[A-RP] Twelfth Penal Company - DISBANDED

Greetings Argent Dawn! Today I present to you the Twelfth Penal Company, fresh from the stockades!

Prelude

Water ran along the weathered, cobbled street, zig zagging down the slight slope, in the stonework, fitting through the small, barred window with ease. Another drip splashed down into the corner of the room, in a calm, perpetual rhythm. His hands joined, Kaibyrne did not raise his head as he muttered a prayer under his breath

“Holy Light, I pray to you now to thank you, Im thankful for what i have and what i will receive in the future. I thank you for the people in my life, the things that i have, and giving me the strength to love and cope in th-”

Three thunderous blows echoed into his cell as a familiar voice bellowed from outside

“Gladstone, you got a special visitor, back against the wall!”

Kaibynre pushed himself up from his knees and placed his bare, scarred back against the cold, damp wall, wincing slightly. A guardsmen helm of Stormwind follows from behind the wooden door as he checks that his instructions were followed before standing aside, revealing a weathered individual. His face was creased, with grey streaks in the black hair that fell from his chin. A scar ran diagonally across his mouth from top left down to bottom right, parting his groomed moustache. Stepping into the light, the stranger revealed his bald head, what hair he had left was shaved, he held his arms behind his back and looked at Kaibyrne with keen interest.

“Hmm”

The man simply stood there, continuing to inspect Kaibyrne as if he was shopping for a dog to add to his kennel.

“I must admit I find you to be a very interesting case Mister Gladstone.”

Kaibyrne cleared his throat to respond but the stranger cut him off and continued on

“The things you’ve done, you’ll be rotting in here for a long time, perhaps for the rest of your life, and they tell me you gave yourself up? Curious indeed.”

“I am tired of running, here I seek repentance and redemption, to be happy with myself first and foremost, hopefully then the nightmares might cease…”

“They’ll never cease, not completely lad, but I can offer what you seek, in a more productive manner than wallowing alone in this damp cell.”

“I am never alone mate, not anymore, the Li-”

The stranger waved his hand dismissively

“Alright, alright I am aware of your new found faith. This war I think they’ll be calling it the Blood War, whatever it’s called it is sucking this Kingdom dry of all resources, including soldiers”

The man strode forwards, tapping Kaibyrne on his chest, leaning in closer

“That is where you come in, you’ve served and proven that you are different from the common criminal. I believe that you are one of the few men on this side of the bars that could lead such men into battle”

Kaibyrne couldn’t help but laugh at the man’s offer before straightening himself up

“You want me? Back out there? What makes you think I want to go back? I wanted to be in here, remember?”

“Something tells me you are made for something more than this”

The bald man turns to leave, gesturing to the four walls as he does so, he stops at the door, looking over his shoulder

“If you change your mind, ask the guard for Major Lewis Brant, I’ll come find you”

Kaibyrne stood there for a few minutes, taking in all that just occured before realising the papers that laid on his bed, the lion of Stormwind stamped on the cover. Flipping open the first page it was his own prisoner record, flipping over to the second page was another prisoner and another and another.

Kaibyrne fell onto his bed and sighed, staring up at the ceiling he pondered for a moment before turning back to the book and began studying its contents……

Concept

The concept for this guild is a bunch of criminals who come from all walks of life, thrown together and are expected to not only get along but to thrive as a military unit and better not just their image to the rest of the Alliance but themselves as well. The Blood War has drained Stormwind of soldiers so she looks to her prisons now, taking a keen interest to those with former military service. The Twelfth Penal Company was cobbled together, expected to reinforce the line, wherever it is about to falter.

Note: While this is the intended idea, there is nothing stopping you from trying to RP a criminal who just wanted to get out of his cell, with no intention of bettering himself. Beware though that orders and laws still need to be upheld or there will be consequences.

OOC

The Twelfth Penal Company is a hard drilled, highly disciplined unit who follow military standards to the letter. As a result this guild will certainty not be for everyone.

The leader of the Company is one Major Lewis Brant, who is not an actual player but a character that may turn up from time to time in events and will receive reports from Kaibyrne as we go along.

While I appreciate most kinds of Criminal RP I don’t need maniacs on the loose, hacking and slashing at everything that moves, so if you’re character is unstable they can go back in his cell.

For now we will not accept caster classes, in time Priests may be allowed to enlist.

We use discord as our primary communication hub for everything, it is highly suggested that you join our discord or you will miss out!

If you are interesting in making a change in your life, and get out of your damp cell, feel free to message me in game or post your interest here and I’ll get back to you once I am home from work!

Does it? I only joined the server in march bit I havent seen any penal legions around.

We were talking about the Lost Honor cinematic and what Genn said and this very idea was talked about as a possibility, so I think it totally makes sense that a penal legion might be formed now that the Alliance has run out of soldiers.

Good Luck with your concept.

I think Soviets used this tactic as well. Penalty Battalions. Still, it seems to be a decent idea, so good luck with your guild!

The Germans did too, which inspired the Warhammer 40k penal legions which is where most people would be familiar with the concept.

I’m no expert on military structure but to me “legion” implies a rather substantial amount of manpower. I don’t give a hoot but be prepared that some people might make a stink about it.
Really interesting concept and seems well thought-out, though, so best of luck!

You are correct. If we go by the Roman Legions then a legion is about 5000 men, divided into 10 cohorts of about 500 men roughly.

To me a penal cohort doesnt sound right and Im not sure how many suitable criminals Stormwind has for military service but I doubt its in the thousands.

All that being said, I’ll probably narrow the scope to a single Cohort, as you said an entire legion is a bit large.

Think you’re better off with either a Batallion or a Company on this one.

You have a point, need to edit it tonight!

Update: Added a uniform section, which showcases the armour sets that are expected to be worn with the tabard, if you do not like the set for your armour type im happy to take alternative options!

Also changed from a Penal Legion to a Penal Company to better reflect out size both IC and OOC.

Update #2: The Twelfth lives! We have officially been created and have a page on Argent Archives, feel free to visit us there (I can’t post links :frowning: ) and whisper me in game if you are interested!

The following is a report from Captain Kaibyrne Gladstone, to Major Lewis Brant about the first day of training for the Twelfth Penal Company.

“Esteemed Major Brant,

Today the Twelfth Company was escorted by the Stormwind Guard to an isolated, outlying field near Stormwind City, lead by the lovely Dame Sareial Easthill. Dame Easthill seems Stalwart and unflinching, I have no doubt that she will keep the rest of the prisoners in line, her presence can be felt, even out of sight. Corporal Mckellar shined today, keeping the convicts in line came naturally to the Gilnean and he was able to back up his rank on the training ground, this man defended House Greymane for a living and it shows with his swordwork. The convict known simply as Drake shows real promise, all those years sailing and drinking on the high seas actually taught the pirate some form of skill with both blade and gunpowder, being able to hold off even Corporal Mckellar for a time. Goliat Breenen while merely a thief seems to have shown some natural affinity for fighting, even with his limited vision due to an gouged eye. Upton Uras seems to have no problem fighting dirty, striking a punch when the enemy is in close range, he also seems to be comfortable throwing daggers, with very impressive accuracy. Finally that leaves us with Drud, while appearing slow like most Worgen he harbours a fierce temper and it came out tonight. I put them all to the test tonight in a free for all and Drud stood alone, victorious.

Despite a few disciplinary issues, today’s training session has settled my fears about the Company, while only a few have military experience I believe we can drill them into soldiers the Alliance would be proud of to have flying it’s banner. We are all ready and eager for our first deployment in a few days time.

Glory to the Alliance,

Captain Kaibyrne Gladstone.”

The following is a report form Captain Kaibyrne Gladstone to Major Lewis Brant, regarding the Twelfth Penal Company’s first deployment to Westfall.

“Esteemed Major Brant,

The moon sits proud in the dark, misty sky of Westfall as the unrelenting rain assails my tent, firstly I am happy to report that the cargo of Lothar’s Vigil has been secured and has already been seen safely back to Stormwind. I personally questioned the citizens of Moonbrook about the recent rumours which varied greatly but all of their absurd stories pointed to the northern coastline of the region, upon arrival we found Lothar’s Vigil washed up on the rocks, murlocs scurrying all over the deck and the beach. We fought off the slimey, green tide and searched the area. Unfortunately the crew aboard had been slain, and the murlocs were feasting upon the poor souls, I hope the Light comforted them in their final moments. We searched the rest of the ship but the cargo was missing, presumably stolen. Soon after Corporal Mckellar discovered some Gnoll paw prints on the beach, we followed the trails due west, cornering the thieves in their den. We made short work of the paltry creatures before slaying their leader, Sagehide who made a few interesting remarks before Dame Sareial Easthill put him down. He claimed to lead the Riverpaw pack, which despite Hoggers death seem to have managed to survive, I will be surprised if this is the last we’ll hear from them. He also claimed that he would slay the other “Gnolls, Humans and Orcs” the last one caught me as a bit odd. He could of course mean the Horde but Gnolls aren’t that intelligent. I suspect that he could be referring to the orcs that dwell near Blackrock Mountain, might be something for SI7 to look into.

Dame Sareial Easthill and Corporal Jack Mckellar once again proved their worth today, slaying both murlocs and gnolls with relative ease, a testament to their training and experience. The Brackett brothers while lacking focus have shown potential to cause serious damage to whoever stands on the frontline, ally and foe alike. A new arrival, Cyara Silverwind also a mage was critical to the missions success. A High Elf her skill with the use of portals ensured that we could move the recovered cargo efficiently and rapidly.

Regardless Sagehide and his Gnolls did indeed steal the weapons, i’m afraid we will never truly know how it ran aground but at least the cargo can finally find it’s way to our soldiers further afield. Overall another impressive display by the Twelfth today sir.

Light bless you,

Captain Kaibyrne Gladstone.”

What a wonderful concept  good luck with the guild

Edit: I only thought about the uniform, isn’t it hard to get it when it (from what I saw) only drops from timewalking?

Hello and thank you! If you are referring to the mail uniform set, then I am probably going to change it to an easier set to acquire. Just waiting for a mail wearer to join us

Lively and plentiful RP, harsh discipline and budding friendships (and rivalries). Can’t wait for Basic!

The following is a report from Captain Kaibyrne Gladstone to Major Lewis Brant, regarding the Twelfth Penal Company’s second deployment to the Burning Steppes.

“Esteemed Major Brant,

These are trying times for the Twelfth Penal Company. Firstly I would like to highlight that despite the issues I am about to address that the Twelfth still completed the mission assigned to them, with exceptional valour and bravery. The orc who has been rallying the Blackrock remnants to attack Redridge, Brannok has been slain. It seems your initial concerns were proven correct as we cornered the mad Orc he screamed the following !”“Orb tells me all the secrets, Orb told me about the weapons, Orb told me about the Riverpaw, THE ORB TOLD ME ABOUT YOU!” Unfortunately this orb he spoke of was smashed but it must be a communication device of some kind, whoever was on the other end remains unknown. With Brannok’s demise I believe that the local troubles should simmer down to more manageable levels, the kingdom is safe once more, for now.

With the good news out of the way let me report on the issues mentioned previously. Notable while enroute to Redridge Marcail Westmill attempted to desert the Company, before being apprehended by Golait Breenen at gunpoint. Upon their return I restrained them and continued to march to Lakeshire where I have both Westmill and Breenen flogged publically as neither had permission to break rank and run off into the forest, I hope that deters the others…

After our victory in the Burning Steppes we returned to Lakeshire as Westmill’s injuries had become infected. Once there, Brandalf Brackett, Kailand Brackett and Cyara Silverwind got into a brawl in the local inn, which resulted in the Brackett brothers attempting to kill Silverwind. Luckily she managed to shield herself as she was thrown into the fire, preventing a disaster. Kailand Brackett then assaulted a guard who came in to break up the brawl, adding another felony to his record. Not to add insult to injury but he brazingly admitted to stealing chickens during his stay. This and his lack of respect for his superiors and fellow personnel made my decision very easy. Once back in the Stockades I gathered the Company and forced Kailand to flog his brother whom I had planned to flog Kailand back, however Kailand snapped for a moment and knocked his brother out, who is now in the infirmary with a swollen left eye. Kailand Brackett is a constant issue and I have agreed with Dame Sareial Easthill that if he acts out of line again that she will remove his head from his shoulders, although I am not sure if even that will shut him up.

Due to these recent acts I shall be locking down the Twelfth, restricting them to the Stockades where discipline will be drilled into them, until they know nothing else. For the rest, I believe Corporal Mckellar has his eyes on Drake for a shield wall which would support out mages nicely, I have accepted Silverwind back into out ranks following her pardon thanks to your “suggestion” and I have recruited a few more faces to our ranks, notably Hollins a transfer from another military unit and Hjelmar Stouthelm a dwarven smuggler.

I will report to you in the following days as to how the convicts will respond to martial training and drills, I trust that we will change them yet.

Glory to the Twelfth Penal Company and the Alliance,

Captain Kaibyrne Gladstone.

This week, one of the convicts got killed after having served for less than 48 hours… so much for earning your freedom!

RIP Hammer the loud-mouth dwarf. You were :poop: for a soldier, but we all enjoyed your company.

The following is a report from Captain Kaibyrne Gladstone to Major Lewis Brant, regarding the Twelfth Penal Company’s first week of Basic Training, in the Stockades.

“Esteemed Major Brant,

After taking a step back following severe disciplinary issues during our initial deployments the Twelfth Penal Company is ready to serve the Alliance once more. I put the company through Basic Training, although nobody passed all four modules at least some of them show promise. Terry Hollins has passed three out of the four, I suspect that he will reach Private once the next cycle rolls around, we have a few partials and failures but overall nothing impressive.Discipline has been restored to the Company following the recent behaviour of certain individuals, they now know where they stand. During our stay we recruited a few individuals from below Berthram Bradshaw and Vinzcent Bradford, both seem solid but time will only tell. We also had a walk in sign up willingly, I thought the man was crazy but his file mentioned special forces and I won’t question it, a Modian Goldenfield.

Following the conclusion of Basic Training we redeployed to Westbrook Garrison at your command, where we discovered the Garrison to be inhabited by none other than the Sixth Legion, who despite the unexpectedness of our arrival greeted us warmly. Unfortunately a scumbag by the name of Thurrius Blackhammer deserted the Garrison but was swiftly shot in the back by Modian Goldenfield, good riddance to bad rubbish I say, the Company is better off without his ilk. We shall hold Westbrook and continue to train the men until further orders.

Light Bless you,

Captain Kaibyrne Gladstone.
