There were a whole host of spin off addon managers when curseforge was first taken over by Overwolf but I have no idea if any of them are still working as I donāt use any of them.
Iāve been using Curseforge for a long time and not had any issues. You do have to go in and deny it access to everything and stop it running in the background etc. I just run it once a day to get my updates and close it again.
The ad it runs is just one on the right hand side, there is a subscription model for those that donāt want to see that. I donāt think itās worth it personally.
I just couldnāt cope with having to do all my addons manually
This was the old list of alternatives back when Overwolf first came in:-
you can right click on the addon name and swap providers
from curse to er wago/wowinterface i think it was
but if you try to switch again from wow to wago
what is this error message suppose to mean?
dbm was updated yet still doesnt work in lfr and on world bosses
CurseForge being unable to properly migrate for months now, they gave the last date to be the 9th of may (yesterday). For days their API has been giving errors and incorrect information again, so if youāve seen any errors the past days, missing addons etc coming from WowUp, thatās why. Their own app was affected by it as well.
That said, afaik they had to postpone their migration to the new CurseForge API again for some reason, so you can still access Curse addons in WowUp for now.
For addons that are only on Curse, you can try to contact the authors and ask them to upload it to Wago if monetization is important. Alternatives are:
WowUpHub (works similar to Wago but less features)
WowInterface, not ideal as thereās no proper API, but āInstall from URLā in WowUp works for this
In case addon devs do not know yet; thereās a tool they can use to automate deploying their addon to multiple providers: https://github.com/BigWigsMods/packager
Wago pays addon devs as well, hence itās an alternative to Curse if monetization is desired.
The Curse API is giving seemingly random API responses and is rather inconsistent about it. This goes for both their old and new API. Earlier today I even had an issue where Details alpha was detected twice with a different hash, meaning that both V1 and V2 of their own API was giving inconsistent results for what version I have installed
Even if you do, youād have to receive an API key from CurseForge/Overwolf, which still means you donāt have full access to their addons because authors can disable 3rd party access. This is because CurseForge refuses to monetize these downloads.
Yea but overwolf do for sure have requirements for those how want to use their platform. Maybe that they only allow them to share it on their platform?
Overwolf is trying to create a monopoly, which is actively hurting the community as thereās a large portion of players that doesnāt want to install Overwolf software ever.
The CurseForge app will most likely never be able to provide ElvUI and TukUI for example, meaning that users will always have to install something else for those addons.
But even if they have that requirement, big addons like DBM and Plater are already on wago.
Yea it isnāt that good for the community! But that how the business world work neither we like it or not.
Best thing that could happened is that blizzard cutdown on allowed addons (3rd party) and design all the features into the base game!
Haha thatās true. But I walk outside and maybe if the sun is out I enjoy it for a bit then I want to return inside and game humans spent thousands of year to build better environments and finally we have maximum comfort inside unlimited food, water, internet. Canāt be better m8 I will enjoy all the ancestors hard work! xD
Once I started having issues with WoWUp, I finally caved in an tried CurseForge⦠and god is it awful.
It booted up and detected 5 version of WoW, which it gave amazing names like Retail 1, Retail 2, Retail 3 etc. So I have no clue which one is actually the correct one and I had to guess based on the detected addons. Once I made the guess, it didnāt seem to actually detect any available updates, which is wrong since several addons ingame were giving me an āout of dateā message. After some fiddling it finally found some available updated so I click āupdate allā, it did itās thing, except it didnāt actually update a single addon.
Whoever is in charge of taking over CurseForge, I hope they burn in hell. Managing addons was perfectly fine before you showed up.
Addons arenāt a business nor should they be. Overwolf is trying to make money of it.
Absolutely not. Thereās no way Blizzard can maintain the work of hundreds of addon devs themselves. It will greatly hurt accessibility if they were to do this.
Everything is business! I mean companies are selling water!
We donāt need all the addons! Look at FFXIV. They should cutoff many addons since the game is becoming automatic soon. They even have to design fight with addons in mind āIon said in a interviewā!
