So! Question and discussion.
I’ve noticed that there are many Archmages around, many of whom are also accepted and acknowledged, but I’ve never seen anyone with the title Grand Warlock be taken seriously as such.
My question is then, why accept one but claim the other is forever out of a player character’s reach, are the two not basically just meaning the same thing in each field? A title given to exceptionally powerful casters.
And on the discussion side of things, what other titles do you perhaps think are too much? I realize many will rightly say “Depends on how it’s done.”
But I am curious about what you think is the way to go.
Far as we see on NPCs, Archmages are all over the place. Hell, there’s probably almost two dozen in Dalaran alone, nevermind the amount of them you see outside of the mage-city.
Grand Warlock, however, is a title we only see a rare few times as far as I know.
Seems to me that they’re not just a different version of the same thing.

I believe generally there are more mages than warlocks, so that can be a reason too.
And Arcane has been practiced for longer than Fel by majority of magicians, perhaps these two can be of the reasons too.
There’s far less formal structure to the workings of warlocks. Titles hold less sway - power and knowledge probably speak for themselves.

I envision Grand Warlock as a title one claims for oneself at one point or another, although perhaps a little prematurely in some cases.

This is also a good point. Plus, Warlocks aren’t generally considered trustworthy or even good people. Openly advertising oneself as not only a Warlock, but a supposed Mega-Lock? Subtlety goes bye-bye and scrutiny is your life now.
Grand Warlock usually is a title suited to positions in cults or occult groups so they really more looked down upon rather than respected amongst the populace. Afterall they’re warlocks and they do dark stuff.

I don’t think even the Council of Six use titles… Netherlord was thrown in out of nowhere for Legion, and before then Warlock titles were so few and far between that it wasn’t really considered noting.
Nelox worded it pretty solidly; the types of ranks you’d find are typically cultish.

Doesn’t Archmage have a set criteria that a person has to meet before they are granted the title of Archmage?
Something about mastery over 5 of the 7 schools?
Might be criss-crossing my knowledge

That was for an Archmage of the Kirin Tor according to the old RPGs. Mastery of two schools of magic, and advanced abilities in another three of them. But back then they were only like … 25 Archmages of the Kirin Tor or so.
Edit: In my headcanon, Archmage is simply a title for a powerful, old and learned mage. However, merely being an old, relatively powerful mage does not get you the title automatically. As I view it as mainly an academic title, you somehow have to present your own research.

Pretty much what people have already said;
Archmages are a known quantity, we know (more or less) what it means and who bestows the title, there’s a formal system that backs it, while ‘Grand Warlock’ is just one of many grandiose and most often self-proclaimed titles carried by people who flunked out of Mage school and got hooked on the green goo, and has no real meaning beyond “A larger variant of ordinary Warlocks”.

Does it matter? The title Archmage has lost its meaning in lore and in RP. In lore because everyone and their grandma is an Archmage now a days apparently…
And in RP because everyone and their Grandma’s and their grandkids( to many 18 year old Archmage around)…
(This also counts for Archdruid…)
Atleast titles like Grand-Warlock, and some others still hold some manner of mystery and awe.

If everyone is an archmage, no one is an archmage.
yeah, this is a bit of a thing.
Realistically, I don’t take 9 out of 10 archmage players seriously- that, however, is connected to the fact that said 9 out of 10 archmages are either humans below the age of 30 or humans who use magic very recklessly. There’s more mage RPers, and fittingly, they get a little carried away with titles and the power their character could have (despite being in their twenties and not Jaina or Khadgar) so it’s more likely for them to take on a title that seems fairly grand, if widely spread.

Hierarchically, Warlock ranks below Arch-mage, separated by Wizard and Master-Wizard.
As a Warlock you do, however, have access to the Mages’ Council.
There’s no such thing as Grand Warlocks.
A really simple google search would prove you wrong on this, my friend.
One example was already linked here, and there’s several others, too.
