First of all, let’s clarify, this is not a rage or a rant, just a conversation starter/public opinion research. What do you think about the state of the community in 2024?
Obviously there are big problems with the game as well, when you look at bots and cheaters/gold traders, but the community is the source of that all, if the players didn’t demand gold purchases and boosts, then a complete business would not have been built on it.
And here comes the question, why do we play? pvp is mostly dead, in pve there are people who chase the logos, there are ‘‘BUYERS’’, and BOOSTERS and that’s it.
Everyone wants to skip/speedrun everything, they don’t even want to play the game, they just want the instant reward.
There is no communication and community building, everyone is selfish and toxic.
What do you think about all of this? will it get any better in the future? or just worse? and its not only about WOW, but the entire ONLINE gamer community in general.
my opinion? things get worse before they get better. the divide will keep widening and more and more players will continue to jump ship until it eventually reaches breaking point. either private server culture will continue to rise or people will quit wow for good. this ain’t cope it’s literally the direction public consciousness is moving; it’s becoming disillusioned with big corporations and getting sh*t done for itself. pardon my french
I love the community because everyone is mocking Blizzard and the devs on every post and it’s desrved and fun to read.
I’m in a great community, a guild. We work together and help each other. Solo players is the caveat you should add OP.
Nope, because it has nothing to do with wow, you have this behavior in other games aswell.
My experience in the game varied a lot. As I have read some of the comments here, maybe the reason why community is so hasty and less-talkative is a spirit of today progress mentality (it is quite palpable in the other games too) - but thats a topic for another day and another time.
WoW Retail - Mostly playing solo. BUT almost no chance to talk with someone. You will get some random invitation to guild with 500+ members. It was kinda weird and sometimes quite rude how players replied to others. I believe there are social guild with friendly-ish atmo, but it requires searching (like everywhere else).
WoW Classic - At the beginning of WotLK there was a few very good nostalgic guild with good folks. We cried salty tears together above memories and “good ol’ days” where we have started to play WoW on school. Quite nice time. Nowadays it is silent mostly, maybe because of the waiting for (for some problematic) upcoming Cata. Everything is done, everyone is waiting it seems. Now playing mostly solo.
WoW Hardcore - THIS! One of the best communities of player I have ever met. Seriously. I felt (and still feeling) a hearthwarming vivid community life in guilds. Supporting, talkative, active in guild-events and motivating (in case you just die). Maybe it is a selected type of ppl, that takes things slowly overal (because in Hardcore you just must go slowly). Usualy the ppl that just enjoy the game during the slow leveling where you got the time to just look around and have a good chat.
Overall, I am that type of player who came to WoW after long time. I am nearly in my 30’s, started a family, I read lore books again, listening to soundtracks, reading quests and NPC texts, watching older Blizzcon ceremonies and enjoying WoW and Blizz stuff now, because in the past I just couldn’t, because of very low student income. Now I kinda lack of time, but still I am trying to use it properly and truly.
To be honest, looking for Cata, because that was the time when I had to quit WoW (money) and now is the chance to enjoy it all again without such limits.
Take it easy good folks. WoW is the place for relaxation and a little bit chance to escape from the real world. I believe we all want to have a good time in Azeroth.
Take care and have fun!
