Suggestion:
Hey Blizzard! We know you love micro-transactions and store mounts. Why not sell us more character slots per account?
I’ve played the game since start TBC and i’ve run out of character slots expansions ago. I dont want another account since i want my appearances mounts and all the stuff I’ve worked for over the years.

You could always connect an account.
But please dont ask for more store things when we paye active subs.

You can have multiple wow accounts on one bnet account. All wow accounts on the bnet account share mounts and appearances.

As stated by others here you can have multiple sub accounts on your account. These sub accounts will have all your toys, achievements, titles, mounts and whatnot just like your main account.

This is an example of how it looks like. The only downside to this is you have to secure gametime for the second account by either using ingame gold or buying another sub for the second account. You will also have to get the expansion for it as well but this comes with a free boost so you can see it as a cheaper character boost. Doing this will net you another 50 character slots in total but obviously the server limit still applies.

On a sidenote, this also enables you to log in 2 accounts at the same time.
Or they could just give us extra 10-20 slots per realm, 18 is just not enough.
Well you will be able to have 50 per realm now (8.1.5). But you can still only have 50 chars overall.
That’s enough, as long as it’s all on one realm, don’t like playing on seperate realms.

What a great idea, also they should consider locking all the chests in the world and when you click them it automatically takes you to the store where you can buy keys for them.

But which would cost more? A new monthly sub until you stop playing or adding slots? I think adding slot would be cheaper and would not need another account.
It’s £120 a year then the cost of BfA, and more slots should cost less than that if it makes it to the store.

Can anyone meaningfully play 50+ characters or is it more of a collection.

No this is not helpful. First, you have to pay a 2nd sub. This is OK if you are interested in multiboxing and have the equipment to run multiple accounts at the same time, but people who want additional slots probably don’t want to multibox. They just want some more characters.
Second, you have to upgrade your other accounts to the current expansion if you want to play one of these characters in current content.
A one-time fee to unlock some more slots is a much better solution. Just look at LOTRO if you need an example.

This is still a roleplaying game, isn’t it?
Some character concepts work better with a specific race-class-gender combination, with selected professions on top.
As a long-time roleplayer and game-master I assure you, that it’s very easy to fill up 50 slots. At the end of Legion I had more than 30 characters at max level, and I completed a total of 103 Mage Tower challenges until this feature was removed.
I probably am not playing all of them equally often - but I just cannot delete characters with their unique history, story, and relations to other characters. And trust me, I already have deleted many characters. But now I have reached a point where it’s not possible.
I play since the end of 2005, BTW.

I am near my cap for characters. I’m not surprised it’s easy to generate that many characters and I have previously had more of them at max level but even on one server beyond maxing the majority I don’t really play them in any meaningful way.
I find it hard to believe that anyone can play and keep up 50 characters. Hence my question.
You don’t need to play most of them, the problem for me is they have gear in their bags and bank that is valuable and I don’t have enough empty slots on other characters for the items.
I suppose I should sell them but a lot of my characters are on low population realms and I’ve tried before, items don’t sell, even at bargain prices.

and yeah, if you dont spend at least a few hours a month on a toon, why keep it when you hitting 50 cap. having about 24 toons, 1 for each class on both factions seems adequate.
and why on earth did you do mage tower 103 times? once you complete all 36 you would know them on any alt. not to mention the time needed to gear that many toons high enough to complete them (30+ toons?) and get certain legos that in some cases were needed.
