BLZBNTAGT00000840: Something went wrong with a file

Copying from US forums: https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/blizzard/t/unable-to-update-games-with-error-blzbntagt00000840/53536

As of today (1/14/25) I am no longer able to complete game updates on the Battle.net Launcher, with the update terminating with a BLZBNTAGT00000840 error. This seems to be exclusively impacting Linux/Steam Deck users judging by reports in a thread on the WoW Customer Support forum (which I can’t link to due to posting permissions, unfortunately) and on external forums like Reddit. This problem doesn’t seem to be exclusive to WoW as any BLIZZARD game update will generate this error.

This is a problem since yesterday and has been now for ~14 hours. I want to be reimbursed for the day lost so far, and more if it continues on.

Same problem here :frowning:

Same here (Steam Deck user) updating is currently stuck at 97%. Scan and repair did nothing. I found a reddit thread that say to delete the _retail_ folder fixes it, but I have so much configuration done for the Steam Deck that I do not have the balls to delete the retail folder. If someone is more brave then please report

Same for me on fedora.
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling but crashes at about 380MB mark.
Tried uninstalling battle net but can not install it again due to an error at about 97% mark.

Im using steam proton for the installation

Retail folder delete did not work for me

Removed retail since I don’t use add-ons or anything. The install stopped at 398.25MB, same as before.

I fix it! I change battlenet launcher runer option on Lutris to Proton 9.0. Next after sucessfully update I change back to default win-ge-8-26.

The game launches normally now. :v:

PS. SteamDeck usere here.

I’m using Steam, changed from Experimental to Proton 9.0-4, but it still stops at 398.25MB with the same error.

I can confirm that switching to Proton 8.0.5 for example allows the update to be finished. Then I switched back to 9.0.4 and was able to play! Thanks for the tip AnyBunny

Brand new M4 Mac - same issue. Battle Net won’t install, fails at 90%.
Nothing else installed on the Mac, it’s literally the first thing I tried to put on it.

You won’t be reimbursed. The game was never intended to be on Linux systems.

Do you work for them or something? Giving off hall monitor vibes.

I am also having issues today under Linux but I agree - we won’t be reimbursed, it’s a fact. And to pretend otherwise is just silly. WoW is not officially supported under Linux. If it was then it’d be a different story.

I managed to get WoW Classic to install by fiddling around with the runners - failed install in wine-ge so i went into proton-ge to update bnet, then went back into wine-ge, uninstalled and then reinstalled under proton. Frustratingly though, I am facing the same error whilst trying to install retail - even though classic now is working again as it did last night. Super weird issue and I do wonder what has caused it.

Are you able to recognize somebody commenting when they are 100% relaxed and objectively looking at something, vs. somebody making a thread in the heat of the moment, having to write something that makes them cool off?

Do you get the distinction between the two? You must be a mmo-champion frequent, you come across as idiotic as them, completely missing the entire point just to pile on and grand stand. Worthless.

…That is a level of crazy you run far away from.

Anyway, unhinged ranting aside, hopefully this will be fixed soon.

Yep, thanks for confirming it. You are exactly that person.

It seems after using proton to install the game switching back to the default wine-ge fixed the issue for me.

Linux mint 22 cinnamon and wine-9.0 (Ubuntu 9.0~repack-4build3) - cannot update. There are so MANY linux users, Bli$$ schould really test the game on linux before update. Well my AQ40 raid won’t wait for my - thanks Bli$$!
