WoW for new players

Hello Community

I try to get my girlfriend to get into WoW in the past few days and my conclusion is, that its impossible. Now I have to engineer a good introduction into the game with a reasonable learning curve while having fun while playing… (more on this later on)

I see two huge problem with the state of the new player experience right now. It would not be critic, if i don’t suggest a solution for every problem, so i will deliver my thaughts:

Spells, actions and interface:
a) As far as i remember, you can’t chose the server of your first character (who starts wow alone lol)
→ the solution would be easy, let them chose their server or even more advanced: if i refer a friend, the friend should see, where my characters are or wich server i have characters on

b) you get bombarded with spells early on, especially with spells you don’t need. Just to put this in perspective… you take 2 quests per level in the early game. After each two quest you have to read ~three spells and the quest texts, so you will read more than you play.
→ here are many possibles solutions acceptable. You could change the order and the level of the spells for example (a level 3 warlock does not need curse of weakness). You also could do a “training” every 5 level or so, where the player gets introduced in a new mechanic. Not everyone knows what a curse is and what special. You could also let the new player chose a specialisation with a default option, so they just get the spells to play and get in touch with all the other mechanics.

c) the introduction in missing some features of the interface
→ for example the blue and yellow bubbles for quest objectives on the map

Lore (of cause)
I know, this is a really difficult part to fix entirely, but in my opinion nothing would be better than the state right now. You get thrown into random story’s and the whole experience is like a 60 level fever dream. I actually feel bad for my gf, that she has to go through that before she can experience the game!
→ I have some idea’s for this.
a) Chromietime 2.0: You have to go to every expension with the intro Trailer. Then you will go throu a small campain with a few quests per Zone, to get an idea of the expansion. You will also participate in a “fake raid” to defeat the bosses , so you get the whole story’s and cutscenes.
b) a leveling zone without lore
c) you can do the newest expansion from start to max level in some kind of form
d) Halls of history: this is a focus, not only for new players but also for “on off players”. Here you could display a timeline, where the player is right now in terms of knowledge and raidbosses. You can display the good and the bad guys as model, let the player rewatch cinematics, chose a chromietime path (even at max level, for example for transmog from the raids), and the player could start either the corresponding campain of a “chapter/major patch” or maybe a custom made campain for them specific. That would reduce the pain, when you had a half year break and then you come again and dont know, wich campain is the next you didn’t play.

Now a quick word for my solution right now. I will suggest my gf to buy TWW, then boost a character to 70, make a dracthyr and then play dragonflight. I will assist her with the actionbars, banning all spells she doesn’t need an when she gets the hang of it, we could open the spell range fourther.

Let me know what you think and if you have more advices for new players, don’t hasitate to bring it!

Why not just introduce her to Classic Era instead?

classic has a great pace in terms of leveling speed, but after that it’s more time consuming. I think we will play casualy and for my experience, there is no space for that in classic…
Also, i don’t know, why i should waive quality of life things AND dragonriding(!!)

I’d say level a evoker from scratch so she can get a better understanding, also in TWW evokers will start at level 10 if I’m not mistaken.

Also check wowhead, Icyveins and Murlok io for the best builds based on what she enjoys whether is Mythic+, or raiding or PvP

she wont read build’s and i understand it. You should be able to play the game basics without a book full of guides…

100% agree with you, it is best to play the way its best for you, but my suggestions are simply the base of learning to play, eventually you come up with your own playstyle.

and when in doubt, use ConRO addon for that nice circle around the action bar for what skills to use.

Exile’s Reach is a good idea but I think it wasn’t implemented very well.
It’s too short. It doesn’t cover enough of how the game works.

If you’re trying to get your girlfriend to play the game with you, let her choose what race and class she wants to play.
Don’t bother yourself with the optimal build and synergy or reading guides and what not.

Simply let her create what she likes, and take it from there.
If she’s completely new to the game, the leveling experience will be slow regardless.
Don’t put her through chromie time either, just play normally

Recently irl friend started playing with us, just think how to make it more interesting for her. Fly her around the zones, show toys, go to different dungeons/raids, “boost” her in TW dungeons playing druid tank level 10 or arcane mage level 10, or holy priest spamming holy nova. Just make it fun for her… show the professions.
We play low level m+ with friend now (he plays one month only), awakened LFR, heroic dungeons

I started myself in SL and liked it a lot

she is completely new, but its not slow at all xD
but yea i literally did what you said an also i tell her what to ignore (what spells and what interface parts ahe can ignore).
I think she want to work throu it but its no a warm welcome at all

Rather than exile’s reach being too bad… I’d say the rest of the game is. You cannot throw too much at the start of the game. They either:

  • Won’t remember
  • Won’t read as they want to see if they’d like the early game
  • Can get overwhelmed and lead to the 2 above
  • They’ll get some but not enough info

Soo what you want to do is slowly introduce mechanics and give people a way to test them as soon as possible. How do we teach that to new players? Well we’re already getting linear leveling through the forced BFA(And soon dragonflight) to new players. Make this experience teach them the basics of class mechanics, enemy mechanics, questing, you name it. Through this linear first time experience you can have them not only have the same thing, they’ll be together.

No. Do not boost. As easy as it is, leveling is a great tutorial. You have to understand that people who have less of an experience than you in playing the game will only be overwhelmed and not learn anything this way. Encourage her to make something she likes, encourage her to ask questions and do not force unsolicited help. Just play together, don’t backseat, I’m sure she’ll appreciate it.

i think you misunderstood. The boost is just for the evoker unlock

Evokers don’t work the way death knights did. On new accounts they give you a warning that it’s a new class with different mechanics, also you’ll be going right into level 58 content.

(Source: What I saw in beta a year ago and someone saying it recently as well. If I’m wrong, I apologise but that’s how it was back then.)

Regardless, it’s still a fair warning, she’ll be thrown into content that is level 58. She’ll barely have time to acquaint herself with the mechanics.

Yes you can. Just press “back” and the “select realm”.

I wish each class had a trainer with a training area. Monks do have something like this with daily quests that show you how to use some abilities.

I forget how to play some alts that have been idle for a while. I wish I could go to an area and have a refresher.

Every new spell should be taught through this feature. I know it might be a pain to have to visit this place so often (maybe make it every 5 or 10 levels) but it would be useful in learning a new spec or class.

In BFA I got quests to go back with level thresholds, like reaching 30, 50, 80, etc., is it not like this anymore? If I remember correctly these quests still exist but give rested experience.

didn‘t work for me. Maybe it was a bug

What happened when you clicked ‘‘back’’?

I tried to get some of my friends to play wow pvp with me and after configuring the game for them (addons macros in the hope that it will make the game easier for them) they quit after a month.

PVP is unplayable for most people at the moment.

If there is anyone at Blizzard reading this

We need a big change !
