Will there be X-realms?
How will the battle groups look like?
Pretty sure it’s said it will be crossrealm bgs? And if I would have to guess I doubt it will be any battle groups.
They did battle groups back in the days too combat server imbalance. So my guess would be they are doing something similar this time around as well.
They implemented it also for the upcoming arena implementation in burning crusade, back then.
But there’s no guarantee they’ll do it for classic. I hope they will, but there’s no guarantee.
There’s not even a guarantee they won’t just copypasta retail’s matchmaking system, and not even include the region locks (trust me, you do not want that to be excluded).
This is what I worry about. They have not really said anything except I believe that they will be crossrealm.

what is a battle group?
Battle groups where groups of servers in bundles of 4-8? if I dont remember too wrong. And at first it was as a reply for the demand too fix queue times. as queues where terrible when BGs first came, because of server imbalance or low numbers of active players. Then the system was used for arena in later time.
But! as someone stated above. That they did this back then does not mean they will do it now. It’s just what I hope for.

Battle Groups were introduced by patch 1.12.1
Realms were grouped by time zone/location into Battle Groups. Realms in the same group did PVP together.

Battlegroups, maybe. Crossrealm, definitely. 11:56, roughly.
Hmm. I thought BattleGroups was still a thing, but apparently not, they disappeared a few years ago. I’ve been away for so long 
I guess as the new BattleGround tech don’t use the Battlegroups concept, so probably no Battlegroups then!?

Why go to the trouble of trying to match up servers with faction balance when they can just slap all servers together and be done with it?
Then again… I wouldn’t put it past Blizz to just throw together a few realms into battlegroups and call it a day, faction balance be damned.
I really hope they’ll include battlegroups at the very least (best would be no xrealm imo, for the social benefits of the mere-exposure effect and proximity principle which makes it easier to work together and feel more immersed overall) but check the amount of servers in the other language regions.
Do you think they’ll leave those servers on their own?
Because back in 1.12, with the implementation of battlegroups, they never merged the matchmaking to include realms meant for other languages.
It wasn’t until MoP that they removed the region locks for the matchmaking in PvP.
And it has effectively destroyed the desire of EU-English players to queue solo, for the most part.
EU-English is the largest region in the EU client. Yet it queues less than other smaller regions these days, due to the extreme amount of exploits and bad netcoding on the servers that plagued BGs for so long. Some exploits are still possible, to this day.
