Hey Blizzard,
I’ve been a long-time fan of WoW Classic and a huge supporter of the vision you set out for the game. I think most of us who love the Classic experience are invested in the long-term health of the game and want it to thrive. That’s why I’m here to talk about an issue that’s become more pressing in recent times: layers in Un’Goro Crater.
During the anniversary celebrations for Classic WoW, you promised to reduce layers in the game, specifically mentioning that it would improve the experience and make the world feel more alive, with less artificial segregation of players. Un’Goro Crater, a key area in Classic, has suffered from this layer issue more than most, and it’s really starting to take away from the immersion and community aspect that Classic is all about.
Right now, the layers in Un’Goro Crater are still present, and the promises made about addressing them seem to have been forgotten or deprioritized. As many of us are aware, layer overpopulation hurts the player experience by breaking immersion and making world interactions (like world PvP, farming, and questing) feel disconnected. The original promise of “wargames with layers” seemed like an exciting step forward, but without proper implementation, it feels more like a broken promise.
If this issue isn’t addressed soon, I’m worried it will hurt the long-term health of the game. Classic WoW thrives on its community, on world interactions, and on the social dynamics that come from being on a server with a more cohesive population. If players start feeling like they’re in separate worlds because of layering, it could contribute to the death of the experience we all love.
Please consider this message a constructive appeal to follow through on your commitment. If layers are not reduced or reworked as promised, I fear we’ll be missing out on the magic that makes WoW Classic special.
We’re all invested in this game, and we want to see it thrive, not just for a year or two, but for the long run. Please do what’s necessary to make Un’Goro Crater, and the rest of the world, feel alive and truly immersive once again. Thank you for your time, and I hope you’ll take this into serious consideration.
I wholeheartedly agree with the points made in this post. The layering in the Crater really undermines the experience of Classic WoW. It creates a sense of separation between players, making the world feel less connected and less “alive.” The whole point of Classic is the social interaction, the world feeling populated, and the challenge of working together to take on difficult content—layering makes that feel disconnected.
Players are spread out across multiple layers, and while it might solve the immediate problem of overcrowding, it ends up fragmenting the community. You end up in a situation where you’re never truly experiencing the same world as other players. This is especially frustrating in high-density areas like the Crater, where the whole point of the zone is to be part of a dynamic, player-driven environment.
Reducing the layers would bring back that sense of shared world and make the experience more immersive. Blizzard promised a return to a more “authentic” experience in Classic, and having too many layers feels like a break from that promise. I really hope they listen to the feedback and make a change that prioritizes player interaction and the overall feel of the world.
