It started doing it recently while logging out of a character or into or out of an instance. It just hangs and I need to kill it.
Give the scan & repair a try to see if that may fix it. But also try moving your addon folder to another place on your computer and load up the client again.
It could be a possible addon causing a conflict with the main game files.

I know its the standard answer but.
Disable and one by one enable addons. They are loaded when entering the world and can lead to crashes or freezes. As soon as it happens again you know which one is at fault.
You could try to rename the cache and wtf folders in your wow installation, which will reset all your settings and maybe fix it.
Have that since 2 weeks before expansion, tried it all, scans, repairs, clean installs, nothing works.
Only thing that gets me to and past char screen is having game in very small window.
