Since it’s my irl ooc birthday today, I was curious: does your roleplay character have an IC birthday? How did you determine what day it would be? Do they do anything to celebrate it?
For Rhaethas, I decided he was a Scorpio first after a suggestion from a friend to consider the characters zodiac first. Scorpio felt fitting for him and his twin sisters personalities based on astrology. I then decided out of the dates that could be Scorpio, October 27th seemed the nicest!
While he doesn’t celebrate his birthday IC, I commed a cute piece of art for it:
Don’t think a single one of my characters have had a IC Birthday because they have never warranted having one, usually they last around 4-5 maybe even 8 months if they are fun to play as, but since I keep rotating out characters as they become stale or unfun to play as, they usually never stay around long enough to need a IC birthday.
As the one who has suggested that, can totally recommend this method xD I usually set it for every character who has more or less defined personality, even if they don’t celebrate it (most of my characters don’t), in case the topic arises in rp (+ I like assigning various personality systems to my characters, as “character development exercise”). If I can’t assign exact zodiac behaviour stereotypes, I usually go for which element/planet would fit them the best and choose from zodiacs corresponding to these.
The only developed character I have who doesn’t have assigned birthday is my dracthyr - mostly because she wouldn’t remember that anyway, due to their amnesia and with how they were created artificially, I am not sure if they’d even have that concept.
For Daerron here, I’ve set his birthday 29th May (so Gemini), because he has twin sister and I thought that setting twin sign for them would be very ironic + Mercury fits both trader and alchemist. For exact day I’ve trusted the fate to do so (I’ve rolled for the day xD)
His children were born 13th December (so Sagittarius), because that’s when they’d be born. While they are still very young and it is hard to say how that sign would fit them, it has given me a few ideas for their possible development!
Mine’s kind of boring; I checked the creation date of my character (either using the folder if the character doesn’t predate my current installation of WoW, or searching for mentions of their name on Gyazo or guild Discords) and decided that was their birthday.
Date of creation = date of birth. IDK it just seems fitting LMAO
Well you could say that creation date is birth date, especially since you have to level the character and stuff if you want to use them in content. You could consider leveling up a growing-up process.
For simplicity, I made Lintian’s IC birthday the same as mine, and I track her age in real time. She has always been exactly 480 years older than me (483 since Dragonflight because of the timeskip). However, she has only celebrated it once in RP, receiving a mage staff from her teacher as a gift.
For my FFXIV characters, their IC birthdays are their in-game birthdays, which I picked by rolling dice. I don’t believe in astrology and so don’t attach any symbolic significance to these dates.
And here I am, sitting in disbelief that you’d call it boring…!
…because that’s how I’ve decided Dustara’s birthday
I made her on PTR back in November 17th, 2019, and so November 17th has become her birthday. She gains a year per irl years, for damned be Blizzard’s timey-wimey bullcrap…
The mention of zodiacs was a fun one, though, and I definitely see a Scorpio in Dustara!
Blondie has amnesia about her former (alive) self, and never recovered her memory. Being a walking corpse is all she knows by now.
So basically her “birthday” started after she crawled out of the shallow grave she got dumped in, faced down.
Like all births it’s been a completely confusing and traumatic event, however since it’s still fresh in her memory she clearly doesn’t feel like celebrating it.
I try to keep easy to remember dates for my characters birthdays (if I bother to give them one).
I gave my Druid 31st of October (Halloween seemed fitting)
21st of June for my Rogue (Midsummer baby)
6th of June for my Warlock (6/6… you know the rest)
21st of April for my Hunter (Spring equinox, animals come out of hiding)
21st of December for my Paladin (Winter Solstice - darkest before dawn and all that)
Thank you each of you for the well wishes! Thanks to my guild it was one of the best birthdays ever! I had a blast!
I give you my heartiest thanks for suggesting it to me, it was such a good idea! I also like the concept of picking from element/planet too, it feels super fitting for shaman characters in particular. You’ve reminded me that each zodiac has a corresponding tarot card to it, it makes me feel like that could be a good way of choosing, whichever signs connected tarot fits best!
Honestly I don’t consider that particularly boring, I think it is a neat way of doing it that I’ll probably consider doing for one of my own characters sometime. I think it’s a good way of putting more OOC meaning to the anniversary of characters, especially with what others said further in the thread about using the day they started roleplaying the character.
I think this is a very clever tactic! And clearly worked since you still remember their birthday a lifetime later haha.
I love how much meaning you put into each of the dates, it helps give a lot of development to the characters and it’s a really cute concept. This is one of my favourite methods mentioned in the thread so far!
I always pick dates that are easy, for me, to remember (and means i have less of an excuse to miss them…)
So Gora Wildaxe, has her birthday on the 1st of May.
Aenon Redleaf has his birthday on the 23rd of January
Ulcaster the Forsaken has his birthday on 31st of August
and finally, Khyrnon Oldpride the surly Dark Iron has his birthday on 6th of Dec
