Zereth Mortis intro more plot holes than swiss cheese

I’ve just started playing the Zereth Mortis stuff, and in first half hour:

  1. Jailer says the only place that we can set foothold at is “of no importance”.
  2. Shandris just arrives, we just arrived, we have no idea what this place is, what these things are. Shandris and I see Jailer’s forces subjegating a robot and she says “They’re controlling the Automa”, like what Shandris, do you have some level of clairvoyance I am not privy of? Who told you, what the hell is Automa?

Writing is definitely the worst part of WoW, gameplay is decent, environment is great, but damn is the writing bad, almost feels like Steve is dripping lemon in my eyes.

We are being played…

We are introduced to the term ‘Automa’ almost as soon as we arrive in ZM, by Firim.

  1. Is the usual villain hubris trope. Also as things are right now, the armored Jailer is feeling pretty invincible considering he can dominate any mortal instantly. Which as far as I can assume, leads to that plot device we will get one of the next weeks.

  2. Means that Shandris like a good commander looked up the information of what the Maw walker learned before she arrived.

Also gotta love the jailer seeing us with those automa or w/e they are and just walk away, just letting us all live because he needs us to defeat him.

Which is when the Void and the Old Gods, will make their move…it would be good to get Xal’atath back in the game.

It has a plot?!

Well i loved at the start how we just …summon the last sigil out of the efing nowhere…like what. What was the point of the last two parches then if it can be just summoned like this?

Why did jailer even bothered collecting them when he could also just snap the finger…like wtf.

Because the other sigils were needed.

Not out of nowhere, but from the Senior Attendants…since the Arbiter was the most Senior of the Attendent creatures, used to contain Zovaal’s…fused sigil/stone of judgement, chest thingy…Remember?
Also, as Azog said: Zovaal needed the other sigils, as well.

Did the maw walker tell her personally? Or did we text her a sms? Facebook status update maybe?

I thought it was relevant, Shandris is a good Sub-commander…silence in the ranks.

So she stalked us trough her Shadowmelding rangers then… I see. Heck why not

The race name was revealed at the beginning. The problem lies with us not speaking ingame most of the time but the NPCs behaving like we do/did.

Correct…I gave Shandris and Lilian permission to lurk unseen, should I require back-up.
Xal’atath not so much, but ‘Her Voidiness’ is so very, very good at stalking…and whispering…always whispering…

I think I struggle the most with the implied timeline.

I mean, after The Jailer beats us in The Sanctum of Domination we go back to Korthia and do some talking about our next steps.

And then we basically set off for Zereth Mortis. So by the time we arrive The Jailer has already been looking around for quite some time.

Anyway, a short while into the questline we see The Jailer continuing to move toward gaining access to The Sepulchre. And he seems to get that by the end of chapter 3.

By this point our character has spent less than a day in Zereth Mortis.

So now we get back to camp and Bolvar basically says that we should continue to explore the land and solve its mysteries, because maybe it will help us against The Jailer.

What?!

Because what my character seems to be doing now is random adventure tasks that stretch over days and weeks likely months in terms of story. Like we’re really digging into the mysteries of Zereth Mortis.

But at the same time I’m supposed to believe that The Jailer has gained access to The Sepulchre, yet we still have enough time left to stop him?!

This does not make sense to me.

I cannot connect the urgency of needing to stop The Jailer right now from doing whatever he’s doing in The Sepulchre, whilst also seemingly having plenty of time to go on adventures in Zereth Mortis.

I don’t understand the timeline here at all.

Are we in a hurry to stop The Jailer or not?

We currently have no way to follow the Jailer into the Sepulchre, he used a one time code…just saying

Yeah I get that.

So we go back to camp and Bolvar has no clue what to do next, so he basically tells us to go explore the land and its mysteries, because maybe some random crap will emerge that will help us against The Jailer. What a plan!

So that’s what we’re doing now, right?

Our character is spending days or weeks or months learning this mysterious language and exploring the creations of The First Ones.

But The Jailer is already inside The Sepulcher.

So why is he not already winning? Unless his plan involves him making a 10.000 piece jigsaw puzzle, then I cannot see how he can’t already have done whatever he intends to do.

Shadowlands is the plot hole.

Wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff…further security measures and yes, Zovaal loves jigsaws, almost as much as lounging around eating pizza and playing computer games, when he should be cleaning his room and ticking off items on the ‘To Do’ list.

Back in a moment…

Bang…Bang…Bang
Zovaal, open this door…Zovaal, open this door, immediately!
Just wait 'till I get in there…You are going to get wedgied, within an inch of your life!

Sorry, you were saying…

:yum:

It’s just poor writing. And I hate to be that guy, because I generally think that criticism is unwarranted.

But there are some holes in the timeline, and that’s been the case throughout all of Shadowlands.

On one hand it’s a story where we’re meant to be hot on the heels of The Jailer, because his plan is basically to break free from The Maw, collect the Covenant sigils, travel to Zereth Mortis, and gain access to The Sepulcher. And if he gets access, then it’s over.

On the other hand there’s the story of the Shadowlands, which always goes through Bolvar who tells us to go out and explore the lands and assist The Covenants, or explore the lands and stop The Jailer’s forces, or explore the lands and uncover the mysteries of The First Ones.

But those two timelines don’t mix. And it feels confusing when Blizzard does mix them and you go from doing something that sounds very urgent to doing something else that appears to be a long journey in itself.
