I have installed the WoW companion app on my android phone that is running the current software amd there is nothing displaying on the character select screen, i have tried on wifi and mobile data and still no luck 
If you are sure you have the latest version of the App then normally you can resolve this with clearing the App Cache or reinstalling the App.
IIRC I had this issue and it was related to having not logged into the game after the patch. It wasnt able to show the squished characters until I logged into the game properly
Have tried the solutions you said no luck unfortunately and i have logged in every day this week 
on all characters
Is it the right region? its by default on US instead of EU on the login screen!

If it helps i have 1000 devices and i sit for 5-10 mins until i remember

Having checked that the app was updated and failed to find anything in there I came here, then checked and reset the region to EU correctly . I finally got the character list selection screen to load and joyfully selected main character. At this point the app folded up on itself and closed down. Hard work for no return…,
