New Allied Race: High Elf. In the wake of Dalaran’s destruction, Vereesa Windrunner leads the exiled High Elves home to Quel’thalas. There, they re-unite with the Void Elves, Blood Elves, and San’layn. As protectors of Silvermoon and its Sunwell, these High Elves become available to players as a neutral Allied Race.
New Region: Quel’thalas.
Eversong Woods. As the Void bears down on Azeroth, its champions journey to the fabled lands of the elves, where the Sunwell has come under attack. Explore lush forests, lavish pavillions and secluded villages, with the sprawling city of Silvermoon in its midst.
Zul’Aman. Venture into the thick forests of the east, with previously unseen lands awaiting to be discovered. Uncover ancient legends, stop a war between ancient enemies before all is lost, and witness the re-awakening of Zul’jin, hero of the Forest Trolls.
Northeron. Journey beyond the city of Stratholme and into the northernmost regions of Lordaeron, hitherto locked away behind the mountains, and witness the rise of the Scarlet Empire. Who is their mysterious benefactor from across the sea, and what will be their role in the war against the Shadow?
Eastweald. Now that all remnants of the Plague have been purged from the eastern regions of Lordaeron, people have moved back in. Towns and villages are bustling with life and trade again, providing pivotal links between Silvermoon and the lands to the south, and places of rest for weary travellers. But as it turns out, the rot of death does not so easily give way to life. Uncover an ancient curse and dark rites in the dead of night as you help bring these people peace.
New Feature: Player Housing. Settle in one of the many locations available within Quel’thalas. Do you prefer snowy peaks or cosy hamlets secluded by forests and lakes? The choice is yours in World of Warcraft: Midnight!
Additional Hero Talents. Every class is able to unlock a new Hero Talent tree by completing the campaign of Midnight. Become hard as rock as a tanking Shaman, or wield one-handed crossbows as a Rogue. The choice is yours!
Offering major features that capture people’s attention leading up to the expansion.
Providing content that can be enjoyed by as many people as possible when it makes sense (less work, too). Hence the Earthen race, for example.
The whole “uniting the scattered tribes of elves” bit from BlizzCon is likely going to be important.
A High Elf race would let them distinguish Void Elves and Blood Elves further, without having to homogenise them further in order to appeal to players requesting cosmetic options.
Blood Elves could lean more into their vain nature (jewelry and such) but also be depicted as tough survivors, hardened by their past with Fel magic, the Scourge, etc. City-dwellers, a bit suspicious of their neighbours, etc.
Void Elves could follow more in the footsteps of Alleria, with additional Voidy options, feeling more like Shadow Hunters.
High Elves, meanwhile, could be more about the traditional High Elven themes. Light, Arcane magic, and stalking the lush green forests of Azeroth.
The best option, however, would be if Midnight overhauled the Allied Race system and simply brought all types of Quel’dorei under one roof. So players would simply pick Quel’dorei or High Elf on the character creation screen, and then see different sub-types available to Horde or Alliance, or both. Same with Dwarves, Orcs, Humans, Trolls, etc.
I am actually curious, why do so many people want high elves as a “main selling point” ? Wouldn’t it literally be blood elves with some different hair styles?
I think allied races are cool for mid expansion “add-ons” as it feels like a freebie… Legion was nice we got a new class, and ontop we got 4 new allied races… Void elves started off cool imo, but has now become mundane with the ability to have the same skin colour as blood elves…
I run around and I think “Oh cool blood elf mage!” and hover over to realize its a void elf…
There are so many cool races in game that would be so much more refreshing, that I feel adding High elves would be a lazy addition.
So why the big want for it? What does the high elf give you (apart from lore) that the belf does not give you already? (From an appearence perspective)
OMG another topic about how badly they want the High Elves, having them available from the very beginning on the Horde side. First they rejected them, and now there’s a lot of crying because they don’t have a blue background. You have been given the opportunity to look like your desired elves in the case of Void Elves. This is your option. Just keep your fingers crossed that you don’t do anything to them, because they will also leave you.
If they release another race I’ll be very unhappy but will do nothing about it ofc, let alone another Elf race.
I can’t see player housing returning and if it were to return then it should be an instanced map which isn’t tied to a specific regional story/patch/expansion.
I agree that there are lots of potential fresh races they could add. Personally, I’d love Vrykul, Haranir, Half-Elves, or Forest Trolls.
I think the popularity of High Elves stems from different desires players have, for example:
Some (like me) are just old Warcraft RTS players and fantasy enjoyers, and still consider High Elves to be an Alliance pillar. “Pure” High Elves without any taint of Fel magic, Shadow magic, or being affiliated with the Horde. Just good old wood elven rangers, in the style of Lord of the Rings Mirkwood elves. Humans, Dwarves, and Elves. It’s the iconic trio.
Some want to be able to look like classic High Elves without any downsides, like green eyes or voidy hair or whatever.
Some want the whole package of a complete Allied Race. A fitting mount, heritage armour set, racial abilities, and starting zone. Not a mix of different sub-cultures.
Blood elves are High Elves. By introducing high elves they would just make blood elf players, especially mages, feel bad. Blood elves are literally the same people as High Elves, and they only renamed themselves after the scourge nearly wiped them out. Their fel corruption has been gone long ago story-wise. It you really insist on being arcane-adapted, then we have Nightborne (arcane elves) and Void Elves. Alternatively you can also play as a Night Elf and imagine in your head that you’re from the old Kaldorei empire.
But… As others have mentioned, aren’t this already a customization option for void elves? And blood elves could look super similar apart from maybe the eyes?
So it would essentially be Ctrl C + Ctrl V of the Void Elves in a different starting zone?
And what, after lvl 10 they would roam around the “normal world” like the rest of us, their Capital City would be like every other race apart from Human and Orc, empty apart from a few RP’ers going there from time to time?
I don’t really see the game breaking argument as to why we should have a completely new race around this, when:
Stuff like this is also in the mix?
You want High Elves to be the center point of Midnight… I would personally feel it was a super weak selling point, given the points mentioned above. Would feel so lazy from the Devs
You’re not wrong, but the same could be said for almost every Allied Race (and sometimes we have seen players get upset by newer additions, such as LF Draenei and Earthen).
What Allied Races are about is offering a new flavour of something, with less effort required for development. I think that’s a nice thing to have. Give me all the sub-Orcs and half-Trolls, I don’t mind.
There’s definitely enough you could do to make High Elves stand apart from Void and Blood Elves, too.
Give them a cool silvery armour set and weapons. Perhaps a mount based on the Unicorn. Or go in the direction of earthy colours, like green and brown. It depends a bit, if you want High Elves to feel more like survivors in the wilds, exiles, and rangers, of if you want them to be more like the Silver Covenant spellcasters of Dalaran, dressed in silver and white.
Restrict them from being Demon Hunters but perhaps give them the Shaman class since many of them lived alongside the Wildhammer Dwarves.
Offer unique tattoos and war paint for each Quel’dorei sub-race, to distinguish them further. Void Elves could have ones like what Alleria has in TWW, while High Elves could have the ones she used to have. Blood Elves might have some beautiful Arcane runes or something.
Racial abilities wouldn’t be based around stealing mana and such, but perhaps more to do with being rangers of the forest, combined a little bit with spellcasting and the arcane. Maybe something to do with the Light? At least one of them should pay homage to their former status of being exiles and survivors, forcing them to survive in the wilds. Perhaps a cool enchanted campfire, or being able to conjure some playful arcane spirit from the trees?
