Blizzcon Lore Interviews with Steve Danuser & Morgan Day

Didn’t see this discussed anywhere yet, so I figured I’d make a thread about it since it has some interesting stuff.

  • Arbiter sent souls to the Maw “occasionally” for souls that are “irredeemable”

  • Drust tapped into “death-centered Druidism” and “darkness”; Ardenweald as a way to tap into this, Druidism as “decay that Fall and Winter represent”, Druidism is “about the cycle between life and death”

  • Thros is on the “precipice” of the Shadowlands, “not quite” in the realm of death but touched by it, on the precipice of a lot of those confluence, “not fully” in the Shadowlands

  • Gorak Tul did not speak to any Eternal One he reached out to or tapped into, he just delved in a lot, including the Nightmare “which if you think about, it just another variation of that cycle and that balance, just the Void-touched version of that”

  • re: Necromancy; using Thoras Trollbane who was dead for a while, perhaps a Kyrian, what happens upon turning into a Death Knight? Normally in WoW, beings are born, life is tying their soul to their body, building up anima, but in the case of necromancy/undeath, it is death that is tying the soul to the form; different rules but a similar principle. Time is perceived differently, not about measuring time, in the Shadowlands. Necromancy brings back their actual spirit, not an echo or copy. Even if the soul is pulled back, it still has a tether to the Shadowlands, almost like a “second life” or “continuation” with the tether to the Shadowlands on pause; the undead are a very small number in the cosmic scheme of things

  • It’s an interesting question to think if the things they did in the second existence of undeath might affect their judgement in the afterlife

  • In Maldraxxus, when a fresh soul arrives come into arena with Margraves watching showing their might and proving themselves, Margraves pick what souls they want with the Primus settling disputes/ties between Margraves. Maldraxxus is a meritocracy, proving yourself every day, best souls climbing the ladder; based on victories and losses their bodies change respectively. Draka and Vashj worked their up very quickly, shaped their flesh in specific ways.

  • Teaser for Grimoire of the Shadowlands book: book was a lot of fun to write, written from the perspective of a broker, cataloguing for his cartel information of Azerothian funeral rites, influence of mortals on shadowlands, histories of shadowlands, observing the importance of Azerothian heroes in the cosmos

  • There is a chapter at the end of the book where the narrator delves into the nature of the universe and the mysteries of the first ones and the efforts of the brokers to delve into it, and a unique perspective on the cosmology, another perspective of the cosmic forces

  • 6 of 8 bosses of Tazavesh are in the Veiled Market, there’s an encounter in the post office of the Brokers (lots of portals), lots of delving into Broker culture

  • How does Aucindoun/Auchenai work with the Shadowlands, were they circumventing the fate of souls? Not a major plot point of shadowlands, but the Watchers responsibilities includes “wait a minute, is there another cosmic force interfering this soul”, example Bridenbrad in Northrend where the Naaru intercedes and claims the soul over the Kyrian Watchers; religions in cultures can cause this via the powers they channel and beliefs, like the Eredar/Draenei being able to tether souls and temporarily keep them from crossing over

  • Portal Rooms largely are gameplay; entering the Shadowlands isn’t easy, Griftah had trouble entering, average citizen could not just enter the Shadowlands

  • beings bound to the cosmic realms cannot on a whim enter reality, takes a lot of effort

  • Gem used for Shalamourne, what was it, where did it come from? When we see the Jailer move his hand to open the portal and take out the crystal, that was something Sylvanas hadn’t seen before and caught her eye. The Jailer has his own private stock of powerful things, like souls or other forms of power. Also safe to say, he didn’t choose something at random, put in a very specific thing into that forge, and the story of what that is and what it means we’ll revisit as the story continues to develop

  • Domination magic was used to imprison the Jailer to the Maw, which the Jailer learned and refined to the point he was able to spread his influence outside of the case. Case in point, he used domination magic to suppress Anduin’s will.

  • Domination magic was also how the Jailer intended to use the Lich King as a weapon on Azeroth. However while the Jailer was able to influence Ner’zhul and Arthas, they both retained their free will and thus were largely in control of their own actions.

  • The Sanctum of Domination is also where the Jailer places those who have earned his ire. One person who has earned the Jailer’s ire is Ner’zhul, who has been confirmed to return in Shadowlands.

  • Another character returning in Shadowlands is Garrosh. The context is currently unknown, but Blizzard has gone on record by mentioning that they will respect his character arc. They also pointed out how souls who repent in Revendreth are sent to other realms, hinting that Garrosh could leave Revendreth for another realm.

  • There is more story to tell with Yrel and the Lightbound.

  • Velen was once a individual completely blindly devoted to the Light but his perspective has changed since Xe’ra and the end of the Burning Legion.

  • The First Ones created the cosmos, such as the Light and the Void.

  • One of the most proficient in the use of Domination Magic was the Primus, who is a Master Runesmith

  • Zovaal could not Dominate Bolvar

  • There was still a sliver of Arthas/his good left that is what prevented the Scourge from rampaging across Azeroth

  • Anduin broke free for a moment, Domination magic is “suppression” rather than control.

And here’s more in-depth answers I was provided with, since the ones in the MMO-Champion post are very heavily condensed:

Q: Did the Arbiter ever send anyone directly to the Maw?
A: In the times before, when the Arbiter functioned as intended, she would occasionally send those souls judged to be irredeemable directly to the Maw. […] Butvastly, it was most people going other afterlives.

~ ~ ~

Q: Does the Drust threat in Ardenweald predate the Drust we faced in BFA? If so, how old is the Drust as an entity?
A: The Drust were a people that were alive at one time on the place that would be Kul Tiras, but it’s that that darkness they tapped into, that death-centered form of druidism, that at the time of BFA, that was a novel thing because druidism was traditionally tied to the powers of life and the Emerald Dream. Ardenweald was a natural place to explore that story further. […] We learned that druidism is about more than just life and growth but about that cycle between life and death. The Drust went heavily into the dark aspects of that. […] The idea that Thros was a realm not quite in the Shadowlands but was one certainly touched by it was an interesting story to tap into.

~ ~ ~

Q: Will we learn of any specific or force from Thros? Was there a higher being Gorak Tul reached out to?
A: There was no other Eternal One that he was specifically tapping into. It was them tapping into that force with such intensity that made Thros teeter on the brink there, and there’s overtones of the Nightmare as well, which is another variation of that cycle and balance when the Void touched a version of that. Thros was kind of on the precipice of a lot of those confluences.

~ ~ ~

Q: Do victims of Necromancy retain any memories from their time in the Shadowlands? What about old memories they may have cast aside after their death? (Example given: Ascended Kyrian)
A: Coming back to life via necromancy is like a mirror to the natural way of things, where a soul is born, it builds up anima, etc. And normally it’s the power of life that binds the soul to that body, and necromancy is when the power of death is doing that. […] This is kind of ephemeral, the way I think of it is even if that soul is pulled back, and it kind of forgets what happened to it over the course of the Shadowlands, it’s still kinda got that tether to what’s going on to its existence in the Shadowlands. Since time is not really a factor there, you can think of it as almost a second life or continuation with the Shadowlands side almost “on pause” or waiting for that tether to reconnect them to that fate. […] Undeath is a very small thing on a cosmic scale, despite how much we see of it on Azeroth with the Forsaken and Scourge, the vast majority of souls who pass through go to the Shadowlands and stay there. […] It’s an interesting question as to whether this might affect their judgment in the Shadowlands.

~ ~ ~

Q: What happens when a fresh soul arrives in Maldraxxus? How can they get a body? Do they choose one?
A: The way it was supposed to work, it was still souls coming into that arena that you see, and Margraves would see what they had to offer and say, “I like that one. It should come to my house” and maybe they might argue over which house it goes to, and the Primus could go, “Alright, that one goes here, that one goes there.” […] Maldraxxus is very much a meritocracy. Your achievements in life were kind of the bar to entry, but now it’s like starting a new job where you’re starting fresh and have to prove yourself again, today and every day. You can imagine someone arriving and being given a very basic form they can inhabit, and based on their victories, getting upgrades or downgrades to that body. Where there’s people like Vashj and Draka who climbed the ladder very quickly, they were in a position to say, “I’m going to start shaping my flesh this way”. If you’re successful, you’re given some latitude to decide.

Q: Teaser for the upcoming book, Grimoire of the Shadowlands?
A: It’s written from the perspective of a broker, writing it for his cartel, talking about things ranging from Azerothian funeral rites, to the influence mortals have had on the Shadowlands, and his perspective on the various realms of death and the events that have unfolded. He makes note of how people from this Azeroth world keep coming up time and again despite all these other worlds existing. There is a chapter in the end that delves into the mysteries of the universe and the nature of the First Ones, and talks about the Broker’s efforts to uncover those secrets. He presents another perspective into their views on the cosmology.

~ ~ ~

Q: How does the Eredar & Draenei soul magic effect the Shadowlands? (i.e. Auchindoun) Were they circumventing the fate of souls?
A: With the Kyrian watchers who decide when a soul is ready to go to the Shadowlands, one of the factors is “is there some force that is tethering them to the mortal plane” or some force that is interfering with the process of this. [Example given: Naaru intervening to save Bridenbrad’s soul to spare him from undeath.] […] Those races don’t really think of it in terms of, “I’m stopping these Kyrian Watchers from claiming a soul” so much as they just see things from their own perspective, keeping those souls from passing on, tying them to devices, etc.

Q: Regarding Portals in Stormwind/Orgrimmar - Can anyone just travel into the Shadowlands? Can denizens of the Shadowlands travel to Azeroth?
A: We always put portals by necessity for gameplay reasons, but by and large, those portals are meant to be a gameplay device. But some characters, like Griftah, have crossed over, but think of the fiction there as they would’ve had to gone to some trouble to make that happen. Like they would have had to talk to the Death Knights, or maybe some particular mages who would’ve figured things out based on what Jaina has been doing, just to get the help to open a portal to that place. […] We don’t need to narrativize every bit of that, but there is a barrier to entry. On the other side, beings that are bound to the cosmic realms cannot, just on a whim, come through. Once you are bound to those realms, it takes a concerted effort to cross through. That’s why things like with Legion invasions it’s not just been, “Let’s hop on the bus and head over there” it’s “How do we get the gateways open? We need to use the well of eternity or this temple to Elune because it’s attuned to the Avatar of Sargeras, etc”

~ ~ ~

Q: What is the gem used to forge Kingsmourne?
A: That was something Sylvanas hadn’t seen before, so without getting too spoilery, it seems the Jailer has his own stock of powerful things whether those or souls or other forms of power, but it’s also safe to say, that as deliberate as the Jailer is, he didn’t choose something at random. He chose a very specific thing to put into that sword. We will revisit that story as it continues to develop.

and

“How does Aucindoun/Auchenai work with the Shadowlands, were they circumventing the fate of souls? both were particularly interesting, especially since the former finally gives some kind of an official statement about whether portal rooms actually are a thing (to the extent some consider them to be anyway). It also seems like some religions can keep souls from getting slamdunked into the maw/afterlife.

I’m SO GLAD we can finally put this thing to bed.

Also “Domination Magic” lol.

I’ll admit I’ve gotten into some heated debates about this already, but to me the impact here on us roleplayers should be negligable. Many of our characters definitively cannot be classified as average citizens, given that most of us RP someone with an aptitude in magic or combat.

Obviously for people who do roleplay actual citizens this applies, but I’ve already seen this used to try and discredit people who want to RP in the Shadowlands and I’m not about that.

We do know it isn’t impossible to enter the Shadowlands (as we see with Griftah, Ol’ Emma, etc.), but it probably doesn’t happen via the portal room™ judging by this response.

I think that’s the correct stance to take. It’s the one I’ll be taking and the one I hope others take too.

lol yeah he’s just so cool+great

It’s not Chains of Domination, it’s Chains of Ion.

But seriously, what a dumb form of magic they had to come up with here.

We joke about the writers having the hots for Sylvanas, but it’s clear the writers are really horny for the Jailer.

next to bondage and sadism magic of course.

C’thun redemption arc.

So… what are we to see about Garrosh? Why am I seeing at least one notable character going back to Azeroth?

Seeing how much Sylvanas doubts herself, Garrosh inervenes at the end of the expansion, apologise for not trusting her in life and takes her place in the maw/punishment, allowing her to return to Azeroth instead to continue her redeemed new path.

He’ll probably get his “redemption” in Revendreth and then get sent to Maldraxxus or wherever his father is.

I can just imagine some mad, crazy twist.
