Straight up im not against it i just dont get it and why we need it in WoW.
I think it’s mostly about having your own place you can personalize and gives you a sense of “this is mine and here I can chill like crazy”
That’s just my two cents though
I thought I got it when playing SWTOR as they have a rely developed system. But it just became yet another grind to get decorations or new rooms or whatever —-and at the end of the day it’s a place where u do literally nothing . So other than bragging rights pointless. Blizzard might do it then introduce some gold sink 10 mil castle or something lol. I’d prefer a guild home.
If it was done correctly it would detract nothing and serve only as an enhancement that is unique to each individual (unless it was very cut and paste like garrisons).
I see it as a similar thing to Transmogrification update but even better because other players would probably have the choice to opt in/out of seeing your bare buttcheeks.
In Lotro they have neighbourhoods where people go trick or treating together. It’s amazing.
Also, roleplayers would love it. And might be a cool place to customize and make your own, put up armors, mounts, weapons etc.
It’s something that (if done correctly) could add a whole new level of content to the game.
Professions would benefit form all of the new items that could be created and sold via the auction house and actually have some level of usage again,
New world content, such as trophy and treasure hunting could be added,
Placing different style housing in different cities, such as dwarven themed homes in ironforge, Elven themed ones in Silvermoon etc, would breath life back in to older unused cities,
the ability to share with whom you choose could also make them double as guild houses, which is also something people have been asking for.
The list could be huge if time was taken to look in to the project.
It is the feeling that something is yours.
Your own place to build up and modify to your taste. Lets take skyrim heartfire.
I took great joy in builing up my house, putting it full of thropies of my victories.
Or in minecraft where people create stuff from houses to churches, to gaint statues made of pure gold.
It is the effort into making something that is yours.
Gear is meanless these days, mounts are a dime in a dozen, garrision are orc/human buildings.
We are murder hobo.
And i for one want to stop being a hobo.
The problem with Blizzard is, that all of their game systems evolve around grinding towards some goal that will inevitably be rendered worthless in the next expansion.
Grinding towards gear or some form of power level.
They can’t seem to grasp that there is content that can be created which requires no goal other than to have personal fun and self gratification.
Back in the days of Ultima Online it was probably the biggest part of the game to obtain some property for yourself and make it your home/shop or personal profession building and it was hugely successful, as it is in other mmos today.
There was a time when WoW was setting the goals for other games to folllow. Now, well they just seem to be playing catchup unfortunately
I can only speak from what I’ve experienced.
I’ve only managed to maximize a Garrison, once.
When I was leveling, my human warrior, back during Legion launch, in my UK account.
It felt amazing, having your own place to stay and free of lagg.
In example, recently I had to move characters, I don’t play often, to their home towns like Thunder Bluff, or Silvermoon, because the logging screen goes quicker, unlike Dalaran for example, where I used to keep my DH.
It’s just a shame only Orcs and humans had their Garrison theme, during WoD, other races could had gotten as well.
Like Forsaken and Night Elves.
Cheers.
The player housing system in Star Wars Galaxies was really good, and some of the homes players had really were works of art.
For the uninitiated, you could craft buildings, furniture and other items and sell them on the AH equivelant. If you looted or bought something, you could put it in your house. Favourite set of armour and weapons? Display it in your home. Looted a painting off the wall in a dungeon? Right there above the fireplace. Options were pretty much endless.
There were subscription rewards you could claim which was good too; seem to recall the Emporers chair being one of them.
You controlled access to your home too. Not saying it was for everyone but it did add something extra to the game and was a welcome bonus from the daily grind.
You could set up shops too and ran the vendors from within. So you went to the market terminal in a city, found the item you wanted and travelled to the shop and bought it. Armourers and weaponsmiths would have racks of items on display on the walls much like real shops.
I still use my garrison, for auctions, checking the BM ah, some gold making (people still buy gliders, some potions and bags). It feels like home to me, a place of my own creation.
A proper player house would be all that + legion class hall. I wish we had a choise of where to build it and gather all sorts of trofés and some useful stuff. I would like a little lake where to put my own fish, just like in the garrison. The trofé room with archeology on display was nice too, we can have that again.
I think we have to remove the opportunity to que from the house, or all will stay in there all alone all day like in the garrison.
Couldn’t agree with you more. Nothing in WoW is long term and as you say it’s just all very formulaic and about expansion cycles; rinse and repeat. Not knocking it as it is what it is, but it could be so much more.
Currently whenever i am not doing anything i hang out in the great seal, but i would much rather have either a place of my own, that is customizable, where i can hang out, or i would rather have a guild hall where you can default to and hang with guildies.
I sometimes idle in my garrison, I quite like them actually.
Having a place you can upgrade with things you have earned in ur adventures makes you feel more tied to the things you did because you will constantly see reminders of your past. plus it would be massive for the RP community.
I think Goldshire inn would be a lot quieter… and that’s no bad thing
Different games have different approaches. I hate the land grab types, I much prefer the ones where it’s all instanced.
It’s your own customisable space. Usually you can gain stuff from the game for your home, there will be a vendor somewhere that sells some items too. They could have various achievements attached to it etc.
You can usually have people visit, some can set them as open to any visitor and show off their home. Others prefer just to allow friends in or you can just have the space to yourself.
Some like guild housing but it doesn’t interest me, it’s either just a mess or it’s just under the control of the guild master/leader.
Yea , give us Garrison 2.0 because it went well back at WoD and world was not empty at all.
Garrisons and player housing are nothing alike. Garrisons caused issues because there were too many game mechanics linked to them like mission tables, banks etc.
Player housing would be purely cosmetic and for fun. As well as that they would probably be instanced via major cities as was the original intention back in classic (the old portal behind the gate in SW) and therefore would draw ppl to the cities not away from them. Items such as furnishing etc would be purchased from Ah, also located in the major cities, so once again drawing ppl to them.
Lets take examples from FFXIV, GW2(guild housing) and ESO.
Players can have their own little space they can customise. It can be for personal or RP reasons. Guilds and/or friends can have a private place to hang out, take example to Discord groups but in a 3D environment. + All the customizations can be collected and even crafted in that space so it creates an economy in-game.
You could also spend real life money and send for instance… A tiger statue to your friend as a present, it would look perfect for his Monk-Themed house.
This also gives Role-players full access to create their own environments for RP instead of intruding levelers in their area.
Guild Housing is also pretty dope, because the whole group can have a sense of unity working towards the same goal to expand and improve that space in-game. Encouraging positive social behaviour.
Devs already said the Garrison will be THE player housing in game and they have no plans to improve it or add actual housing so far. Which is pretty disappointing. It kinda feels like Housing, but no it really isn’t compared to the potential of other MMORPGs have given to players,
