Anniversary Progression

Good evening everyone!
I’m not sure if this has already been asked, but I’d like to know if the Anniversary realms have progression toward WOTLK and beyond?
I just recently started playing because I liked the idea of progressing through the various expansions, but if that’s not going to be possible, I’ll focus on Cataclysm and beyond instead.
Thanks in advance, and sorry for the bother!

For now we are still in the “classic” lvl 60 part, and expect to progress to TBC in early 2026.
It is unknown - but expected - that servers progress further on to WotLK after that. Cata after WotLK? We don’t know.

First of all, thanks for replying.
I know getting a clear answer might be difficult, but I’d really like to avoid playing only to end up stuck in one expansion with no way to move forward.

The short answer is: No one knows!

My personal guess is we won’t get any info until Blizzcon next year.

I mean they will if it’s streamlined but I expect another vanilla or vanilla+ launch and cata will be a dead fish again.

You are not the first asking that question and probably not in the first thousand. The answer is not known and developers won’t reply to you personally, sorry. Most likely, this question is just undecided at that time. The only thing that’s known is that servers will progress to TBC and developers will consider the community feedback on the following actions.

There are basically three trajectories that I could envision:

  1. TBC Era. No progress to WotLK.
  2. WotLK progression. What happens next, again, is unknown. Cataclysm or WotLK Era? Same question.
  3. Do both with the option to move characters, keep characters or paid copy.

The only option that I deem as very unlikely is outright closing the servers and migrating characters to, say, Pandaria Classic or even deleting them.

So what I think will happen: as time goes on, probably after TBC launch, developers will estimate the potential popularity of TBC Era, of WotLK, probably will do some polls or gather community feedback in other ways and will decide on one of the option, based on the feedback.

So if you want to have some specific outcome, you should just clearly express your opinion and wishes, hoping that forum moderators actually do some summarization of opinions on that matter and your voice will be counted.

I, personally, think, it’ll end up with WotLK Era and not TBC Era. Although I’d prefer both and TBC Era has some very vocal supporters. I’m just not really sure if that’s enough to warrant it.

I don’t think there is any benefit of moving onto Cata lol. I think if MOP does well they will have some rushed cata experience in future servers.

Thank you all for your replies!
It wasn’t my intention to cause any trouble.
I knew there was nothing officially confirmed, and as much as I like WOTLK—I’ve played it for years, many years—I was really hoping to experience a true progression.
I’ve noticed that the Cata server isn’t exactly thriving, and I imagine Pandaria won’t fare much better.
Still, thank you all, even just for the time you took to reply.

I fully expect this server to become a forever TBC server as there are many that see TBC as the pinnacle of WoW and this gives them the option to lock at that. Just my opinion of course…

Expect and hope is not the same, I hope it will be a TBC Era server also, but I don’t expect it to happen.

Please not.

That would be great and the only reason for me to keep my sub.
I am still :face_vomiting: when I think of my beloved WotLK chars sitting in Cata and not being played anymore with horrible “talent trees” and a destroyed ugly world.

You could be wrong though. There are many people who like Pandaria a lot and might just pause during the Cata time. I think Cata was with WoD the least loved version.

Really?
I didn’t mind Cata in terms of lore.
I never really played much of Pandaria, but I’ve always been a bit skeptical about it.

I don’t think we will see Cata … ever again!

This Anniversary servers will probably stop at Wotlk which … is the way to go. Anything else beside that will be very pathetic.

Cata is the worst expansion to this point from all Classic(s).

It will take some consideration in order to release it … again.

They just announced P4 for may, by early 2026 we’ll be raiding T5 at this pace…

This is just way to fast progression for me.

ZG is just glorified UBRS. Nothing to progress there.

With BWL level or even BiS drops. It’s Blizzard’s first ever attempt at catch-up content/gear.

For the time being I decided to stay in Era. I won’t start on anniversary unless there’s a clear statement that there will be a TBC Era. I’m not interested in a rushed TBC season progressing into WotLK.

I’ve played WotLK competitively back in the day when it was new. There are a lot of things already in Wrath that I don’t like (phasing being on of them).

So if there’s going to be a TBC Era I’ll join the fun. If not, there’s good old Era.
