83% of Smartphone Games Fail Within 3 Years After Launch
According to Atomik Research for SuperScale’s Good Games Don’t Die, 83% of mobile games fail in the first three years after launch, and 43% are canceled mid-development.
The research is based on interviews with 500 game developers from the US and UK, so the numbers likely differ from the Japanese market but shouldn’t be too far off. According to the report, 76% of launched games reached peak revenue within the first year, and only 4% achieved the same peak in the second year.
The report also found that 38% of the games didn’t add content or get regular updates, with less than half releasing monthly updates to their games.
While smartphone game development has a high risk of failure, 78% of the developers prefer working on them. However, over a third said that the uncertainty in the industry “is stopping them from developing new games,” with 30% who felt that the current market “is too difficult to succeed in.”
