Something I love doing for my characters is assigning them a pet. I think it’s a really good hook for walk-up roleplay, I remember having an old character with a pet bunny, and people in Stormwind would always come up to comment on it! So I was wondering, does your character have a pet? How did they get it? Did it happen naturally through rp? Was it planned? And for extra curiosity, how does your IC pet compare to your OOC pet?
Rhaethas is one of few who did not have a pet, or at least I ret-conned it quietly since I reworked his feelings about birds and had him give it to another player. However a few days ago a good friend gifted me a pet for my irl birthday, and I’ve been including it in rp as Rhaethas ever since. It is a little baby fox called Kim’ren, which is Thalassian for “Little Void”. I thought it fitting since the fox has black fur! Other than that, a notable trait about Rhaethas is he adores cats (or cute things in general), so he has been fostering another players cat called Artemis. Meanwhile, OOC, I’m much more of a dog person, with three pet dogs and two pet snails.
My priestess of the moon, Alyna, has a saber, Alsha, and a sentinel owl, Ynthila. Both ‘pets’/companions seem very essential to the archetype as a whole to me, so I started her off with both. In character, she found her Saber together with her mentor a short time after the Battle for Mount Hyjal, in Ashenvale, seemingly orphaned, and the two bonded pretty swiftly. Both have a fair amount of utility in RP as well, although it’s mostly the saber, Alsha, that gets to shine and partake. Shooting arrows while standing? Boo, hiss. Shooting them while in the saddle of your saber? The real deal. I play them less as pets and more as trusted companions.

Adelais, meanwhile, I also started off with a pet - Meline, the mana-kitten (who never quite seems to age?). I usually RP Meline as accompanying her most places - they’re very fond of one another! She just kind of went and bought Meline as a kitten, like you’d get your own pet cat. I imagine Meline helps her out when she’s researching things, fetching (and hopefully not ruining…) scrolls and the likes - I use the in-game pet for her, and that one has scrolls stuck to its back, so it’s a convenient explanation for that. All of the random arcane teleporting/blinking around the place is something I have the cat do in character as well, in sporadic bursts of sudden energy. You thought zoomies were bad? Magic zoomies are worse, but she’s the star of the show, really.

I don’t have a pet right now (I live on my own and I’m away from home too much and too irregularly, frankly), but I’ve always been a cat person, and I think that shows!

Cro has her hunting companion Savannah, a giant lightning worg who just follows her around, she doesn’t claim to actively own her.
Erybdis (My nightborne hunter) has Magia, an arcane infused turtle that she has had for thousands of years. Being under the dome warped the turtle.
My undead warlock has a fel infused cat called Yi, he didn’t infuse the cat with fel, somebody dumped the animal on him. Yi hunts the rats in my warlock’s lab and their relationship is as my warlock describes it; “a working one” but if you catch him on his own with the cat, he is really affectionate with him.
I am more a cat person IRL as some of the forum regulars can tell you.
To answer the thread’s question, I usually try to get a fitting pet and/or mount for my characters and involve them in rp as well. If I do that, they often become a vital part of their character - or at the very least an excuse for approaching others, especially if the character is more on introverted side.
Daerron, however, doesn’t have any pets or mounts unless children count, but he has a sentient cloak, which he bought in one of Dalaran shops times ago and considers to get a dragonhawk when he sorts out his “family estate matters”, to fit in with his coat of arms (https://www.argentarchives.org/node/269728)
My other active rp character, dracthyr, has a mechanical pandaren serpent (https://www.wowhead.com/npc=64899/mechanical-pandaren-dragonling) she bought in Dalaran time ago and she was gifted a few other mechancial things (https://www.wowhead.com/npc=117340/dibbler and https://www.wowhead.com/npc=55367/darkmoon-zeppelin) While it is still a thing to develop, she is going to eventually learn engineering to maintain these pets and some other things!
My mage has a cat familiar called Erimond who is notorious for being a little bastard and a thief. Not a day goes by where he doesn’t attempt some manner of mischief. If you told my mage that her cat is actually an imp in disguise, she wouldn’t be surprised at all.
