try to buy some gear with stamina + int for more health and mana trust /calm
U can aoe grind as a mage as early as lvl 16 in westfall with arcane explosion and frost nova. u can blizz grind in redridge as early as lvl 23
I have found that pulling with wand/counterspell and then arcane explosion all of em a few times and then nova into blizzard, is way easier. Since blizzard does so low dmg that the mobs tend to reach you before they die otherwise. Also carry a few potions just in case something goes south and you have gone oom or low hp.
Try Demonology for levelling. Put talent points into Demonic Embrace, Improved Voidwalker, Improved Health Funnel, Fel Stamina, Master Demonologist and Soul Link. Just put the rest into anything you think might be useful,
Like BM for Hunters, this build is very poor for group play, ‘OK’ for PvP but very good for soloing. Most guides and many other players will tell you to go deep Affliction when levelling, but actually deep Affliction is heavily gear dependent, and it’s also kind of a glass cannon build. Sure you can efficiently dot up multiple mobs, but without the gear to back it up you’re going to have a lot of down time, plus low survivability.
Back in the Vanilla days I also went Affliction, as advised, but by the time I was around L40 I started to realise that there were many downsides to the build. I respecced Demo and all my problems vanished.
Something else that people will tell you never to do is equip +spirit gear because it has absolutely no combat benefits whatsoever - however it does boost your out of combat health and mana regeneration, which, given that you’re often going to be playing with around 50% health after life tapping to stay in the fight, having some faster regen between pulls isn’t a terrible thing.
Never choose spirit over a beneficial stat such as Intellect or spellpower, or even stamina… but at the very least eat some food that gives you some extra spirit, and you’ll be surprised at the difference it can make.
Uh what? It has combat benefits as soon as you trade casting for wanding, or any other activity that doesn’t spend mana. Not saying that makes it a good stat though.
Ok, OK, fair enough. If you use a wand to save mana spirit has some benefit.
Hi! Hope this info helps, which I’ve learnt from my Mage.
- Remember to never AOE enemies who do ranged attacks, melee only.
- Prioritise Intellect and Stamina gear only. You won’t need Spirit as you’ll most likely need to drink after every pull anyway.
- Always ensure you’re Buffed - Frost Armor, Arcane Intellect etc and full on HP/mana.
- Buy some Armor Kits (Medium or Heavy) from the auction house (pretty cheap) and put them on your armor for added defense.
- Use potions/scrolls such as Elixir of Defense, Scroll of Stamina to increase your defense.
- Only use Rank 1 Frost Nova, and pull with Wand (mana saving).
- Use Rotation:
Low HP Enemies -
Aggro Mobs, Arcane Explosion (optional), Frost Nova, get your distance, 2x Blizzard, Arcane Explosion (optional), Wand, Enemies Dead.
Higher HP Enemies -
Aggro Mobs, Arcane Explosion (optional), Frost Nova, get your distance, 2x Blizzard, Frost Nova, get your distance, 1-2x Blizzard, Enemies Dead. - When high enough level to have the spells, use Cold Snap (resets cooldowns) and Cone of Cold (another slow effect) as required/during resists.
- Ensure you’re talented correctly, see below.
These are the Talents that you NEED up to Level 22 -
Frost Warding 2/2
Elemental Precision 3/3
Improved Frost Nova 2/2
Permafrost 3/3
Improved Blizzard 3/3
Then from 23-35…
Cold Snap 1/1
Piercing Ice 3/3
Arctic Reach 2/2
Frost Channeling 3/3
Ice Block 1/1
Improved Cone of Cold 3/3
Then 35-48
(my personal choice, not as impactful for successful AOE except for Ice Barrier, but helps with higher crits)
Ice Shards 5/5
Ice Barrier 1/1 (get asap)
Shatter 5/5
Arcane Subtlety 2/2
