to try would be:
-
Switch off your router totally and leave it switched off for 30 minutes then switch back on. This will force the router to re-synchronise with the equipment at the exchange end of your line. You may get a better / more stable connection doing this.
-
What other devices are connected to your router ? 5Mb upload is not very much to be shared between them - someone having a video chat could easily use up a big chunk of that bandwidth.
-
Does your ADSL connection use an external microfilter or is it built into the socket ? If the former, this is like a little box that hangs off the socket and splits it into 2 connections - 1 for the telephone and 1 for the router. Microfilters can often fail and cause strange connection issues. They’re cheap (a few Euros) and can be bought in lots of different places - even some big supermarkets sell them in the UK. I would experiment with replacing this - if nothing else you’ll have a spare for when it does inevitably fail.
Perhaps you could try those ideas and let us know the specs of your machine and other connected devices if you’re no further forwards.
Ty for giving some quick solutions.
The reason I didnt post any specs was because the same pc was working fine 1 week ago and now after moving is causing this issue.
Regarding your other questions there is no microfilter. And I am alone in the house.
So my issue is just with my pc.
The funny thing is I tested it with discord being minimized and the game would run fine. and then open it and the game would fail (as mentioned in previous post)
This happened as well with just opening the mozilla browser. Didnt even have to open a page. Just from opening the browser wow would get laggy
I know you’re alone in the house but are there other devices connected to your router over wireless ? There might be a clue here in that one of them could be hogging a chunk of your bandwidth for some reason. Opening something else on your PC could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.
Some other ideas:
As you’ve moved, have you opened your PC to make sure everything is as it should be ? Nothing has come loose during the move? Seems unlikely I know, but I’d check this - perhaps one of your memory sticks has come loose / out of the socket and you’re suddenly running with far less memory. This is one reason I suggested you post the specs of your PC. I know you say “nothing has changed” but clearly something has changed and it’s very hard to know what other suggestions to come up with.
A couple more ideas:
-
Remove all your addons temporarily (you can just drag the addons folder out of the WOW folder as an experiment)
-
I know Classic isn’t a resource hog in the way that Retail is, but try running with all the settings turned right down
-
It would be helpful if you can post your PC specs
Its a laptop so I am a little afraid of opening it up and checking stuff.
Specs:
|Processor|Intel(R) Core™ i7-8565U CPU @ 1.80GHz 1.99 GHz|
|Installed RAM|8,00 GB (7,88 GB usable)|
|Device ID|CDBD58C2-9DD4-4233-8DAA-8326FF6BBB66|
|Product ID|00325-96657-62636-AAOEM|
|System type|64-bit operating system, x64-based processor|
|Pen and touch|No pen or touch input is available for this display|
Removing addons didnt help. still got same result as above, running great when game was alone and lagging if I opened any other program
The only other thing connected to my router is my phone, which was the same as in my last house
OK - I assumed you were running on a Desktop. Don’t open the laptop for sure !
The specs look OK to me; there’s no graphics card listed there so can’t comment on that unfortunately, but I assume it must be OK given past experiences.
I’m unsure of other things to suggest I’m sorry to say. What might help is to have the Task Manager opened while you’re doing all of this. You can open Task Manager by right-clicking the taskbar and selecting it from the pop-up menu. This will allow you to monitor more closely what resources your various applications are using.
The things I would be looking at are:
CPU usage - is something other than WOW hogging lots of processor time ?
Memory usage - what’s hogging all your memory ?
Network - what applications are consuming bandwidth ?
One last thing I think would be worth trying is a complete scan of your system in case of a virus. I’m assuming you have a decent anti-malware package installed. If you don’t, the one I use personally is “Malwarebytes” and there’s a free 14 day trial of this. I think it would be worth doing a full and exhaustive scan of the system. Note that my Malwarebytes recommendation is purely personal; there are other decent packages out there and it’s not the one recommended by Blizzard
