After Dragonflight, I think I give this position to Alexstrasza, which is a shame considering where the characters started all these years ago.
I just found they wrote her so badly, and was reduced to some naïve socker mum, instead of the immortal powerful dragon queen that has seen countless battles and survived some pretty dark and traumatic events. Post Legion mount quest it was pretty cool for us DKs, she actually had a much more aggressive stance towards us. Now it was all forgotten and forgiven for plot convenience.
Mind you, Nozdormu was a close second. He went from stoically mysterious, full of knowledge and understandably distant, to some sort of fool who doesn’t even understand how his own powers work! Might have a bit of recency bias but can’t think of anyone that has annoyed me more besides…
ThE jAiLeR I just had to de-canonise him in my head in order to keep enjoying the game, otherwise everything falls apart for me.
Calia Menethil and Blizzard’s insistence on inserting her into the Horde and Undercity. She is not forsaken, she has no place being there. Despite it being an unpopular move they continued to shoe horn her in.
A very interesting choice! I have to admit I haven’t made up my mind about her. I can see there being some story telling potential that can be expressed through her, we can explore a different aspect of Lordaeron’s people, their struggles, faith, identity etc. Her position on the desolate council is not earned for me, which leads to two scenarios I can think.
A: They will continue to show the struggle and discord amongst the council members and Forsaken.
B: She will continue being written as this goodie two-shoes, that desperately wants to be accepted by the forsaken, making her a very uninteresting character.
Though being pessimistic about past writing, I think she’s going to be used as some sort of martyr/saint and they’re going to try and make more light risen undead or whatever they’re called. Especially after the Priory of the Sacred flame…
From Shadowlands onwards to S1 of TWW (and it breaks my heart to say it) I’d have to say Anduin.
He went from complete holy badass at the start of BFA (“STAND AS ONE!! FOR THE ALLIANCE!!!”) to a mewling little lion cub that makes me want to log off every time I see his self-pity.
Mmmh… I didn’t feel this way in the earlier years of WoW, but: Sylvanas.
I think she’s been given WAY too much attention at the expense of way more interesting characters. She’s been completely and utterly ruined for me personally.
Oh absolutely, so far Voss gets top marks. Characters like her are very successful because they manage to be both an independent character but also reflect the story of the people they come from. Like you say, she’s a Forsaken, her story is a Forsaken story.
She was a bit dull in the retaking of Gilneas, but that was the whole thing, badly written imo.
Yes quite so, I’m afraid to say that SL damaged many things, Anduin is one of them. Though I’m a little more optimistic for him, I reckon they’ll fix him.
Yes I thought I’d see this one mentioned hehe. In Sylvanas’ case, I really wonder at which point of the lore did they come up with the concept of the Jailer and him being behind all the world’s problems somehow. I reckon that’s the point where quite understandably yourself and many others started having enough of her. She was decent all the way to Cata for me. The book fleshed her out better sure, especially her past, but the damage of including the Jailer is done.
Although, maybe in the grand scheme of things, I should have answered Velen.
I have never liked him and always found him to be completely boring. But, I’m sure that opinion is influenced by the fact that I just don’t like draenei in general. They are the only race that I actively would like to see removed from the game.
They are definitely an odd race for me. I like aspects of them, maybe because I like the Protoss from Starcraft, but they always felt like the odd one out to the overall universe. They’re a bit too alien and sci-fi like in contrast to the rest of the game. I think I like them as part of the broader Legion lore though. Now as for Velen’s gifts… What always sounded odd to me was how quickly KJ and Archimond followed Sargeras when they know they’re 3rd leader buddy has literally the gift of foresight…
Sylvanas
The , hands down, worse thing that happened with WoW
I would even dare to say the creation of the Jailor and the whole SL mess was because Mr self insert wanted to put her girl in the spotlight, so Sylvanas’ “fault” too
But even without that she is just overal a horrible character with 0 sense
I am aware that they have since retconned the Purge of Dalaran but it was utterly reprehensible to me, especially as someone who started playing due to how deeply the plight of the Blood Elves resonated with me.
It’s a real shame that the development team lack the stones to hold her accountable for the same style of atrocities that the likes of Garrosh were rightly criticised for - the torture and murder of civilians.
Admittedly I do not particularly like any of the Windrunner sisters and consider all three of them to be poorly written for various reasons, with Alleria being the most tolerable at this point. Sadly Blizzard have long struggled with the concept of holding women accountable for atrocities, as we have seen with the desperate lengths in which plot contrivances are created to keep the likes of Sylvanas and Kerrigan around.
