Can someone explain the apeal of Player housing and why we need it?

The game is an MMORPG. massively multiplayer online roleplaying game.

The role playing comes from customizing and choosing a class, taking a specialization, upgrading your stats, leveling up, taking a profession etc etc.

Player housing, if done right is the ultimate roleplay feature, Blizzard stated something and when they did it they were 100% right.

They don’t want player housing to feel silly.

Simply putting a hut and the ability to place some chairs here and there won’t cut it.

They need to make the player housing something involved with the player, a long term project and something the player can keep adding and interacting with.

Take for example garrisons, garrisons SUCKED. because after an initial woah and a couple of days playing table simulator, people got bored.

A player housing is ( to me ) something that an RPG game really needs, and something that should affect, reflect and correlate with what you do.

Be it having friend npcs, rare visitors, pet place, placing guards, farming rare decorations, farming building parts, growing your own crops near, setting a profession hub, enjoying the scenery, showing friends what you’ve done and much much more.

So Tl;dr : player housing is the ultimate RPG experience and a pretty fun if done correctly aspect of the game that can serve as it’s own never ending content.

if its just a place for you to customise with items you get from running old and current content it could be a lot of fun.
It would be like a transmog but for our own private space.

It could give the rested buff but it wouldn’t need to be something you have to take part in.

Guild housing would be so cool.

There’s no reason to say it could not work as both.
Allowing others the ability to enter and customize through the housing settings could effectivley turn a player home in to a guild location.
I remember having this system on Rift, where I had my own area and the guilds area was huge, where everyone could have input. Was great fun

Because its something new instead of RNG hamsterwheel gearing. Some of us could not care less about ilvl, which is going to be irrelevant in next tier.

Pet Battles are amazing addition. Why we dont have housing? Because 90% of it would probably go online shop.

But there really is no need for any of it to be in the shop.

Ofc not but modern Blizzard makes decisions based on money. We should be able to buy house from any major city after getting its rep Exalted and fill it with thematics based on that city for example.

Why its not in the game is incompetence or they are not getting funds for that. Housing should have been in game since Cata but they just wanted to revamp and destroy the old world instead for Michael Bay shock-effect.

Ooh I like the rep idea, that’s great.

We don’t need it, we just want it. But I don’t think that’s enough for Blizzard to do anything about it.

Just to add all great explanations why we need proper housing is all the rewards and lootable objects they can put in the game for housing people to build, make with profs, kill & loot, trade and find. Items that would be worth collecting and would have absolutely no effect on gear balance.

Many people want trophies but i don’t care for them so much. I want lot of different styles furniture and decorative items, pets, garden stuff and all kind of things you need to actually make home. Dwarven cast iron stove with living fire (for cooking), velvety chairs, throws, rugs, huge bear pelts to put front of fireplace, massive wood dining table made from scratch with my own lumber, paintings, murals and so on.

I don’t see the point personally, but considering how much gold I’ve been spending on mogs, mounts and even pets recently I can’t criticise the desire to have it.

I’d add housing contents as craftable items for professions. Blacksmithing gives stoves, pans etc, tailoring gives rugs, curtains etc. Worthwhile pattern drops would be more of a thing again.

As if people never afk in some place - they are always in the world doing things, right ?

I do not find it more ‘alive’ because some avatar is afk somewhere in a hub. I guess it is same quantity vs. quality topic. Many in classic for example value that ‘inv plz’ interaction a lot whereas I find it irrelevant. Same with ‘afk in cities’. What it gives to see some ‘Legolas’ afk in his vendor mount over being in a cosy instance with friends ?

That had nothing to do with housing we talk about here. It was just activating premade decorations where you couldn’t even deside where they appear.

In real housing you loot different objects, make them, buy them and then you place them to exact spot you want to. World is not less busy because people go all over to kill different mobs to try to get 5% chance for some certain housing item (i always imagine killing belfs in tbc areas to get those velvet chairs…), they are gathering mats to make items, trading, looking to find secret items from all around the world. And then going back to your house to place that item exactly to spot you want to.

yeah aggree instanced housing would be best, one thing Wildstar did realy well, and it was realy fun to work on your house, and when finding some nice items, you could put up was fun, I always hurried back to my house to se what I got.

Player housing isn’t needed in any MMO but it would add an extra dimension to the game for those that do ‘get it’ and would enjoy using it.

Pet battles aren’t 'needed, Transmogs aren’t needed, Crafting isn’t 'needed and some people don’t ‘get it’ with those systems either, but they’re in the game.

Personally I would like to see player housing in the open world with the ability to make our own player towns and cities as was done in SWG over 15 years ago.

Hey guys, if you play WoW Classic you can see in SW a gate with a swirly portal that leads to nowhere. My bf said when he was younger he read in a gaming magazine about WoW that they going to introduce Player Housing in TBC which is where that SW swirly gate portal going to be for.

This gate:

So its been about 12 years since they advertised it, not good

They also promised us a dance studio, aerial combat and many other funny things over the years.
