My PC’s GPU needs to go off to the manufacturer for testing and repair and knowing manufacturer warranties, I probably won’t get it back for at least 4 weeks.
So I can continue to raid over the next month, I thought I would install wow on my Macbook Pro, which on face value, should be able to run classic. Its 1.5GB graphics card is a lot more powerful than what I had to play wow on 15 years ago!!
However, it looks TERRIBLE. The text and menus are all in decent definition but the game itself looks like I’m playing on a Gameboy Advance!
The resolution box is greyed out though so I’m not able to change it.
Do you have any tips for getting decent performance out of a Macbook?
Yes, sell it and buy a PC.
Jokes aside, keep in mind that “wow classic” is not “wow vanilla”, it still uses essentially the same BfA client that retail uses, just with different maps, and skins, and a different server.
Blizzard and apple had a fallout over Metal, as such wow no longer works perfectly on macs.
If you can somehow make your Mac work on OpenGL there might be hope?
Yeah that kinda makes sense.
I don’t have any wish to play on this Mac but the
manufacturer takes up to 28 days to repair or replace my GPU and until then, it’s Mac or nothing
Little bit of misinformation going on in this thread here, so I thought I’ll weigh in and provide some actual data.
First things first: OpenGL is likely a non-starter, mainly because the current version of MacOS only supports an OpenGL version that is nearly a decade old. The shift to the newer Metal video API was all but universal within the operating system, so that is also what WoW Classic has to run on in order to be actually compatible with recent versions of MacOS.
Without getting into the age-old Mac versus Windows debate: Metal does have pretty substantial hardware requirements, which is why its
a.) mainly featured in more recent Macs and
b.) will not really work below having at least 1GB of dedicated video memory (VRAM) available.
This is reflected in the official minimum requirements for WoW Classic, which can be found here - if the hardware in the MacBook can meet those limits it should run the game at a reasonable level of quality, but it is also true that using the exact same hardware in a Windows-based PC (using DirectX) would likely yield somewhat higher performance.
