Hi, my launcher just started downloading a 16.4GB patch for something… should this be happening or is it borked?
Same here, it seems weird if the 8.1 patch is so huge. I’m not sure if even BfA weighed that much.
For me, not only did it start downloading the 16.4gb patch, the bnet app started using 90% of my CPU. No idea why.
Mine gave up shortly after it tried to start but it is the 8.1 patch.
Download-size not actual space taken up right ? I guess it´s a good thing that ist big. Im really excited to see the new content tried to spoil myself as little as possible.
Have a good one,
Turintan
I have around 7,53GB more to download, already downloaded 45%. My WoW folder at the moment is around 62GB. Since my SSD is 120 GB, I can’t even install this patch anymore. I could remove Hearthstone from SSD, but that’s only GB. Honestly the size of WoW data is getting to an insane level, and I feel I’ll need an SSD just for WoW alone soon
Is anyone else’s WoW folder that big? perhaps I need to reinstall as something went wrong along the way?
I had the same patch size this morning the more interesting thing was it pushed my i7 6700k with 32gb ram to 100%, i mean should it seriously own my computer to download a patch.
And as a side note i also am having issues with wow size mine is currently 90.4GB. it seems like there is a lot of variance on people game folder size.
Have this same issue But I have overclocked I7-8700k. Even new games don’t use my cpu in 100%.

Seems to be actual space unless something iffy is going on, I lost that full 16GB on my SSD downloading this patch.
Isn´t this a pre patch ? I guess as soon as its actually patched the size might reduce.
Given the size of this update, it’s expected to re-write a lot of the data currently.
The installation of BfA was only 15Gb, so this even has more data than the entire expansion’s layout and systems so far.
So for sure, the launcher will probably “reclaim” some diskspace next week.
Expect the new multi threading, coming in 8.1 to be a rewrite of existing code - we’ll know for certain when we fire up on Wednesday (?) if the patch takes a while to incorporate itself.
Dunno about anyone else, but my WoW install folder shows as close to 70GB, but I’ll have another look at it after 8.1 goes live…
The actual download is 2~4gb at most, 16gb is mostly reorganizing existing data, which explains the CPU load increase.
Proof - See how much gigabytes you “download” in an hour, the rate will be much faster than your download speed.
My wow folder went from 60gb to 74gb, I had to transfer it off my ssd to patch and can’t move it back. If it’s not temporary blizzard just lost a customer.
I had to remove WoW from old 120 GB SSD to 2TB SATA already … until I buy new SSD.Not only WOW but all games as Windows progressively took almost all SSD capacity.
Same.
I’m using a 120 GB SSD. The OS and WoW basically fills it up.
Am I gonna have to get a dedicated SSD just for WoW?
Time for bigger system drives, ladies…
I had the same thing the updater went crazy hammering my CPU and SSD using loads of RAM the download speed dropped to a crawl so I stopped the update and started the download again then it was fine after took about 15sec after that to finish the update.
Being obsessive detailist the bnet article states only 70GB requirement, seeing it goes above the value on a pre-patch week, this could use updating:
Also, having a 120GB SSD with WoW on it alongside the system is a POOR USER CHOICE, can’t blame anyone really. Get a bigger SSD or move back to HDD.
