Blizzard Official Role Play Naming Policy

Hello Argent Dawn!

I have seen quite often a discussion popping up regarding discussion about the naming policy and I just found the ‘‘Official’’ naming policy and just thought it could be nice to know about since I have noticed quite some people have asked about it the past years.

I personally think it is good that they have set up a naming policy and that they are giving few examples as well of ‘‘bad’’ names so to say.

Lmao “Robotman”. This name is so bad it should be illegal on any server, not just RP ones.
On a serious note, it’s good to have some clarification. I feel like people just guess what’s right and wrong these days, so articles like this are really helpful.

Your name also falls under that rule as bad.

I suppose I could sound like a teenage edgelord like yourself

It’s literally stated in the rules you just said are good for clarification.

  • Names that consist of multiple words (For example: Inyourface, Welovebeef, Howareyou, Sixtyseventy)

Mine is a name already used in game by 2 NPCs as last names. - Mine is also the last name of my character.

This character isn’t on Argent Dawn anyway.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

Couldn’t check, you have your profile hidden for some reason.

Then why do you lurk here?!

Because I have a character on Argent Dawn, just not this one?

  • Names that reference well known people, characters, brands, places, or icons (For example: Britneyspears, Austinpowers, Mcdonalds, Georgewashington, Newyork)

What, no Legolas?

While not always the case, I’ve found from just browsing the forums for a while, that people who go out of their way to set their profile to hidden tend to have a reason for it, and quite often that is because they’ve posted less unsavoury things elsewhere.

As for a on-topic thing. It’s both bad and good. The naming policy has been around for a while and hasnt changed much, so that is all good. But back a few years ago we did have a specific roleplaying policy/behaviour on rp realms, which has now been generalised into the overall behavioural Code of Conduct.

But, there is also the issue that the majority of people who do use names not suitable on AD wont really read this anyway. A large portion of them are in the crowd of “Lol roleplayers are nerds and should be hounded whenever possible”.

RIP my Mechagnome character concept.

Mechaman perhaps?

I like that one because it reminds me of a megaman villain.

Does the naming policy even matter anymore?
I mean most RPers use TRP or MRP. It displays your character name and not the toon’s name. I can name my toon, Indebutt, but have his TRP name him John Lionheart. Everyone with TRP will see his name is Lionheart.

Of course it matter because.

  1. Not everyone use a RP addon such as MRP/TRP3.

And 2. It is the game rules so.

Basically what our Darkshire lurking friend has said, TRP has made this policy largely irrelevant. I still always make my characters with either their first or last name then use TRP to fill in the rest, most of my characters are named with their surname.

Just because an addon exist, it doesnt excuse people not following the rules set out by Blizzard.

Im also under the personal belief that RP addons should not be mandatory, and it does make things look a little nicer when the person im rping with isnt named “xxDestroyerstabberxx” ooc.

Edit: another personal opinion, but I think it shows just a little more effort/care to take the what…10 seconds extra time to think up a roleplay-suitable name rather than any random dumb thing.

a friend of mine had a regular ordinary rp name (i’m not namedropping it) and he got it forcefully changed.

later i see something relating crudely to sexual acts and they can run around just fine with zero reprocussions.

blizz actually dont give a remote toss about the roleplaying scene of their game so why would these rules ever be enforced. so i say name yourself whatever you want, you’re clearly never gonna get into trouble over it.
