Fixed it for ya.
Actually I agree with that.
I think that is one of the few things wrong with void elf roleplay. They are supposed to be this super small force of powerful people, right? Roleplaying a civilian or so is just… completely wasted potential and you could easily just roleplay a human or so instead.
Even as a Human it’s wasted, a lot of it is generally just a social life in a fantasy setting which normally doesn’t amount to much.
Unironically think civillian RP is the worst type of RP. Yes, the worst, no exceptions.
virgin civilian RP vs. Chad Peasant Play.
She posted wanting to post on a void elf, so I addressed the void elf.
Nothing offensive or call-out about it.
It could be alright, I RP as a commoner of sorts [well did] but there’s just such limited imagination with most people who do it.
I mean think of the story of Thief, for the most part Garrett is a common thief and he’s simply trying to pay the rent. While he carries out one of his jobs he ends up unleashing Armageddon led by a Pagan God and now he needs to help stop it.
People just need to take into consideration that Azeroth is a world where many apocalyptic things could happen then you can make Civilian RP more interesting I mean we’ve seen Civilian conscripts in WoTLK so it’s not like this couldn’t be easily done.
Ironically Blood Elves are the most fittest race to do what I’m trying to describe.
Well for humans they live in a society so you have labourers, peasants, nobles and so on. Void elves are just “elves that use the void.”
I’m still trying to not be too negative about the void elves since again, they are a new race but as far as we’ve seen, they put their potential to good use and have not begun a more passive way of life.
Nobody cares about hating Void Elves OOC now.
Oh I do agree but I still say even if you RP a Commoner as whatever race doing whichever job it’s incredibly wasteful.
Not necessarily, we have Void Elf civilians ingame. Elestrae Dawnshard an Enchanter, Aevedos a Tailor, two or three innkeepers, smiths. Provisioners of all sorts can help support the Void Elves cause in their own way and we see that ingame, so I believe it is fair enough if someone wants to portray one.
It wouldn’t be the same experience as RPing a Human either. First of all you are an exile and have to start with next to nothing in this new city. Secondly you still battle the whispers and have to overcome that when mastering your craft. Lastly, the combatants amongst the Void Elves are at the front lines of the war with the Horde but the civilians amongst the Void Elves are at the frontlines of the mistrust they face from the general populace, not all would treat them in such a way but there are certainly those that would.
My time RPing as a Void Elf I haven’t really seen many civilians. The vast majority I encounter are warriors of some sort or researchers. I’ve encountered 2 or 3, but regardless it does not bother me personally.
I need 2 Galloons of Wine, a Longsword, and cheese for this venture.
I wish I could reply to multiple people without making seperate posts. Fk it.
Imo it makes total sense, the portal to Velf HQ is in Stormwind and there are tons of Velf NPCs in the city too.
I’ve never understood why people expect void researchers and their helpers to all be soldiers, especially with there being civilian Velf NPCs… ![]()
Even Alleria didn’t know until she went to the Sunwell itself, and Idk if she would have told any Velves about it. Maybe.
I’ve always assumed it’s just because not all of Umbric’s entourage were void researchers. Indeed, practically every non-caster class, such as Rift Wardens and Ghostblades and Umbral Rangers, were probably not there studying the void. Maybe they were hired guards, suppliers, tagging-along merchants, etc. that were caught up in Telogrus with the rest.
I actually base my own Velf’s story around that kind of background, because she’s a rogue and not an spriest, so it makes more sense in my mind.
I RP my Velf as very anxious around the bulkier of Alliance races because of this. Hard to trust people that would’ve killed you without a second thought just a few months ago. Leads to good character development later on though, potentially!
Speaking of character development…
My Velf is actually a no-combat-experience pleb that is not fully comfortable with training or being pushed into wars because of some Ethereal f**k and dumb luck. When I was planning to main this character for RP, I figured, between getting better at handling voices, combat, using shadow powers and integrating into the Alliance, there was tons and tons of potential for Velf characters, and this one in particular!
Unfortunately the OOC hate in every Discord server and it’s reflection in ingame RP made me give up and main another character, so that development never actually happened. Kind of a shame.
Yes but no. The velves are, by and large, represented as elite units under Alleria’s wing, former foes of the Alliance, at that. It makes more sense for them to be out earning their keep instead of trudging through town, slacking all day.
Rifts, enchantment, and so on. Plenty ways for velves to make themselves useful instead of running off to be a regular ol’ baker or whatnot.
Basically, Carbek said it best. The ren’dorei should be doing their best at proving their worth in whatever capacity they can.
I dislike the majority of void elf RP I have encountered because it dismisses the cooler, more captivating potentials that come with the race as an excuse to play a “blood elf” in Stormwind. Most of those I encounter are purple humans, with little to no flair or interest about them. I personally have a void elf that I don’t play enough, but I try to contribute something to the negativity attributed to this race by being a long-forgotten magister who believes they went too far with their scholarships, and now is looking into a means to cure this corruption he believes he and others have obtained whilst also using void magic.
I feel like more void elves should be more progressive and intent to bite through the stigma that naturally shall be thrown their way to prove themselves to their faction, but most who I see are laze abouts.
Weird, I have actually had a lot of good and interesting interactions with voidies. Sure, there’s always the bad apples in ye olde Stormwind and meme characters, but overall the RP I have had with voidies was fairly decent.
Some of the situations and adventures Sainur got himself in, were with said race, and one of his best friends, while he doesn’t have that many, is a voidie.
Guess it comes down to personal experience, the character you play and his/her views and so forth.
Gives him duct tape, a banana, and vaseline instead
I think that whole “Void elves are elite squad of soldiers trained by Alleria” thing is extremely simplifying their race and is just another example of classic “if you don´t RP according to racial stereotype, you are badRP” opinion that is often present among roleplayers.
Imagine you followed this magister because he preached strong, new type of magic. Maybe you were a mage, priest, soldier (hired to protect others or going because of conviction), enchanter, tailor, smith, it doesn´t really matter. There was a reason why you joined Umbric and followed him even though he was banished from Silvermoon, because you believed in what he said, that this magic will help your people (after all, Umbric himself realizes there might be some merit to Rommath´s reaction after he finds out more about Dar´khan´s research).
So you get to this new world, shattered, but filled with energy you all sought. You start exploring it…and then you get attacked by ethereals and turned into being of Void that now constantly hears whispers driving you to madness. Only reason why you are saved is Alleria, but as a result, your only option now is to join the Alliance.
Alliance. The faction that tried to execute your people and your leader (even though it was pretty much just Garithos being Garithos, elves can see it that way), spied on you, infiltrated your homeland, killed your own people in Dalaran and races that did this are still part of this Alliance. Even worse, it´s other elves, many of whom outright despise your kind, either because you use magic (that they now use too) or because when you lost Sunwell, you made the hard choice to siphon creatures to survive.
Ask yourself this: Would you become soldier in this situation? Would you fight for people who might have killed your friends or family? Would you even have the strength to do this while some eldritch beings talk to you constantly, saying half-truths and it takes all the strength you can muster to stay sane?
And what if you left family behind? Wouldn´t you be angry at yourself for following Umbric? Wouldn´t you try to limit the whispers by not using the Void (if that is even possible)?
Granted, I doubt that people who RP Void elf barmaid or socialite in Stormwind ask these questions and I doubt that they RP Void elf civillians because it makes sense for their character based on the path they took to become Void elf, but that doesn´t mean the concept isn´t valid in the setting or that it shouldn´t be done.
100% agree, not all velves have to be the elite teleporting soldier gang.
But they do have to make themselves useful, in any capacity they can. Slacking about is no way to get that done.
Here are my three main issues with Void Elf RP…
Civilian Elves/Average Soldier Elves:
I’ve noticed that about eighty percent of Void Elf RPers play their characters as either civilians (who don’t have any discernible skills like the Void Elf tailor has) or your bog standard soldier/house guild character. Why in the world would your character be like that? The Void Elves have been trained to be an elite, self sufficient strike team and magisterium, your Elf has no reason to have just arrived with your fellow void addled kin and instantly slip away to become a Stormwind guard or your bog standard citizen.
Concerning the Quel’Thalas and the Sunwell:
A lot of Void Elf RPers, especially those who join RP/PVP campaigns, seem to constantly reinforce that they have the right to live in Quel’Thalas and visit the Sunwell, and they shall take it back and make it Alliance. No. That is not how it works. The scholars of Telogrus were already exiled even before they became Void Elves, they were aware that what they were doing was against their kingdoms rules and laws and were hiding away because of it, and Alleria -was- allowed to visit the Sunwell and visit Silvermoon because Lorthemar said it was her right, but then her presence corrupted the Sunwell. Even Alleria is aware that if she or the Void Elves took back Quel’Thalas and the Sunwell it would bring only ruin, so I don’t get why so many Void Elves are all about taking back something it’s been made clear they should not be touching ever again.
Powerful Void Elves/No Known Defects RP:
I’ve seen that many Void Elf RPers just ignore the fact that their bodies have been withered by the void and they’re essentially void tainted beings who are constantly battling against the whispers of the void trying to drive them to madness. As noted previously in this thread, as a Void Elf you aren’t as dexteritous as you once more, your control over the Void is your main boon now, and you well know that you have been turned into an aberration, and you accept that you are one.
Overall a mixture of these three things is what makes Void Elf RP generally so gutwrenchingly bad. I sincerely hope that some new Void Elf guilds pop up which actually correspond to Void Elves being a group of strike teams and elite scholars who are in a constant battle with the whispers in their heads.
