WoW`s lore - main quests?

I played this game for 10+ years but never cared about its lore cuz Im Star Wars fan and I havent time for both worlds.

Now I want to level up a new character 1 to 120 and experience the main storyline of the game. I dont want to waste time with doing side-quests like “Find my wife” , etc. Is there a way or addon which will show me the MAIN story quests? I think the “!” in the previous expansions was different color for main and side quests.

Mankrik’s Wife is very important part of the story!

I am not aware of any such an addon and it would be very tedious to do from what I know. Author would need to go through all the quests in the game multiple times to see if they are necessary parts of the story or not. As for different color of “!”, orange just marks the very important ones that are the main storyline of the expansion but these are usualy only at max level for that expansion.

On top of that one could argue that leveling contains very little of the main story actualy. You mostly do just local stories of specific zones.

It is doable from MoP onwards really (and you will most likely outlevel the expansions by a long shot before you finish the zones) Wrath is sort of doable though the story is a bit jumbled and you will not really get many of the references without playing WC3 (Though admittedly if you are actually interested in the Lore I highly recommend playing it not just for the Wrath story) . Just ignore the existance of TBC when it comes to lore cause it was a hot mess and almost all of it has been retconned at this point.

Cata is sort of difficult because it is a very split expansion, the individual zones make sense but few of them actually connect. On alliance side id suggest Westfall, then a lot of do whatever you want and then searing gorge and Badlands since those zones lay some groundwork for later on.
On Horde side I suggest Silverpine, hillsbarad and Stonetalon mountains, just to get an impression of who Garrosh was before MoP, and then also searing Gorge and Badlands.

Fair warning though the in game story telling is really weak until you reach MoP, then it starts to make sense if you just read quest texts and listen to NPCs and then from Legion onward it is actually quite strong for an MMO (That is just purely how easy it is to follow along, how good it is, is obviously a matter of taste)

  1. Each expansion has their own isolated story, WoW dont have storyline which going through all expansion.
  2. Leveling zone mostly unrelated to story of the expansion, most of the story placed at start of expansion and in raids at max level, all betwen it has practicaly zero value.
  3. You cant do only main qwest, in order to progres you need to do all qwest in qwest hub, only after this you can take qwest which lead you to another qwest hub.
