Zandalari Glowing Eyes - what are they?

I have noticed that the Zandalari, unlike most Trolls, have glowing eyes.

Is the glow effect simply some form of mundane biological luminescence or is it a sign that all Zandalari are magical?

And if their eyes are magical, does that mean that the Zandalari would essentially go blind on the spot if they ever stepped into an Anti-Magic field of some kind?
Could a Fel Hunter demon essentially burn out their magical eyes with their Mana Burn ability?

Dragonmaw orcs have glowing eyes too.

And so do Blackrocks…

I think that Blizzard simply likes the concept of glowing eyes a little bit too much

Ugh I really don’t know.

Troll eyes are supposed to glow a little in the darkness similar as cats have (or catforms in games).
But they all always had normal eyes with irises.

Zandalari are odd case, I suppose the only explanation is that they’re like super devoted to Loa and they’re extra buffed?
They’re not undead, they’re not titan constucts, they didn’t swim in radioactive well so it’s eeky to me.
In 5.2. I thought that the eye glow was caused by Thunder King empowerment.
But I’m not a fan of glowing eyes (the only exception are Dark Irons) It takes a lot from expression and personality, also removes possibility for extra cosmetic options.

I really wish Zandalari trolls at the very least had irises, and if you zoom really close you can see the outlines of it.
Their eyes are the only thing I really dislike - they look like DK army.

They seriously needs to stop with this fetish. With Zandalari they went imo too far.
Same goes for “echoing” voice. It was cool with Diablo Archangels and DKs in WoW. But DHs? Nightbore? Liteforged? LOL?

I agree with you Zakkaru on all of those except for Demon Hunters :sunny:

Given they are demonically corrupted, or even have demon(s?) inhabiting their bodies, I think the echoing voice makes total sense.

And yes, there does seem to be a magical glowing eye fetish going on with the art team.
That still won’t stop me from considering the potential implications :smirk:

Ok, I have a question for you then.

Why Illidan- the very first Demon hunter doesn’t have echoing voice?

For me it was needless addition.

My guess would be it’s simply something they didn’t think of back then. A lot of things in design are developed with iterations.

On the other hand, I am curious if those Zandalari glowing eyes offer any sort of unique or special sight.

I wouldn’t count on that. Trolls are incredibly inconsistent with their portrayal, sometimes they’re shown with eyebrows when they’re not supposed to have any.

Devs also forgets that they’re should have heel toe that was meant to be very helpful with climbing.
Females have, guys… have it drawn and not modeled. Zul doen’t even have that.

Hell, we don’t even know what is their life span.
First we had RPG books only that claimed trolls had lifespan smilar ro RL humans. But RPG isn’t canon.
Then we’ve had confirmation from blue that trolls live up to 250 years.
Then in game Talanji said that 200 years are “many lifetimes of a troll” - Many? So trolls live 30-40 years?
And recent overkill - Zul’Jin had around 2 500 years.

You’d think devs would at some point sit down, and created some sort of compedium where they establish all racial trivia like height, lifespan, looks (eyebrows/ no eyebrows, eyeglow- what’s the source?) and so on.

Because troll suffer the most from it. Many fans like me are completely clueless on this matter.
Personally, I’d be happy with lifespan of 150 years. As I see it as perfectly reasonable for this race. Not too short and not ridiculously long.

In the older sources, I remember reading that the trolls were the shortest lived races among the playable races back in Vanilla/TBC, living 20 years or so shorter than humans.

Which just adds to the confusion of today with so many different and contradicting claims about their actual lifespans.

Personally, I think the median average lifespan of most races in WoW is so high at the moment that it leaves humans as the odd one out.
I like long lived or even immortal races, but at some point, they can become too numerous and hence lose all charm and uniqueness!

Not to mention that the writers seem to struggle to write a 4000yr old being much different from a 34yr old human.

To me thier short life span didn’t make sense when they were blessed by the loa and had regeneration which should extend their life a bit.

The blue that provided 250 years claimed he had it on special chart that was provided to him with this information.

As for races with ridiculous lifespan- I see it as burden. Because it’s hard to come up with proper backstory for them, and the super long lifespan often shows that no extra wisdom or experience is working for them when rookie races can best them in other fields. For me it’s also super hard to relate to them.

Reminds me of Tabletop where you can have a 4000yr old elf start at level one. That elf must have been like the elven version of Big Lebowski his entire life up until then.

If you think about it, can you imagine how insane the difference between a 200yr old elven mage and a 40yr old elven mage should be? Especially if you account for the reduced cognitive ability and stamina of humans that start relatively early, versus elves who either don’t have it or don’t have to worry about it for a few millenia.

That’s my point, Lets take for example 17 yo rookie - like Zekhan, if he makes a mistake that could be expected from a someone of young age- that’s reasonable, understandable and respectable. Young people have tendency of making mistakes, they’re still on their path to improvement.

And let’s take someone that lives thousand of years, but makes exact same mistake like Zekhan for example - that person is downright imbecile. Long lifespan should grant extra insight for them, but no. Those nations are stagnating pretty badly with exception of belfies as Arthas’ trip made them change some of their habits.

You can also further compound this whole confusing mess with the fact that of all the races of Azeroth, humans have tended to have the most powerful mages - despite being amongst the shortest lived and least magical races of the setting.

So I have better aim for their heads of course!

I know what you mean. Blood Elf eyes are actually the same. Zoom in and you can see the Iris outline, but then this is the same with non magical Night Elves, or Draenei (Not LFD who are different). Perhaps it is because the Zandalari were kind of the progenitor race of the Troll Species, I mean this would tie in with the reason even the most unmagical Night Elf has glowing eyes.

Personally, I think the reason is a bit more prosaic. I loved the ‘Warbringers’ cinematics. I can forgive Sylvanas her guitar slide into Arthas, because the rest was pretty ballsy stuff, they basically showed a pre-teen child being killed. Brave move. Anyway, I digress.

So, Malfurion and Illidan are both born with glowing eyes meaning they will be magically potent, and yet Aszhara -Wasn’t-? Sylvanas is a High Elf in her flashback, yet she quite clearly has ‘normal’ eyes, yet High Elves -didn’t-?
I honestly think where we see that, is to convey emotion in the eyes, the windows to the soul, as poets say. Both Aszhara and Sylvanas are shown with ‘normal’ eyes, despite the fact that both should surely have been glowing like car headlights at that point…

Nightborne don’t really have an echoing voice? mine just sounds terribly English when I try to get her to cast without picking a target

Yes, yes you would, I still remember the massive debates about Elven lifespan, at least they’ve -kind of- sorted that out now, and people don’t think they live for 300 years. Its still a mess though. Its implied that Dwarves and Gnomes live for centuries, but we don’t know how long.
My own Headcanon with Trolls is that naturally they live roughly as long as humans, but -because- of their Regeneration, they stay healthy and in their prime until the very end of their lives, when they rapidly decline. Essentially, and without being too horrid about it, cellular growth in overdrive is basically Cancer, not in the internet ‘hurr durr’ way, but that’s what Cancer actually is. As such I see Trolls being super fit and healthy, then a very rapid decline at the very end of their lives.

Ahh, that’s frame of reference though. None of us can conceive of being 40 when a teenager, now, in my 40’s I can’t conceive of being 80, so given that the writers and players of characters are all human, we just have no frame of reference as to how a creature that lives for millennia would think or act. Its problematic, for sure.

I don’t think they have the most powerful mages, even those powerhouses like Jaina and Khadgar are referred to as the most powerful of their People. I think the phrase was “An Elf could light a candle from across a room, a human would blow it up”. Its all about what you’re trying to do. If you’re trying to hammer a nail into some wood, you use controlled precise taps, you don’t just take an almighty swing at it.

Maybe you shouldn’t apply it on fantasy race, when their biology isn’t exactly tied to RL stuff. We don’t know exactly how their regeneration work, and it’s also enhanced by the blessing of the Loa.

I’ll go with what GM said, he said that he had a chart with racial life spans, and this is reasonable lenght for troll race I think.

Nah I still hate it. WTB normal eyes on Zandalaris.

You have glowing eyes too, einstein.

No demon inside of the man.
Besides he gets it when he uses his true power.

As for the glowing eyes of the Zandalari.
Eons of servitude to the Loa likely infused them with great power.

Why would I shoot myself?

To make Azeroth a better place?

But on serious note, I meant that you’re as easy target to aim then.

the trolls should kill them selves first since their a accident a germ, a parasite pretty sure azeroth never invited you be born on her body all land is Azeroth land and your not welcome most likely

Roleplay forums are in different section. And speaking about parasite, how about your kind returns where it came from?

Trolls are true Azeroth’s Natives. First sentinent race to ever walk on this planet, you get rid of trolls you get rid off Azeroth’s identity.
