I run a guild that is rank ~250 world, and we have assigned crafters for each legendary type. So 1 tailor, 1 blacksmith, 1 leatherworker, and 1 enchanter (to enchant stuff).
So my tailor already has 4 slots on rank 4 (the slots we need), and the blacksmith can reach there soon too, with a bit of gold, maybe 1mil from GB, he can max out 3 slots at rank 4.
When I look at Leatherworking, I need to craft 4 slots (leather chest, shoulders) and (mail helm shoulders). To do this, we need 4050 Heavy Callous Hide, or 40500 Callous Hide. This is after telling my DH he is getting cloak instead of wrists, and my druid not getting anything above rank 1.
SILVERMOON AND RAVENCREST AH COMBINED IS NOT ENOUGH FOR MY GUILD.
How is this ok and not getting fixed within the first day? It would cost atleast 6 million to buy out both of those realms callous hide and even then it wouldnt be enough to craft legendaries for 1 guild…
I dont understand how no one is complaining about this because it is absolutely absurd how rare callous hide is compared to how much of it you need. Callous Hide (and how much of it you need) is almost 10x more rare/expensive than other professions and its not even the only material required.
Hello there, thanks for the post. I wondered if i am the only one who thinks that this is ridiculous. I planned to create my own legendary this addon - so i leveled up differnet chars to do all by myself. basically i told myself; well i “just” need the leggings right? For those who are unfamiliar to the topic generally, here is the calculation of what it takes to get “just” the Leather Legging rank 4 recipe - you have to do this separately for every single item:
Heavy Callous Hide: 1110
Soul Dust: 370
Heavy Desolate Leather: 960
Desolate Leather: 3775
Vendor-Shards: 888
Let’s say it this way: Just the shards alone are vendor items that cost you 94k, sold from the cheaper vendors and the leather drops once every 2-3 minutes, if you are extremely effective. getting rank 4 recipes is extremely ridiculous.
If i just buy it it costs me between 3.5 and 4 million gold on nozdormu -> Just To Get The Rank 4 recipe of one single piece
I mean the shards themselves are not super ridiculous as other professions also require them. My guild has already done tailoring to rank 4 on 4 slots. It cost us just under 1mil gold for that. The issue specifically is the Heavy Callous Hide that you mentioned which is FAR worse than any other profession (at least 5x worse) which is what I am trying to bring attention to because this HAS to be fixed/nerfed so that its more accessible and easier to reach. Callous Hide either has to drop more often (easier option), or lower the material cost of each of the legendary base item callous hide requirements.
Everything is ridiculous about leatherworking and skinning.
Getting to R4 is so expensive that you think “hey what ever imma go farm” and nope, after more than 2 hours you have not even 20 heavy hide. Just a joke.
out of curiosity… why not just buy the legendary base items via the AH? all of them (besides rank4 which is weeks away) are going for below crafting cost. rather than spending the time to farm mats or spending millions for leveling crafting i would just buy the items and move on.
Its kind of the same thing as renting a house vs buying one. You can rent a place for cheaper but you get nothing in return except the item. Buying the place gives you eventual return for a little more investment.
I have several people leveling alts for bosses like Denathrius mythic and one of those is hunters. Itd be cheaper for us to level up a base item than buy 4 now, then 3 later and what not. Especially as the expansion goes on.
Thank you! I was coming to this forum to comment about this specifically. My guild and my team are very casual so i decided i’d farm out rank 2-3 leather and mail items for my less active teammates.
For rank 2 in 1 slot i’m looking at maybe 18 hours farming? Looking at 10ish hides an hour.
For comparison, the mail hands on my (pretty small but i’m guessing this isn’t an anomaly) realm cost 250k for the single rank 2 that’s available via the AH. There’s 6 rank 4 cloth versions which are going for 40k.
This is nuts, realistically i’m not losing raid places but i’m still not happy about my cloth teammates having 3ish ilvls on me by virtue of being clothies.
The proportions that they drop are bit off. I have decided to make money on these bad boys as they sell like sunflower seeds - but I’m struggling getting the hides - tested couple of farming spots in bastion just to be bit disappointed.
It is a great opportunity to make money with Proffessions - With 1k Leather I got 10 Heavy Callous Hide and 100 normal ones. Took me hour and half or so.
If I skip rank 2 and rank 3 legos on my server, I can spend only 350k on buying my rank 4 boneshattered helm. Two wow tokens, so what 40€, sounds like a fair price for an item essential for my ingame power. /s
After farming for some days, came to the forums to express my discontent about this as well.

The heave hides drop rate is extremely low and while simple hides are more bearable to obtain - you then need TEN of them to convert into a single heavy hide.
To then having to craft FIFTEEN vessels to obtain the next rank.
This is completely disproportional to the other crafting systems. Vessels regarding leatherworking are 2-3 times more expensive to obtain just because of this hides crap.
How is this a thing?
I understand Leatherworking is intended to be more complex with the various materials involved. But this is just insane.
Either:
Increase the drop rate of heavy hides dramatically;
Reduce the amount of hides required for vessels;
Reduce the crafting cost of heavy hides considerably
Whatever you choose to do, address this already. This shouldn’t have made to live.
Certainly explains why base cloth leggos barely go for 2k, whilst base leather/mail go for 17 to 34k.
This issue was brought up on the beta forums months ago but was soundly ignored.
Someone skinned a thousand corpses then did the numbers on how long it would take to reach rank 4 of one craft, it came to hundreds of hours of farming to be able to do it, which is just ridiculous.
I really don’t understand how this made it past Beta.
Leatherworking is crafting for 6 different classes, double of what Tailoring or Blacksmith crafts for. It’s heavily dependant on a single mat, that has a low drop rate, and where majority of best farming spots are heavily contested by other players. Other gathering professions can gather 4-5x more mats in the same time, just by going around the world, and are then used in lesser quantanties.
None of the other professions have as such hard time ranking up their pieces, which then translates into a bigger problem when we can only sell the rank1-2 pieces at a loss. This might happen to every crafting profession, but in Tailoring and Blacksmith, the loss is around 500-600g per piece, while in Leatherworking you might end up losing more than 3-4k per piece.
Just an example, on my server, Callous Hide goes for 220g per piece; to craft UmbrahideLeggings rank 1you require 15 Heavy Callous Hide, which is ~33k gold…but then you can’t sell it above 28k, so it’s a 5k loss in just one piece…if we craft 15 to rank, we lose 75k. Even rank 2 pieces are losing money right now, only rank 3 and above are making money.
The issue here is that why am I going to waste 36k on rank1, and then 60k on rank2, when I can farm Soul Ash for 2weeks to craft a rank3 for 90k, saving over 96k? And over time a new problem will appear, where rank1 pieces might not even be sold as there are not people chasing them, so people will be left with pieces that won’t get sold.
I have a couple of suggestions to improve this:
to craft a piece, we should be able to use a piece of the previous rank in order to reduce the cost by 50% (atleast!). That way, we can craft 15 rank 1 pieces, and then use them to craft 15 rank 2 pieces at a lower cost, and so on. It will still cost a lot, but we’ll avoid the current problem where rank1 pieces are being sold at heavy loss. This will help all professions, so it would attract less complaints.
Increasing Callous Hide drops from most mobs, and make them guarantees from Elite Beasts. This will lower prices, allowing more people to craft.
