Hi there,
I’ve been trying to grind in ZF as a hunter, but while some of the mobs (the zombies) give 1400 xp, some of them give as little as 40, or even 4 and 2 xp per mob, pretty much wasting my time. How is XP gain related to using feign death, or switching of targets from me to my pet?

Some mobs give little xp and I think Zul’Farrak had bunch of those very weak zombies which give very little, if any, XP. If the living trolls etc. give normal amount of XP I would assume it is working as intended.
But its the same unit - zul farrak zombie. If I kill it normally, 1400 xp. If I try to get a bunch at the same time with feign death and traps, 40-400 xp
Heya Stormsong!
There’s no known issues with the XP yield from these mobs in ZF at the moment, so it could possibly be by design!
Of course, just because there aren’t any known issues, doesn’t mean it’s issue free, and we always love getting bug reports from our players to help make WoW a better place!

Hello fortinbraha, thanks for the reply. Do you know how feign death while a pet is up affects xp gain? Or if time-in-combat is a factor?
You kill them, they die, you get XP, as long as you hit them once you are getting the right XP. Why would doing a skill affect XP?
I’m guessing it possibly counts as a Pet-kill rather than Player-kill, and thus weakens the exp?
Perhaps by design, so people can’t AFK farm if they are a pet class.
This was “fixed” some expansions ago, as you used to be able to let your pet do everything and still reap the rewards after.
Might be a remenant from this design that causes the system to panic in some way?
I’m just speculating, not saying this is what is happening.
Bugs happen a lot, and/or weird game design that we question daily after having learned about it (Pvp dmg scaling).
I’d continue to try fail-check this, see if it happens consistently on the exact same mob if you perform the exact same action.
Example; Go inside, Kill the group in the start (3 mobs), see what EXP they give if you feign death, and see what they give without.
If you can produce a re-occuring result, perhaps with screenshots, it can be addressed better.
Pet kill is 0 xp for player, not lowered.

4 xp cannot be the right amount for a level 43 mob, especially when I killed one just after that gave 1400. I don’t know why skills would affect it, but clearly something is wrong.

The pet deals next to no damage though, so I doubt that is it. I can keep trying, but the run takes quite a lot of time and it feels wasted when you get like 1/10th total of what you’re supposed to. I seem to have it narrowed down to either loss of aggro (feign death), resisted feign deaths, time in combat, or traps somehow not counting as player-damage.

But the pet didn’t kill them.
Some mobs aren’t elite and have low HP, that could be part of it and I can say 100% it’s not a skill you are using that reduces it. If a pet kills on it’s own you get no XP.
Some mobs are just weak version and give little to no exp, tiger matron for example as elite would give 3k exp, but her offspring which is yellow and have 20hp won’t give any. I believe something like that was introduced in Pandaria when those minor monsters started to appear.
I know, but these are the same types of mobs - the standard Zul’Farrak zombie

Some zombies are elite some aren’t.
Not in Classic - the Fallen Heroes, or whatever they’re called, are non-elite
