I’m currently in a Classic WoW guild that does BWL in well over one hour. However I’d like to try raiding in a guild who does BWL in about 30 minutes just to see if the environment is for me. I am kind of irritated sometimes by the mediocre performance that comes with a casual guild, so it’d be nice to play with players of equal skill for a change (as long as the atmosphere is chill too).
However, as I don’t have alts except very low leveled ones I don’t know how to go about trialing for them without quitting my guild beforehand. Sure you could ask but then you really tell people you’re already considering changing guild. I helped them go through a tough time and raiding with them I got tons of gear, not saying I owe them because you can also say I earned it but it still feels disloyal to go, if that makes any sense.
Pros:
I think going into AQ with my current guild will be pretty painful in terms of slow progression. So the pro will be more enjoyable and faster runs in the future.
Cons:
Going into a new guild who already set AQ priorities will mean fewer possibilities for progressing my character (i.e. the timing of a switch is never good).
Anyone who has been through a simillar thing can give some advice? Thanks.
You can try and sneak yourself into a raid with the guild you want to trial with by saying you can’t attend that raid with your current guild for that week… OR
You can just be honest. Just say “Sorry guys, I want to try joining a different guild. I’ve enjoyed my time with you, but I want to see what the game is like when I perform my best and play with others of the same mindset”.
If it doesn’t work out, you can talk to your old guildies and say “min maxing wasn’t for me” or you can join a new guild that has a similar attitude to your current. Whatever happens though, at least you’ll be able to say that you were honest and to the point.
I think I’ll ask the other guild if I can join a ZG run this week. Our BWL/MC is on the same day. The sneaking route isn’t to honorable to start with, but is especially futile if they raid at the same night and people may have you friends listed so they see you’re on. Maybe I’ll have more info that way to decide, although ZG is not as serious/telling as a BWL run.
Are you just assuming other people are below your skill level, are you always top DPS? Do you always get every available world buff/consume/flask etc while others aren’t?
If you’re tired of being in a casual guild and want to join that speedrun life then that’s fine, that’s what you enjoy.
My advice would be, depending on the atmosphere in your current guild/officer group, just approach the subject with an officer you trust - if you’re set on leaving then be upfront about it and don’t be the dick that takes a top-tier item and then gquits
Those are fair questions. Yes I’m always top, and I take DMT + Ony + ZG buff every week (and DMF when it’s available). Thanks for the advice otherwise :). I think I will make the switch eventually, but I’m kind of stalling myself on the decision. Maybe I can let them know I’ll do one more raid just to give them some time (with no loot).
Edit: with a more hardcore guild, the only point I’m curious about is consumable use. I’m not the greatest gold farmer, and that may break my bank though. Never had to in a casual guild because of already being way on top.
Currently my guild is running BWL in about 45 minutes, so we’re by no means a speedrunning guild. But because our clears are pretty fast, consumable prices are actually cheap.
Running fast without deaths means you don’t have to keep chugging consumables down. A raid night costs me around 40-50g at the most.
“Hardcore” guilds won’t be going for personal speedrun/rank records until DMF weeks - at that point you’ll be expected to flask and use most (if not all) available consumes. The weeks in between will probably just be faster versions of what you’re doing now, although you’ll still be required to use the basic, more easily farmable consumes… I don’t expect it’ll cost too much.
You are showing a very considerate approach to this, Degree, I applaud that. If you want a more serious environment in relation to raiding, I think it is perfectly fine to leave your current guild to pursue that.
It might sting for them at first, but in the long run, it is in everyones best interest.
One guild cannot excel in everything - and that is alright, even natural
Much rather that, than staying in a guild that you would not join today, if you were guildless.
That is always a good question to ask yourself:
Which type of guild would I join today, if I was guildless?
I agree with you, the sneaking route isn´t too honorable. I´d suggest to leave your current guild first, and then try to find a guild suitable for your wishes in game afterwards.
That way it does not appear as if you are ‘playing it safe’ with one foot in each camp, but instead you are really going all in on your new chapter in Azeroth.
Just a word of warning though, you seriously need to think about what you want your raiding experience to be like. It sounds like in your current guild you have a good social environment and not much stress when it comes to raiding.
You’ll find in speed running guilds it will be a lot less friendly, more pressure to perform well and not like a family. The players in these guilds all want to be the best they can and so they are together for that goal being friends and having laughs and a good time comes second. In your current guild you will always be a valued member of the raid team but in a speed running guild your just another number, easily replaceable due to being in one of the best guilds on the server.
I thought I’d just warn you as I know a lot of people who have made a similar decision and cut ties with their guilds and friends in those guilds only to regret it. Personally I’m in a semi hardcore guild but we still share a lot of laughs during raid times and know when to be serious I could easily be in the best guild on the server but I like to feel valued and I value the bonds I have made with my guildies.
Speaking as an officer in a casual raid guild we always welcome people’s opinions when they want to move on, we don’t speed run but we have fun along the way and improve what we can each week. It works for us but not for all. Like others have said just give your officers/GM a message and talk to them about it. If your a valued member and they don’t want you to leave it could help them push everyone else a bit more to run the raids faster:) it’s a little annoying when a regular player/raider leaves unannounced so a heads up is always nice.
Even when people do move on to faster/more min-max guilds we usually keep their Alts and they continue to raid with us on the alts.
I have thought about this, and still haven’t decided yet but:
the guild I’m looking at is not super hardcore, it would just have 1 raid team instead of those super guilds that make you a number and have competition among raid teams etcetera. Plus I know some of their members and their GM a little, they seem nice
the main problem with my current guild is also the attendance now is lacking a little and I’m not sure they can handle a 2-day schedule even. I feel like I’m taking a little risk staying with them. It’s like risk-reward of taking the risk but keeping the friendships going (in another guild it’s still harder to keep in touch and stuff).
Just be open about it: say it outright in your discord: I am applying to xyz and if they accept me, I’m leaving. Thank you all for the great times we had together, but I desire a more “hardcore” experience and will endeavour to do so. Or somethimg like that. You don’t owe them anything, despite how it might feel. You play for your own enjoymenyt, first and foremost.
And lemme tell you, clearing BWL in under 40 min does feel amazing. So does clearing AQ40 on the first night!
My advice, just be open about what you want. Tell your guild you’re not satisfied and you feel a different guild would be a better place for you. It might make them mad, but you’re not doing anything wrong as long as you’re being civil about it. Being honest and straightforward about what you want is always better.
If you have an issue with running it over 1h you will not like guilds that do it in around 30m. Thing is to do it that fast you will have to get buffs and they can take a day of planning depending on the server and how nasty the ganking is around Blackrock the island and a few key locations.
Don’t feel bad for old guild, if you go with another guild on their run to feel if it’s better for you. Our MT with TF just stopped playing, 2 weeks after he got it, cause he was bored, and put us quite a bit back, by not saying anything.
Always remember, irrespective of timing, people will always come and go, and if the guild leadership is in denial of this, thats on them and not you.
You pay to play this game for yourself and not directly for others’s happiness…
That’s rough though, your MT with TF… I plan on telling them in advance and doing 1 raid with them still without loot to help but anyone leaving is going to be felt to a degree. Still if your MT told you 1 week in advance it would not have mattered in terms of managing your roster, unless you mean you could have recruited a tank in the meantime? I know sometimes tanks reply fast to recruitment because there are limited tank spots available and possibly fury warriors seeing their chance to get gear easier.
I am the other tank and we have a few others, but with 0 binding drops in months (8 to be exact), he could have mentioned he was looking to stop, we’d have given binding to someone who planned to stay. Either way, some communication is better than none.
Personally I’m planning to stop playing myself, cause it’s just hard to stay focused at the moment, I’ll give the guild a months notice, and be loot locked, but help em with raids till my last day. Just helps them transition and not feel like I’ve dropped them.
