Developer's Note
  • Developers’ note: With the launch of Shadowlands, we reduced the maximum number of targets that several abilities could hit specifically to address a few gameplay problems related to pulling a large number of enemies in dungeons. Players often refer to these changes as the “AOE target cap.” Our intention was to reduce the effectiveness of burst AOE buttons against large target counts (i.e. 15-20 enemies) while also increasing their effectiveness against fewer targets (e.g. 3-5 enemies) and communicating that strength clearly in the tooltips. The abilities that remained “uncapped” were generally ones that offered lower damage over a longer period of time (e.g. Blizzard or Consecration).

Along with other changes, we set out to move away from “pull as many enemies as possible, use all your cooldowns and delete them” as the predominant strategy across various forms of content. We’ve received a lot of feedback that these abilities not hitting enemies in their range in any way creates a feel problem for WoW combat but is also an issue for trivial encounters like farming legacy content.

For many of the abilities that underwent the change from uncapped to a strict target cap in 9.0, we’re converting the damage to “reduced damage beyond 5 targets.” This means that the ability will deal full damage against 5 targets, then reduced damage to each additional target beyond 5. This means that while the overall damage done by the ability increases with the number of targets, the individual damage done to each target will decrease. This solution means these abilities and their relative classes will still have a very strong niche against packs of 4-6 enemies. As always, tuning will change as a result of this shift over the next few weeks based on your feedback from the PTR

The following area-of-effect abilities are no longer maximum target capped and instead deal reduced damage beyond 5 or 8 targets.

  • Beast Mastery

    • Bestial Wrath Sends you and your pet into a rage, instantly dealing [Attack power * 0.65 * 1 * (1 + Versatility) * 1] Physical damage to its target, and increasing all damage you both deal by 25% for 15 sec. Removes Fear and Horrify effects from your pet.

@Blizzard ? Beast cleave = Trick shots… how you can uncap one and not the other one? hello?

Welp. It’s been a god run for SV. If all hunters get uncapped aoe, rets and warriors too…

It was like that for the entirety of BFA.

Bm got a quite big buff for aoe in 9.1.5 i see.

Wonder if it will beat out mm from its role as the primary hunter spec in m+?

Venthyr convenant ability buff is intresting since its pretty good for pvp or pure single target atm. If anything necro needs a buff.

mm is still capped and bm will still do reduced dmg beyond 5 targets just not none. SV will probablly remain decent.

#[9.1.5 PTR] Announced changes to the Hunter class

  • Waiting months on months for a death chakram buff because I think Necro is cool (survival)

  • Sees buff finally, excited. What of all the possible suggestions could they have listened to? Give it extra splash damage? A buff to the damage increase per bounce?

  • Sees physical damage % increase

  • SV AOE ISNT EVEN PHYSICAL DAMAGE

Why are they limiting the damage type??? This just hurts SV the most? If it’s too OP just nerf the % increase?

The buff is just bad, a weird, poorly thought out bandaid that doesn’t address the main issues with the ability.

Was thinking the same.
Since release I’m waiting for Necro Hunter to be good, cause I just love that covenant.
But meh. Probably won’t ever will be.

Are you KIDDING me? So SV loses its only niche which was uncapped AoE, and then that AoE gets NERFED in a way that also makes it more boring to play?

I would seriously rather have falloff damage on wildfire bomb, than this carve cooldown nerf thing, which will take all the fun out of wildfire infusion juggling

What cooldown nerf thing? You can get up to 5 sec cd refund currently since it only hits 5 targets and you will get up to 5 sec refund in 9.1.5.

Yeah i realised my mistake, ignore what I said. The thing about the death chakram change being stupid af still stands. Why can’t they just make it do a bit of splash damage and/or buff the % damage increase slightly. Of all the possible changes I feel like this is one of the worst.

Build 40196

Source: https://eu.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/t/ptr-915-development-notes/311176/12

Some minor changes for hunters in this build.

Beast Mastery & Marksmanship

Talents (1)

  • Barrage Rapidly fires a spray of shots for 3 sec, dealing an average of [(14.196% of Attack power)% * 11] Physical damage to all nearby enemies in front of you. Usable while moving. Deals reduced damage beyond 58 targets.

Covenants

  • Death Chakram (Necrolord Ability) now also increases all physical damage done by you and your pet to the targets damaged by 10% for 10 seconds.

I’m still looking for a reason to go Necro Lord with my hunter.
Can this change be better than the Crit Chance Increase from Resonating Arrow?

Maybe if the targets move out of the arrow but otherwise it’s unlikely unless necrolord gets a really strong soulbind in 9.2.

And just like that - poof.
Was hoping to read something different, obv. xD
