Addon manager

with the twitch/curseforge app being bought by overwolf in november i don’t know what addon managers are safe & reliable

what is a good alternative for when twitch shuts the app down? i heard about wowup, is that safe? malware?

WoWUp and CurseBreaker are both nice, both are open source. One’s graphical, the other’s a bit more for the command-line warriors among us (hi!).

I’ve had pretty good experience with CurseBreaker, haven’t tried WoWup yet, but it does appear to be decent.

I use WowUp it’s pretty awesome but CurseBreaker is equally good.

I’ve found this list that may be helpful:

And there’s also this:

You mean, you let Abominable Intelligence manage your tools? Are you, like, crazy? Today it’s addons, tomorrow it’s “Open the WoW, Hal” “I’m sorry Dreamkore, I’m afraid I can’t let you do that”

That said, if you prefer the lazy way, try CurseBreaker. Less requirements than big fat adware that is Overwolf, same functionality in regards to addons.

yeah i dont make the addons, i just use them, i don’t care for knowing how or why they work i just need them to work

kind of like why some people prefer windows over linux

It’s not rocket science to download .zip, unpack it, put it into Addons folder, enjoy. This also guarantees there’s nothing there that YOU PERSONALLY did not place there. Some addons try downloading extra baggage that you may or may not want. So prevent them from doing so in the first place.

Wait until your favourite addon breaks because SOMETHING was deemed “protected function” and addons are no longer allowed to use it. Or it wasn’t updated for the newest WoW build and the game considers it too old to work while in fact it does work perfectly apart from “expiration date”. If solutions are either “get another addon” - but you liked the previous one too much - or “get yours fixed”, chances are you will try fixing it yourself before giving up.

I looked through

And decided WoWUp is going to be the one for me. Have uninstalled Twitch and have swapped over.

Dunno if its about the topic, but I think “H.H.T.D.” (Healers Have To Die) addon shoundnt be an addon but in-game feature. Everyone in BGs should see big + over the opposite team healers. This will make the game less toxic (“attack the healer, ya nob!”) etc.

It really isn’t.

Would the new Overwolf not be the new best manager? It would be weird for them to do anything other than what is basically already established on the Twitch app.

Considering the Twitch app itself was riddled with ads, and wasn’t exactly known for its reliability (like, the countless times it installed the classic version of an addon for BfA, or vice versa), and Overwolf has a reptuation of being terrible, and the manager will still be full of ads… nope, the new app will definitely not be the best manager around.

Pretty much any of the ones mentioned above, including downloading addons manually, by hand, and extracting them, will be a better, safer experience.

basically what tinkspring said, overwolf hasn’t really gained the best reputation over the years

I’m currently using CurseBreaker which is command-line and works on Mac too.

WoWUp looks nice and more user-friendly but the Mac version is not available yet.

WoWUp looks like this, does everything I need and seems more lightweight than twitch was. I can search for addons, it updates the ones I have and best of all no ads!

Meant to reply to Lakdro sorry Dreamkore

Out of curiosity, is it possible to migrate my current addons+Settings from curseforge to a new Mannager? I’ll back-up the addons folder anyways, but i wanna make sure.

I just did it with WowUp. All I had to do was download the program. It’s a portable version, which means you don’t even need to install anything. Everything you need is in a single exe file.

Uninstalled Twitch aswell and went with WoWup, it is seriously a lot faster than Twitch ever was and I don’t trust Overwolf in the slightest.

After a reminder about overwolf when I logged into curseforge yesterday I started looking into other clients.

WowUp is the one I’m switching over to. Lightweight and does what it needs to do.
It helps that its pretty much: download and like Jensen would say: It just works. :>
