WoW Theme Deterioration

Is it just me, but looking at the wotlk loading screen and all that, did the art just get worse? I remember thinking back in the day that sure, wow was a game after all but slightly towards the darker side, why did it turn into disney cartoon? The vast vast majority of players are men ages 20+, do we really want a disney cartoon? It cant be that hard creating interesting stories, theme, art, take inspiration from the old days.

Try to imagine the wotlk loading screen with Arthas sitting on his chair all sinister like, where the hell did all that go. Very sad.

I mean the last really decent theme was probably legion. Shadowlands felt like some kids imagination of a poorly designed hell, where the big evil, is actually just some random robot dude.

Sire denathrius could become more badass than arthas, if he becomes the leader of the Nathrezim re-uniting the burning legion…

Dragonflight’s theme is a little light-hearted, but we are one step away of having something extremely badass happen in the story

Naturally its someone called “Immortalx” asking for more edgy loading screens

The art looks fine to me, no problem having more light hearted and colourful loading screens as thats what Dragonflight is supposed to be. It was the same for MoP.

Would say its about time they updated some of the old ones though. Where half the people on the screen are dead or no longer leading their people anymore.

If u remember, MoP didnt go over well with 90% of the community for that reason alone and pandas. I mean if we want WoW to thrive, it should appeal to most people. So far 2 lighthearted expansion themes, that didnt actually resonate with players and thats just a fact even if some people enjoy it.

No, it was early BFA, when there was a real faction conflict - Sylvanas burning the tree, and Jaina going full terminator about it.

Too bad mid-expansion they somehow made Jaina forget about the genocide and be friends with Thrall, Baine & everyone again. Zzzzz.

I remember when BFA was announced, I really loved this video, it promised so much - and didn’t deliver later:

Considering how art direction is perhaps the only almost universally praised aspect of WoW (with the exception of specific zones such as Korthia, which doesn’t seem to have many fans) that people keep raving about, I’m afraid you might be in the minority here. Most men aged 20+ I know are huge fans of the game’s art.

Also, I remember WoW always being cartoonish and campy af.

Wrath was when the more colorful sets from Vanilla and TBC were succeeded by the much darker and gloomy items.

I think that WoW’s art shines best when it is bright and colorful regardless of if it is the color of happiness or violence.

You might want to check your facts on that one.

as time progressed censorships got harsher.

you can’t get away with saying or showing a lot of things you could 20 years ago without raising lawsuits and red flags with the players, while still maintaining the same age rating.

sad times that censorship is winning.

You know… As I told Blizzard a few times already… They could just simply RAISE the age rating of the game and go back to those themes.

Overwatch is also a stylized game and in my country it is USK 16 ( T-rated for US labeling)

TBH I don’t really worry about what the loading screen looks like, given it’s not something that particularly impacts how I play.

However we are very much moving into a more regulated world, given some of the terrors that we read about occurring on the internet. It’s to be expected that governments are taking an interest in content online.

Remember how companies tried to get away with lootboxes, and then a few EU govts took an interest, well content in media was pushing the envelope of the respective rating and now this is also getting looked into in the same way.

World of Warcraft has indeed over time gotten softer angles and brighter lighting, and many of the things that used to be core to it like excessively exaggerated muscle and comically large weapons and busty ladies… well, that’s all gone. It does appear from time to time but this is mostly related to old content.

I don’t really like that, I think those things were very unique and charming qualities that made Warcraft something special among the sea of other fantasy worlds.

And then there’s the theming. I mean let’s just say that a scenario from Warcraft 2 was put into Dragonflight and everybody lost their minds.

There are so many loading screens.

Ironic for a game that set out to have a cohesive open world with as little time spent on loading screens as possible.

And yet here you are giving evil Blizzard money just to post on their forum

Talk about winning

Violent tv series and movies are massively on the rise compared to 20 years ago, we can show much more graphic violence today.

Massive creative companies are much more willing to appeal to adult audiences now, it just has to be in good taste.

Perhaps edgelords just aren’t the main consumers of videogames anymore.

I would argue videogames give easier access to voice displeasure than t.v shows.

in most games if you want to complain something is not tasteful it is just a click away (in multiplayer games)

however in movies or t.v shows there is a usually a whole process of petitions or number of complaints going through the broadcasting regulators, that most sane people would not even bother even if they didn’t like it.

Yeah, it is.

It’s also much easier because videogames are constantly ongoing and you can’t really change a tv show once it’s out.

Yeah but pretty much every violent tv show that has come out in the past few years has been picked up by massive networks and are continuing, the market for them is there.

If something is massively disliked because of the topics that were discussed in it, it’s usually because the way it was done was horrible.

Yeah it’s probably not so much series or movies, but more so live t.v programs which get hit by the most complaints.
