Hey there, i am intrested in RPing an Zandalari Troll. For this ive chosen hunter as class. But i was wondering if anyone got some tips or big points before i start doing the RP itself. Ive read somethings here and there but always handy to know more and be sure. And little note for loa i am thinking Gonk, Bwonsamdi or Jani. But if you got tips or big points i need to know, please let me know. And further i wish you a wonderfull day
In regards to general roleplay, you’ll want to make sure you’ve installed one of the RP addons - TRP3, MRP, XRP - so that people can see your character’s profile and get an idea about them. Not mandatory, but it’ll make things a lot easier for you.
Whatever loa you pick is going to be a pretty impactful choice. From my brief stint as a troll roleplayer, trolls usually pick only one loa (unless you’re going to roleplay a shadow hunter) and will dedicate their lives to them. Obviously, this isn’t every troll – but it’s a pretty widespread stint among their culture.
Check out some of the wiki pages for the loa to get a general idea of them. Some loa are pretty bare-bones, so there’s a lot of freedom and wiggle room in determining what customs and traditions your troll might follow.
One tip I can give when you start your Zandalari is aside from all the loa stuff. Is good to think what social standing your Zandalari would stand.
These are usually done through the caste system which involve basic stuff like Warrior, Peasant and Priest caste. Naturally you can be outside of it as a Castless (excellent choice for Jani followers) or Exile’s. Social standing will help you in characterization depending on what kind of life they have led.
Loa and Caste choice and you will be on your way, good luck finding character that will be the most fun for you.
Hello, I’ve breifly RPed a Zanda in the past and have been a big fan of Troll lore for years, so i’ll add in what I can to the good info the above posters have said.
The two biggest things that are going to impact your RP as a Zanda are their social caste and Loa, but these things don’t have to define who your character is overall. You could be a kind and generous member of the noble caste or an arrogant and self-righteous peasant. Think of the caste as their framework and starting point, then play around with the kind of character you want to be from there (For example: I want to play a shifty, rougish character, but also from the noble caste…maybe my characterer was an orphan chosen by Jani )
There is an important feature of Zandalari society that is often overlooked: the fate of orphans. If a young Zanda is orphaned they are taken to the orphange in Zuldazar to be raised by the Priests there. Whilst there they will be tested for future battle prowess and a connection to any of the Loa. If they are found to be promosing Warriors they are elevated to the warrior caste and trained, if they are found to have a connection to a Loa they are elevated to the priest caste and sent for training. And if they have both they are sent to become a Prelate (Paladin of the Loa). This supercedes the caste of their parents, and does not carry any stigma with it. It also gives you a tonne of freedom to come up with an interesting RP character, so keep it in mind!
In regards to Loa, Wowpedia has a list of all the troll loa along with their domains, which tribes worship them and if they’re currently alive. I’d highly recommend checking it out, as there are more than we see in BfA. On top of that a Loa does not have to specifically be one of the Wild Gods. They can also be elementals, powerful ancestors or other cosmic beings such as Naaru (although thats one I’ve never seen done before). If you want you can have your character worship a minor Loa like that, rather than one of the big ones. For example a Priest who worships a Fire Elemental and through it gains powerful fire magic. If you were a Priest of a minor loa your social standing would be lower I believe, but you’d still be in the Priest caste!
Trolls are an extremely versatile race, both in game and in RP. Play around and when you’ve come up with a concept you like theres probably a way to make it fit!
Others said a lot of already the important stuff, so just to add my two cents;
Troll regeneration has been largely inconsistent in source and magnitude of effectiveness some cannot regenerate from bites, to others regenerating crushed necks in heat of battle. As of right now I believe troll regeneration is meant to be natural and how effective it is would be up to you, since all sources are pretty inconsistent I would advise you not to stress it out.
I would also say, don’t be afraid of concepts, there is a LOT of stuff you can do with voodoo, trolls are meant to be fun so go wild (within reason)
As already written there is a strong social stratification within Zandalari culture, everyone has their place and going against the grain of that position is fraught. Of course there are always avant-garde and outcasts sorts but compared to other Trolls they have a highly sophisticated and organised society, a thing they are very proud about.
There is a small irony that the Zandalari seem to get on better with the Blood Elves and Nightborne more than their fellow ‘backwater’ Troll cousins, as evidenced by interactions between the groups during the Zuldazar campaign. There is absolutely room to be a snooty, high cultured Zandalari.
Everyone’s already given much more information than I could, but I’d note the prelates as of current have only been shown in the game to be of Rezan, the only hint of a non-Rezan one being from Hearthstone. People who are both chosen by a loa and have martial prowess would likely be war-priests (or raptari, if chosen by Gonk) rather than prelates, until it’s noted whether more than just Rezan gets this specific entourage of holy warriors. Prelates are chosen from those gifted in battle and blessed by the loa Rezan from birth. They belong to the priest caste. Most prelates lost their powers following the death of Rezan, so it would make sense for some to seek out a new loa if their loyalty is weak.
